in Libya? The Pentagon confirmed we have ground troops there. I guess this is just another free pass for Obama, huh? Where is the screaming and yelling about this being a war for oil because that is exactly what this is. Where is the screaming and yelling about how he lied and said we wouldn't have ground troops even though that is what is happening now. Where is the screaming and yelling about our president waging war on a country without the approval of congress. There was no immediate threat to the US from Libya and yet our president ordered air strikes. Why is this okay? Ya'll didn't by the humanitarian excuse when Bush invaded Iraq and took out Hussein. You declared that Bush's war for oil. Is this another double standard? It's okay for Obama to attack a country, put troops on the ground after he said he wouldn't merely for an oil rich country without the approval from congress when Libya NEVER attacked us, but it wasn't okay for Bush to do the same thing WITH congress' approval? I just don't get it.

Before debunking the contents of this post, let's dispose of Flocks idiotic boots on the ground false reporting. Four service members are assisting the State Department in the NONCOMBATIVE rebuilding the AMERICAN embassy in Tripoli which was damaged in the fighting. Embassies are considered to be sovereign entities under international law. The American embassy is not part of Libya. It is an extension of its home country, not part of its host country. Got it? Big whoop. End of story.

US involvement in Libya did not violate the War Powers Act, which allows for a 60-day time period plus one 30-day extension before the president is required to seek a formal declaration of war from Congress. In the case of Libya, on March 18 Obama met to consult with 9 democrats and 9 republicans regarding the US plan for involvement in Libya as part of a coalition. Out of those 18, only one (Durbin) voiced clear-cut opposition by suggesting he seek authorization from Congress. On March 19 the US joined NATO forces in air strikes to enforce the UN's newly imposed no-fly zone. The president DID NOT ORDER THEM, he lent US support to an international coalition.

On March 21, Obama sent a letter of formal notification to Speaker Boehner and Senator Inoujye, President Pro Tempore in the Senate, describing the limited scope of the US mission in concert with international forces, its objectives and stating no ground troops were being deployed. He addressed the nation on March 29. On March 31 command of the no-fly zone was handed over to NATO while coalition forces (consisting of 15 EU and 3 Arab nations) retained command of ground targeting operations.

Just prior to the 90-day deadline, the White House issued the following statement regarding Libya and the WPA requirements. “US operations do not involve sustained fighting or active exchanges of fire with hostile forces, nor do they involve the presence of US ground troops, US casualties or a serious threat thereof, or any significant chance of escalation into a conflict characterized by those factors...” as specifically defined in the WPA. He went on to argue that the transfer of direct command of the attack on Libya from the United States to NATO had allowed American military forces to step back into a support role.

After a number of puerile symbolic scolding gestures and funding threats, on June 24, the House rejected a resolution (similar to the one the Senate had recently passed expressing support for the U.S. mission) by a vote 123 to 295. They DID NOT cut funding for the military operation in Libya or restrict the US role there, a measure which failed 238 to 180 despite the GOP/TPs best efforts. The House disapproval of the overall mission was intended to embarrass Obama, but they were unwilling to go so far as to risk ending up on the "wrong side of history" by not remaining involved the effort to unseat a tyrannical dictator in the middle of the domino effects of Arab Spring being played out across the region. They have been silent on the issue ever since.

The war for oil thingy hardly holds water, since the mission is supportive of GRASS ROOTS democratic rebellions to overthrow regimes which over the years had maintained oil-friendly relations with the west, as has been the case across the region with other uprisings. Quadafi's ouster is inevitable. Lending support to forces which will eventually replace him is good foreign policy aimed at PRESERVING longstanding US interests in the future. That those interests are centered around access to oil is HARDLY anything new, and certainly not of Obama's making. Obviously, had he not engaged in the process, his detractors would have most assuredly found something else to gripe about, along the lines of failing to protect those same interests.

W's HUMANITARIAN excuse? What a joke. Does the WMD lie ring any bells? Keep in mind, had he not L-I-E-D, it is highly unlikely he could have gotten Congressional consent, let alone justify the assembly of a coalition. How about taking up the cause where his daddy left off and finishing the job for the sake of family honor, and hiding behind the War on Terror excuse, despite the fact that most of the highjackers came from Saudi and Al-Qaeda did not have a presence in Iraq until AFTER W's brilliant "humanitarian" Shock and Awe guise? BTW, Iraq DID NOT ATTACK US either, remember?

Logic tells us no double standards could possibly be applied to these two apples and oranges circumstances. Let's spell this out to be clear. Invasion of a foreign country for no good reason whatsoever versus support for an ongoing democratic revolution against a tyrannical dictator, in line with multiple regional uprisings and upheavals of considerably far-reaching future significance. You do understand the difference, don't you?

I was on Craigslist today to look for my sister a kitty for christmas because hers just died and she hasn't been able to get another one. People were trying to charge people like $500 to get rid of their dog! I thought usually when you give a pet away that you do just that... give it away... for free.
