Floor fight coming at the GOP convention?

Posted: Aug 27, 2012

Romney's attempts at power grabs are ticking off everybody - tea party, state GOP leaders, and even his own delegates.  Why would he need to suppress voters in his own party?  Should be entertaining.

I know Dems do not care, but people need to rethink nominating this crook.

I mentioned Sununu because he is the committee chair. After they forced rule changes through, he took off out of there before committee members could submit dissenting minority opinions/reports. Also, can't forget Priebus who tried to say everybody was on board with it.

Why would you think dems don't care? Grass roots efforts - were the driving force

in 2008 and are the backbone of our democracy. This is an issue both parties can unite behind, unless haters and dividers want to forbid it and would rather do without unanimous support. Sorry to say this but that was a really stupid and unnecessary comment.

What and re-elect the other crook? - Nice try

I don't trust many politicians. Not saying Romney is the best person, but if you want to vote and there is only 2 choices, he's better than what we've been subjected to.

He's the kind of guy who has it all but can't get enough. - sm

One look at his tax plan should be ample proof of that. He's all about more, more, more.

More, more, more? - SK

Why do you say that? (Truly curious -- not being snarky.)

Getting nominated is not enough. - sm

He and his handlers are so insecure they will not be content until it's a unanimous roll call. Anyone who followed the primary process knows this is not the first time shenanigans have emerged and been used to suppress Ron Paul supporters and silence their delegates' voices, a right they earned while playing by the rules.

Paul won 132 delegates in 18 states, about 5% of those voting in Tampa. They (the delegates) filed a law suit in June alleging the RNC's requirement that they sign a pledge to back a certain candidate violates federal law and that the party's "Unit Rule" restricts their options and illegally limits their vote. Don't know when the US District Court ruling will be rendered. Mr Paul neither encouraged the suit, nor did he ask them to drop it. It was filed after he withdrew from the race.

IMO, when the GOP powers that be don't get their desired results, they just change to rules to suit them. This is played out on a much broader scale via Koch Bros voter fraud/voter suppression fraud.

...that "when the GOP powers that be don't get their desired results, they just change to rules to suit them."

It'll be interesting to see what the average GOP voter thinks if Romney happens to get elected, and then his administration and the Republican PTB start "changing the rules" away from the ideas they THOUGHT they were electing him for. Don't say the Republicans who tried to fight Romney's nomination didn't warn you!
Agreed. Strange times we live in, - to be ure. nm

At his rally yesterday, Ron Paul said he had hundreds of delegates. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
How many hundreds I do not know, but the RNC stripped him of all of them. The plurality he had in more than 5 states entitled him automatically to a prime time speaking spot at the convention. They did offer him the speaking spot, but told him his speech would be edited by the Romney campaign and he had to wholeheartedly endorse Romney, which he declined.
Must explain why their upchucking all over the board - trying to make this go away. nm

RP had a 'hard' total of delegates of 100, not hundreds - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
It's the hard total that counts, isn't it?

His "soft" total was 173 delegates (72 pledged and 101uncommitted).

As far as I know, he wasn't stripped of those delegates.

This is not just a power grab. It's a direct hit that - disses state's rights

to self-determination of local election laws. This must be what Mr Priebus meant by Romney not having to adhere to party platform principles. Then too, the maneuver to shut down debate on the minority dissent report (within one vote of passage, no less) by those who support the rule is classic GOP obstruct. I never thought I'd live to see the day they'd be using against their own. Something else I thought I'd never see, would be me standing up to say how proud I am of Lone Star pubs (OMG, where did I put my vapors?)!

What's more confusing is the sudden horror over concentrating power in the hands of big donors. I thought that is what Citizen's United, the GOPs crown jewel, was all about. I guess they didn't think that through either.

I've always thought Mr Priebus was a weenie, so throwing his hands up in the air and bellowing out a big "Nope" when asked if he thought there would be a floor fight is par for the course. I wonder if he has the guts to apply the rule (instead of rescinding it) by simply whisking the dissenters clean out of sight and replacing them, before they do any more damage to Romney's all-important facade...oh, excuse me, I mean image?

Whatever happens, one thing's for sure. That voter suppression thing is a real WITCH with a capital "B" What a hoot.

A big thank you to the Texas delegation. - sm

I hope not, but something tells me they will find a way to force it through. The Romney campaign and GOP establishment openly cheated throughout the primary conventions and no one did anything about it.
