This is Nuts

Posted: Aug 31, 2014

Okay, so this is nuts. I am looking for a non-MT work-at-home job. I went on a couple of websites, and many of the jobs require that I speak English AND Spanish. REQUIRED. Okay, so I have to learn their language, but they don't have to learn mine? When my grandpa came to this country back when the hard-working immigrants were making this country, nobody catered to his language of Italian. If he didn't learn to speak English, he couldn't survive here. More, unless he took a course in English and English grammar and passed a test, he wasn't allowed to work in the country. Twisted. Don't get on me here. Yes,immigrants made this great country, but the ones coming here now have nothing to do with bettering themselves or contributing to our country.;

I know where you are coming from but I do not agree - with the sweeping generalization

[ In Reply To ..]
I live in the Southwest where I as a Caucasian am a minority, technically speaking.

Having worked in the hotel industry for 15 years, I can tell you that the people that I worked with who were Mexican immigrants were MUCH better workers than the ones who were multi-generational Hispanics. They were harder workers and much more pleasant to be around than some of the lazy kids, who were US citizens of several generations, who just felt they were owed something.

I absolutely feel where you are coming from, but just thought I would present a different viewpoint.

I Understand - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand. I have observed that myself. They are willing to get out in the fields and do the hard, sweaty work that most U.S. "kids" these days don't want to do.

BUT, we still need to get control over this, it will suck our country dry to hand out freebies left and right to immigrants.

We also shouldn't discriminate against the Europeans and others who have to jump through hoops of paper work to come here and stay here. And they are sent home if all their I's aren't dotted and T's aren't crossed. THAT is discrimination, but nobody seems to think about that.

Is it possible - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
that the clients are legal, yet not comfortable in English as a communicating language? Once again, your employer may wish to serve their clientele in the language most easily spoken and understood. Where did this jump to "freebies" to this population that speaks Spanish. Is this job specifically dealing with social services in areas that have a lot of illegals?

My viewpoint - Waiting for the dislikes

[ In Reply To ..]
I live in an area that is heavily agricultural and has a very large Hispanic population. Some people follow the harvest, but some also choose to stay, attend school, learn English and find permanent employment. Many of them do the work that no one else will do, think about that the next time you go grocery shopping or visit your local farmer's market. I also see the INS vans roll through town on a regular basis rounding up illegal immigrants for deportation. If they get caught, they get sent back. I am sure there are many who take advantage of our system and accept freebies, but there are also a number of US natives who have learned how to navigate our welfare system. I work with quite a few second generation Hispanics. They are bilingual in English and Spanish, and they are the ones getting hired for customer service jobs because they communicate in both languages. In order to attend school in this country, children need to learn English. They graduate from high school, attend college and get jobs just like everyone else. I also know a family of Chinese immigrants who are bilingual and the hardest working people you will ever meet. Within their family circle, they speak their native language. I am Caucasian; my paternal grandparents were Irish immigrants and my maternal grandparents were Russian immigrants. Of course, they had to adapt to our culture, but a lot was lost in the process. I learned Spanish in school but unfortunately not well enough to use it in the workplace, I wish I had. Hispanic people do speak their native language, because that is what they are familiar with, but it does not mean that they are not trying to learn. I wasn't aware that there was any discrimination going on against Europeans these days. Anyone who chooses to become a US citizen pretty much follows the same process. If you study American history, you will learn that Texas and California were Mexican territory at one point but the Americans stole it from them and claimed it for their own. Hispanic priests settled in several parts of California and established Catholic missions, we actually have a rich Hispanic heritage and much of it is positive. I didn't mean to lecture, but I have difficulty when people generalize in this manner. It only sounds ignorant and racist.

Here's a funny -- - Valerie

[ In Reply To ..]
Back when the Hispanic kids were stomping around LA protesting whatever, one kid was interviewed and told the interviewer that "Mexicans were really important in agriculture, because they like mowed the lawns and stuff." Had nobody ever told the kid about the actual labor of bending to plant and harvest produce? Unbelievable.
What? How does that relate to job qualifications required by a - business?
[ In Reply To ..]
Where does this quote originate. Do you have a link or did you make it up?

This is true. I myself hire Hispanic rather - than others

[ In Reply To ..]
Over the years have had black, white and Hispanic workers and I guarantee this, no one has worked as fast, efficiently and hard as Hispanics. They are not afraid to work. I have just let a black housekeeper go in favor of hiring Hispanic because I know I will have a clean house at the end of the day.

I agree with you 100%. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I posted down below about illegals sneaking into our country, but I am not against legal immigrants whatsoever. I love the Hispanic people, their culture, their food, everything about them. The ones I know are good, honest, hard-working people, but they are also here legally. They feel the same way I do about the illegals crossing into the US and also feel that it makes them look bad. I fear this whole mess will cause race relations between Hispanics and everyone else to go down the tubes, something this country absolutely does not need on top of everything else.

I find it odd that you tier workers by color. - nm

I would not care if I worked 20 or 60 hours a week, still would hire housekeeper. I spent the day yesterday with entertaining a friend and her kids and got the house cleaned, clothes washed and it cost a measly $65.00. I had a fun day and still got the work done that I wanted done. Sweet!

But the only thing that stops me is that I would HAVE to clean everything myself before letting anyone in! Isn't that just silly?! My house isn't NASTY, but I am such a spaz that I could never just let anyone in and see my house "as is."

I don't know what I'm afraid of...maybe thoughts of a white glove coming out and touching all the surfaces or something?

