Whatever happened to the Do Not Call registry

Did they do away with it? I have been on the list for a few years and within the past few months have been getting bombarded with collection agency calls. I have no debts or outstanding debts. All my bills have been paid in full, so I know it's not about me. It's automated services calling. Sometimes they call, I pick up and hang up and then within 1 minute I get another call and this time it will say private name/number. I've tried picking up to tell them to stop calling, but it's dead on the other end. Another agency kept calling and leaving a message for my last name, but kept giving a different first name each time they called.

I thought the Do Not Call was supposed to stop this. Did they repeal it? I remember a few months back (or maybe a year or so ago), there was a big uproar because the people abusing the system wanted to be able to call but I don't remember the outcome of that. Do debt collectors not fall under the DNC thing? Just wondering.

debt collectors fall under the dnc list guidelines. However, they are not allowed to call after 9 p.m., at least in our state. I used to work for a collections agency on the client side, and a lot of the rules depend on the state you live in. Also, in order to get your phone number (hopefully) removed from their database, you need to calmly talk to the collector and explain that you do not know the person they are looking for is, do not have the debt, the fact that you have had this number forever, etc. You may have to put it in writing, but the main thing is to remain calm yet firm. Many people lie about this, so the collectors may try to give you a hard time about removing your number. Just stay persistent. Hopefully this advice will work for you!

A couple of weeks ago, someone apparently used my e-mail address (and whatever else) to sign up for auto insurance quotes, creditmatch.com, and several other seemingly unrelated online services. I was on Craigslist today to look for my sister a kitty for christmas because hers just died and she hasn't been able to get another one. People were trying to charge people like $500 to get rid of their dog! I thought usually when you give a pet away that you do just that... give it away... for free.
