The University of Chicago just put students on notice that they can forget about "safe spaces", speakers being turned away because students don't like what they have to say, etc. This is the announcement: “Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called 'trigger warnings,' we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual 'safe spaces' where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own." Stanford has banned hard liquor from undergraduate parties. Are these signs that academia is finally waking up to its true mission?;

The U of C is an odd place - its faculty has its share of the loony left, and it did hire BO as a lecturer (not a professor, by the way), but it does have its moments.
In the 1960 when activists were taking over campus buildings and college administrators were falling over themselves appeasing them, a bunch of these clowns occupied a building on the U of Chicago campus. As I recall, the school essentially moved any needed business out of there and ignored them - after a couple of days, protesters started to drift away, news coverage evaporated, and within two weeks the sit-in ended as the last moron left, with the whole episode as a complete fiasco. I don’t recall for sure if students involved were expelled or disciplined, but I seem to think at least some were (but that may be wishful thinking). But the response at the U of C was almost unique in the country - behavior that led to the snowflake repositories we have to deal with today.
They tried this in California. Sam Hayakawa at the time told his student protestors to pound sand.
