Flood relief...only for the rich

Posted: May 14, 2017

DeDomenicis has lived in this house since 1982, a few hundred feet from a bay. She used to work as a restaurant server; now she’s a school crossing guard. Her husband walked a mile to his job at Bally’s Casino until he retired in January. They’ve seen floods worsen as the seas have risen, as the land beneath them has sunk, and as local infrastructure has rotted away. “It comes in the front door, the back door, and then from the bottom of the house, in through the sides,” DeDomenicis said. “You watch it come in and it meets in the middle of the house — and there’s nothing you can do.” http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2017/05/new-jerseys-flooding-crisis-hits-low-income-people-hardest.html I didn't even realize this was an issue...compounded by no relief, zero property value, Trump casino abandonment, these poor people. Reminds me of outsourcing transcription in a way...;

The article is from a biased source, but if true - why don't they move?

[ In Reply To ..]
From the article - "But the federal government has done little to protect the residents of Arizona Avenue, or the millions of other working class and poor Americans who live near bays up and down the East Coast, from a worsening flooding crisis."

The federal government has done "little" - what has the federal government actually done and what is the reasoning behind it?

I am always amazed that people who live in a flood zone stay there.

Did you read the article? - sm

no value left in house---which is what flood relief should help...but, no, instead it builds seawalls for the rich and famous...no money left for the common folk.

A biased source? The classification of unbiased sources DO NOT EVEN COVER such subjects. THAT IS BIAS.

No value in house that floods = MOVE - Yes it is a biased source

[ In Reply To ..]
And I still want to know the "little" help they got from Federal government and how the government decided only to help them a "little".

I agree. Insurancers don't want the flood insurance business. - The problem with the system is

[ In Reply To ..]
NFIP has allowed development in low lying areas by insuring in those very flood prone areas. The federal program runs in the red. And why not, whenever there are substantial catastrophic claims they just pull borrowed money out of the US Treasury. Which means that a guy paying income tax who lives on a mountain in the desert is subsidizing the “claims” on this so called “insurance” whenever another person has their beach house trashed by riding water.

It’s all a three card monte game that got started because way back in the day the Congress at the time blessed this kind of stupidity because they were told that, for example, allowing for the government to sell this do called “insurance” in places like New Orleans made sense because you only had devastating floods every “x” hundred years so in between those floods the government was making money because of the economic development. This is another example of the government going into the insurance business when they actually go in to the business of employing a bunch of idiots to administer an idiotic program doing idiotic things for idiots that want to live under water.

My flood insurance is purchased from a private corp, not the - govt. If I purchase private insurance,

[ In Reply To ..]
I should be subject to their zoning determination, insurance premiums and settlement amounts, not the federal government’s. And if the fed doesn’t like FEMA paying out flood claims to the un-insured they can modify the settlement amounts by the degree a property is "hazard built" into a flood plain rather than jacking up everyone’s rates to subsidize the insurance companies who aren’t even covering the uninsured.

Report: FEMA to withhold disaster funds from - states that do not believe in climate change.

[ In Reply To ..]
This was in 2015. It is absolutely outside the scope of FEMA’s legislative authority.

What's next? Funds to protect Bigfoot as an endangered species? California did that!

"Poor" beach front property owners? LOL! - NM

Obviously your only experience is with the wealthy - Open your blinders...

[ In Reply To ..]
Just because you have not experienced it does not mean it does not exist.

The "rich" and middle class in NJ pay the majority of - property taxes, which fund:

[ In Reply To ..]
Minority district schools (because they don't have the property tax base to support all that they want)

Pensions, salaries, and benefits for NJ State workers

And a myriad of other programs

Furthermore, why are the "poor" more "deserving" of this or that government program? I can do a comparison of what income bracket kicks into the Federal treasury, and what income bracket or group takes out in freebies and benefits.

Guess what?

The PC crowd and the Democrats would not like to hear these results and facts - not one bit.

Unlike many other parts of the country, the Jersey - short areas are FLAT.

[ In Reply To ..]
When we get coastal flooding, the water rises. Big Deal. Its not like other areas of the country where floods turn into torrent whitewater rivers causing physical destruction. In our area, stuff gets wet if you don’t do things to prevent it.

Most houses that are in flood prone areas are piling or CMU walls. Those that aren’t should be. Every year I see dozens of houses being raised. Its a simple solution to a simple problem.

Guess, they should just stay in the - house and let it be raized

Their lives and economic futures aren't worth a thing are they? Stupid poor people...just not smart enough to have been further up that economic pole.

Do you people know what you sound like? Do you know what you are?

Their lives will be better if they move. - For the most part, poor people are uneducated

[ In Reply To ..]
Their lives and their economic futures are in their hands. Maybe they aren't smart enough to have been further up the economic pole.

Deal with that.
So those smart rich people shouldget - Get relief to save their millions

And the govt transfers more money to the insurance industry or capitalist ventures. You guys are really vested in wannabe rich aren't cha?

With damage stretching from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, one million people were left homeless, with 385 dead and property losses reaching $500 million ($8.7 billion in 2015 dollars). Federal and state resources were strained to aid recovery, as the disaster occurred during the depths of the Great Depression and a few years after the Dust Bowl.

Has Anyone Tried An OTC Bite Guard For TMJ Relief? Jan 20, 2012
I have TMJ that flares up and has been hurting me for the last couple of days.  My dentist has said I need a bite guard for when I sleep and when I'm working because I clench my jaw and grind my teeth at night.  However, to get one made through her will cost me $300 because my insurance will not cover it!  I've looked at the OTC ones that you can sort of "do it yourself" and fit it to your teeth.  My dentist has said I should absolutely NOT use one of the OTC ones b ...

Haitian Money For Earthquake Relief Was Funneled Through Friends Of The ClintonsAug 01, 2016
Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Hillary’s 2016 presidential campaign. By all accounts, the money and what it was meant to do never really reached the Haitian people. While the Clinton Foundation only puts 10% of its donations towards charity, the IHRC was a real racket for Clinton pals, 1% went towards Haitian groups and agencies on the ground. All that is transparent is that the money didn’t go to Haiti, beyond that the trail goes cold. The money for earthquake relief ...
