Ever since I saw a news article on political correctness and the NEW words to add

Posted: Sep 1, 2012

I did a little checking and came across a very interesting article. Please read it, think about it, and then opine about it.

The article is called: "When Political Correctness Collides with Political Correctness" and the first paragraphs are as follows:

What happens when one politically correct notion collides with an opposite politically correct notion?  Disastrous chaos if you’re the pessimistic type, but hilarious comedy if you’re an irony fan.

Take the true story (dailymail.co.uk) of British feminist journalist Cinnamon Heathcote-Drury.

She was standing in line behind a Muslim couple at the supermarket check-out, incensed at the indifferent attitude of the Muslim husband as his hajib covered wife struggled to load their many groceries on the conveyor belt.

GOP mouthpiece Karl Rove thinks it's PC to joke about - murdering Todd Akin.

[ In Reply To ..]
Does that make the entire party criminal accomplices to his "hot mic" moment? His apology went something like this: OMG, I would have NEVER said that if I'd known reporters were around!

Karl Rove is not even spoken about in this article, is he? - backwards typist

Or did I speed read and miss it?
Sorry. I didn't realize bifocals weren't allowed to correct - left-sided near-vision optics?

I believe the article's general topic of discussion is political correctness.

I have almost zero interest in the GOP’s war on political correctness. I think it’s just another rhetorical detour they take down dialog dead ends, designed to play the clock out until the election, while navigating the mine fields of self-imposed party policy deficits they are determined to shroud in secrecy until November. Of course, PC is a two-way street, so I thought I’d take a peek at some of the scenery on the other side of the highway.

This past June, state Rep Lisa Brown D-MI was silenced by her GOP colleagues for using the word “vagina,” as was Rep Barb Bynum for her vascectomy “outburst” during debates over anti-abortion bills. Their punishment for “violating decorum?” MI GOP Speaker’s refusal to call on them in future debates (link 1), a thoroughly politically INCORRECT abuse of authority, considering the reps were elected to office via democratic process. GOP duplicity is no more prominent than the their recently adopted party platform’s across-the-board abortion criminalization that does not allow for exceptions for “legitimate rape” victims, while simultaneously calling for Todd Akin’s ouster from the party. In a related observation, Christian nonprofit American Vision accused the GOP of “political gang rape” in their handling of Tood Akin. Obviously, political correctness is a confusing notion for the GOP to digest.

Another example is knee-jerk support of privatizing Social Security, despite the glaring evidence of what a disaster that would be. Retirees would have had the bulk of their nest eggs wiped out in October 2008, had that sort of plan been en force. SS was all they had left after seniors by the millions lost everything in private accounts during the recession, and that was BEFORE the market bottomed out in 2009.

The Texas state legislature GOP platform opposes teaching “critical thinking skills,” which they view as a threat to “fixed belief systems” (LOL) and parental authority. Case in point: Indoctrination of challenges to the “theories” of evolution and climate change, by elevation of the status of religious creationism (AKA: “intelligent” design) to equal footing, despite its basic tenet of “blind faith” and lack of proof thereof, which they so vociferously decry when ignoring centuries’ worth of scientific inquiry.

How about Virginia GOP constitutional purists calling for armed revolt in November if the vote fails them and Obama is re-elected (link 2)? How politically correct is that?

Word salad "correctness" is rife when recalling the ridiculous machinations we witnessed when the GOP did its best to avoid calling torture “torture.”

One word: Birthers.

I think that's enough time spent on a patently petty nonissue. PC is part of the culture. It's not going anywhere, so may as well learn to deal with it.

And many people seem to feel that their own way is the only right way.

In the cited grocery store example, rather than taking it upon myself to help the woman, I would have asked her if she wanted help. And I certainly wouldn't have confronted the husband. No harm, no foul.

