what happened to chivalry

I just went to a group interview where there were about 30 of us. We all waited in the lobby. There were about 25 men and 5 women. Three of the women were standing. NONE, and I mean NONE of the men offered their seats to us, nor did they allow us to enter through the doors first.

Is this what we've come to? Are parents not teaching this stuff? I don't think I'm weaker by any means, but is it not gentlemanlike to do this anymore?

I don't think it's chivalry as much as social propriety, dignity, self respect, et cetera. A lot has been lost over generations and women have fought long and hard for equality only to take two steps forward and three back. It's shameful to see how much society is degrading with each passing year, and for oldies like myself, it's just sad.

Perhaps it was only the situation you were in, all those people there, afterall were there competing for a job. It is a cutthroat economy and perhaps everyone was making a personal statement... ??

In a situation like that, I would have gladly given up my seat to a man, or another woman, just to set the wheels in motion and remind people that we should be "nice", at the very least, to each other.

You were in a work-oriented situation. In the work place, women strive to be seen as equals. I wouldn't think a thing of not being ushered in first or given a seat to sit while the men stand.

Now, if I am going out on a date, that's different - it is a personal respect shown to me.

You are competing for jobs against the men -- you better be able to handle it like the men. No advantages or disadvantages. No free rides.

I rarely open a door for myself and have had several men in the neighborhood offer to do anything that I need done (since my husband is deployed) in the man department. I think that sometimes when we are trying to be equal to men, we forget that men and women are different. Unfortunately, we can't have it both ways. We can't expect to tell men that they are no different, no stronger, no more masculine, et cetera, and then expect to be treated like princesses. I, for one, would rather act like a woman and be treated like one, but I think that when it comes to women, the poor men no longer know how to act. I have seen other women get offended because my husband opened a door for them and even had one tell him that she was perfectly capable of doing it herself--rather than the appropriate thank you. This is something that women have done to themselves.

My son (9 yo) is being taught by his father to open/hold doors,etc. Yesterday he went out to the bus stop with an umbrella to meet his sister and walk her in so she didn't get wet! so nice. It is up to us to help our boys learn these things!

at church today. An older boy (6) touched him in an inappropriate manner (licked his bottom), after locking the door to the bathroom, so that noone could see. My son came and told me immediately and we talked about touching that is okay and not okay (thankfully, we have already had this talk, which is why he came to his father and me) and not to let someone ever do that again, as well as making clear that he can tell us anything and that he should never do this to anyone else, either ...

Maybe he really meant more robots will have jobs. Otherwise, most of the companies that use people for labor are taking their jobs to India and China, which by the way includes Trump and Ivanka. I was on Craigslist today to look for my sister a kitty for christmas because hers just died and she hasn't been able to get another one. People were trying to charge people like $500 to get rid of their dog! I thought usually when you give a pet away that you do just that... give it away... for free.
