In this case, this man left his job to pursue political organization.
If he receives money to help with his expenses, I suppose you would say he is paid. (He has used a good part of his own money, but I am certain that is running thin.) He is doing the work of many who are unable to participate due to their own obligations to family and some who simply could not live this way.
I, for one, appreciate the work he does, am happy to contribute and do not deny anyone offering him subsidy in return for his tireless and noble effort.