In the case of pigs on airplanes (Seriously? Pigs on airplanes? I get such boring flights! Does that qualify for "when pigs fly?" LOL), unless someone tries to force the Muslim to EAT the pig, he/she should just accept the act that others have different values.

Dander allergies? Change seats. For that matter, airplanes aren't vacuumed between every flight..... Whose to say there wasn't a Pekinese butt in your seat before you boarded the plane?

My theory, lead by example but don't impose my will on others. If someone likes the way I handled a situation, perhaps they'll emulate it the next time they find themselves in a similar situation. I know I've benefited greatly from watching someone I admire and trying to gain those qualities within myself.

One caveat to that would be if I were to find myself in a situation where I thought someone was being abused or in danger (i.e., a mother screaming at a child in the grocery store). I hope I would handle the situation adequately, but I would feel the need to step in... IMHO, we must defend those who cannot defend themselves, PC be damned.

Oh, come on. "Incensed" as "habib-covered wife" "struggled" to unload - groceries at checkout? Must have been quite

some scene when this "Cinnamon" person noisily pushed in to demonstrate her outrage by "helping" the poor thing. Then found herself a poor abused thing when the husband and wife had her arrested.

You know, if some nut case pushed in to unload my cart for me, I'd be trying to keep her calm and everything smooth. If she was insulting my husband, I'd have the store manager called to protect us from her by tossing her out, as would assuredly be done.

And if her motive in creating this public scene was actually hostility against my religion, you can be sure I'd be making a very emphatic statement of my own. And it most assuredly wouldn't be "Thank you."

I don't think it was hostility against the religion, - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
I get the sense that she didn't understand the religion (her attitude didn't help), but I also think the couple she tried to help went too far when they had her arrested.

There was a time when things used to be settled politely between people, not what is happening today. It would really be nice if that attitude would take precedence in our society again, but alas, there's too many hotheads for it to ever happen, which is sad.

Well put.... - SK1

this story, which is just being used in this article to make a point that has nothing to do with objectively reporting the story. According to it, even, she WAS arrested for a hate crime.

Hate laws are written and enforced in England to combat the endemic hostility that's developed toward the large number of people who've immigrated from other parts of the British Empire. For the same reason, people there have many more opportunities to develop understanding, including extensive government efforts to keep hatred ("misunderstanding" if you will) from blowing up into mobs setting houses and mosques on fire and attacking people on the street.

Here, Hindus and Muslims account for far fewer of us, just over 1% according to a Pew study, and are much more assimilated. I've had a number of people here in the South tell me innocently in casual conversation that they've never met a non-Christian, a liberal, a Jew (Both liberal and nonbeliever here, but I didn't enlighten them), so you can imagine that, unlike little England, chances for intercultural understanding are very lacking in large parts of our country.

And on a much larger scale here in the US...sm - JTBB

we have religious beliefs that are being forced into our government and subsequently into our daily lives. And yet, if athiests put up signs, advertise, etc its considered taboo. Political correctness indeed.

Not the way I see it.... - SK1

[ In Reply To ..]
Atheists have the same rights and freedom of speech that any other group does. From what I've seen, they don't hesitate to use it when they feel their rights are being infringed upon.

Google "atheist signs," "atheist billboards" and "atheist lawsuits."

If you outlaw, for example, abortion...sm - JTBB

[ In Reply To ..]
what is that based on? It's based on the religious right's belief that human life begins at conception. So, when you have an athiest (or anyone else for that matter) who does not have that same belief and does not believe life begins at conception, who for whatever reason needs an abortion, she is FORCED by law to carry that child to term based on the religious beliefs of others. This is what the republican platform is for btw.

And yeah, there are athiest signs, billboards etc out there. There is also a constant stream of religious protestors following them. When that same type of protest is made by athiests, for example at a manger scene or a list of the commandments at a courthouse (a place of law..remember that old saying about separation of church and state?) the first thing that happens is Fox News tells all its viewers that the evil doers are at again. Subsequently it turns into a thing where atheists are painted as folks with no morals etc and how they should just let these folks do what they want.

This is blatent hypocrisy of "religious freedom."
Yes and no... - SK1
[ In Reply To ..]
While I agree that the predominance of the anti-abortion sentiment comes from religious beliefs, it's not the only basis for the opinion.

I watch Fox News and while I've seen them do stories on atheist protests, I can't say I've ever thought they portrayed them as "evil doers."

While I would be a screaming hotfoot if a new courthouse erected the 10 commandments on its front yard, it breaks my heart when ANY group demands the removal of a 100-year-old religious symbol from a public place, simply because pieces like that are an integral piece of a place's history.
LOL....check out Bill O'Reilly sometime...sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
when something like that comes up. I think one of the problems is perception. If you're a christian (and this is how I see it) you don't really see the negativity when exuded by your own side. This happens with everything and from every side. A good example of that would be women who have to wear veils. Many do it because that's what they were taught, its part of their religion, its part of their history, and they just don't see anything wrong with it. Me...I see it as oppression.

Historical landmarks that just happen to have a religious undertone is one thing. Its part of history (whether or not agreed with) and should remain. However, a brand new plaque of the 10 commandments at a courthouse is another thing completely.

Society is changing. There are now just as many nonbelievers as there are believers (if not more). While I think its prudent to preserve what history we have, our culture and our surroundings should reflect those changes, not step backwards into the past.
Well, there ya have it.... - SK1

I don't consider Bill O'Reilly a news show. LOL
It doesn't matter if you personally....sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
don't consider his show as news (I agree with that btw). However, many people do, just like they consider commentators from both sides factual. There really aren't that many people who actually sit down and look up political facts like folks on this board, and what they go by is what they see on the TV, whatever that channel may be.

I will say one thing in favor of Fox and MSNBC. They fact check each other (even if it is out of spite, and yeah that too can be slanted..lol). However, it does encourage viewers to research on their own.

routinely tries to ruin it for the masses. If they are anywhere near as tolerable of others as they claim, there would be some semblance of understanding coming from the atheist. You will never see that happend. We gte it - they don't believe in God. Strangest part is, the atheists/heathens are the meanest, unhappy, weirdest people I've ever encountered.
My goodness... - SK1

You do paint with a broad brush! I am what you would probably consider a heathen, but I'm certainly not mean or unhappy. See? Laughing  Weird, maybe.

I hope that people speak of you more kindly.  (Karma, baby, karma!)

OP clearly stated atheists they had "encountered" - ::Since you're a complete stranger
[ In Reply To ..]
No broad brush there at all. We had ONE atheist try to remove a manger scene at a church because they did not want to look at. Well then, don't look. No one dragged that atheist to the church to view or participate. That type of behavior is mean and spiteful and we see it all the time. They are not "forced" into any activity, but want 85% of the public to not engage in a faith activity to benefit their viewpoint. I believe in God, not "karma". To each his own. If you are happy and content, more power to ya, and I wish you all the best. :)

"We get it - they don't believe in God. Strangest part is, the atheists/heathens are the meanest, unhappy, weirdest people I've ever encountered."

Perhaps splitting hairs, but.... - SK1
[ In Reply To ..]
How does the OP know that she/he has never met me? Or any other perfectly nice, rational atheists/"heathens" for that matter? Most people don't extend their hand and say, "hello, my name is Susie and I'm an atheist."

To reiterate an analogy I've used before, saying that the one atheist who sues over the removal of the manger represents all atheists is like saying that Fred Phelps represents all Christians.
Another atheist here. Removing a manger from a CHURCH? As a - member of a secret 800-year-old
[ In Reply To ..]
international atheist cabal organized to remove all mangers from the earth, I can tell you (in secret, shhh) that during this era we plot only remove them from government property. 2057 is the year we will remove them from churches everywhere. Nothing to do with meanness, though. We just don't like mangers.