I do have a toddler, and a wood stove, so random things can be either sticky or covered in a fine dust at any given time. I deal with them when I FIND THEM, but I certainly don't go looking for them on a daily basis. "I ain't got time for that."

but mine is mostly say receipts I want to save that perhaps are on the counters and things to be put up that maybe they would not know where they go. I tell a newcomer if clothing on the floor, needs washing, if on the bed needs hanging up (usually have some washing in the bathroom on the floor to be washed, not in every room in the house, BTW). My house is not hard to clean, totally vacuum throughout, no mopping as tiled floors and husband has his own electrically run thingy he uses to clean the floors better, no dishwashing as I have dishwasher but I am a stickler for my countertops in the kitchen and baths. I absolutely want them cleaned and smooth feeling from back to front and that is a must do for me personally.

I did not take my retirement money until full retirement age. I only work part time now but because I still enjoying getting in a few hours a week and making some money. I have some money in the bank, IRA and some other, not a lot but some. I could make it on my retirement funds and social security if need be. Good for you, by the way.

This thread has the running theme of immigrant hatred, yet a major problem is people paying C*A*S*H and not checking the I-9 which documents legal status.

People who do this should go to jail. They are guiltier than the immigrants who are being taken advantage of.

When I had horses, I bought hay from a "hay guy." I also had a farrier who trimmed their feet. I paid all of them in cash. I never asked for any identification or forms, but I did get receipts for goods and services.

I've also gone to someone's house to have my hair cut and paid them in cash as well.

Right now, we have some dudes fixing the roof of our house. They are also paid in cash and are also giving us receipts.

I have never asked any of these people for identification or tax forms or anything like that. Why would I treat someone coming in to clean my house any different? The most I would do is check for references and do a brief internet search for maleficence. And clean wicked hard first. ;)

Filing taxes is their problem. Paying for their services and getting a receipt for that payment is mine.
Nope. Services over $600 you are required to report - Its the law.

File Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income, for each person to whom you have paid during the year:

•At least $10 in royalties (see the instructions for box 2) or broker payments in lieu of dividends or tax-exempt interest (see the instructions for box 8);

•At least $600 in rents, services (including parts and materials), prizes and awards, other income payments, medical and health care payments, crop insurance proceeds, cash payments for fish (or other aquatic life) you purchase from anyone engaged in the trade or business of catching fish, or, generally, the cash paid from a notional principal contract to an individual, partnership, or estate;

If you are hiring an independent
contractor to provide service, the above would apply.

If you are indeed an employee, you would know that you now have to prove legal status by fllling out am I-9. The MTSOs require them.

If you do not do either, you are part of the problem. Encouraging illegal immigration by paying cash, or in the case of an employer, not getting I-9s on employees.

Why are your harping on just illegal immigration - requiring cash to work
[ In Reply To ..]
You sound like a case of sour grapes. Apparently you don't have the money to hire outside help or you WOULD KNOW regardless whether here legally or not, most outside workers would rather have cash than get personal checks and certainly most do not take debit or credit. Why not take your energy from being spiteful about people trying to make a better life for their families and do something worthwhile like fostering a child from another country fleeing because of their life being in danger?
Been an employee, now an IC, worked for - many years and I never heard

of I-9. Never filled one out, never had anyone fill one out, just have no idea. I have hired many people and don't care if they came from Siberia or just down the street, just interested in can they do a job.
ignorance of the law is no excuse - you can go to jail for noncompliance with tax code

I have had black, white, Hispanic help and never have asked anyone for a I-9 document. As far as this being about hatred, such a strong word and I surely do not hate anyone. I pay the same for outside help so taking advantage of immigrants, don't know where that comes from.
My housekeeper was born in Oklahoma, as - L&L
[ In Reply To ..]
was the previous one I hired. Lots of people, myself included, have worked for cash. Has nothing to do with immigration.

P.S. I make 43K/year, will retire on much the same, invested my late husband's 60K of life insurance in gold when it was 220/oz, and took nothing from my first husband but as much of his retirement I could get. I'll be paying a housekeeper at least 20/hr in cash as long as I live.

Depends on the job - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand the whole English is the language of the U.S.

But, you are looking for a job. The employer has a need for Spanish/English speakers. I suppose it would depend on the type of job. If it is a conversation you will be having of high sensitivity and importance, for instance, their medical history or a financial agreement, speaking in the language best understood by the customer/client might be to everyone's benefit. For that matter, I suppose selling lingerie in the customer's native language would be better too! Your customer/client is at whatever language level they are, this is not going to change for your employer fast enough to sell/provide their service. They need an employee that will be able to communicate their product now, not after everyone obtains the appropriate training, i.e. speaks English.

I have a child who entered 8th grade a week ago. He is taking Spanish. Fact: There is a large part of this country that speaks Spanish/feels comfortable with Spanish as a first language, and there are many employers that will hire/promote you up the ranks if you are fluent in that second language. As an employee, you might even be considered if you are not as good a candidate if you are able to speak a second language. This Spanish-speaking population has needs and economic interests. Should we refuse to service this population until it learns English?

I would say your potential employer has chosen to serve them in Spanish if that is what they choose.

I also feel that the immigration of yester-year--grandparents was deeply wrapped in patriotism as a result of the World War immigration. Learning English proved allegiance, a direct choosing sides. There are no sides for Mexican immigrants to choose. I don't think we worry too much about their true allegiance to Mexico or the U.S.

P.S. I am studying Spanish with him, covertly, of course, you can't do anything with an 8th grade boy!

Am going to thoroughly disagree with you, - do you personally know new ones coming here

[ In Reply To ..]
or are you just generalizing? I know several that are here. The people are here trying to have better lives for their families. They want to work, they want to be able to live decent lives and yes they want to contribute by paying taxes. I know people who are here on visas, I know people who are here illegally and I also know children who were born in the US, thus citizens and their parents are not. One lady has been here 15 years, her English is broken but her children speak bilingual and do it beautifully. Those are the people who will be in much demand in years to come because of their ability to speak not just 1 lanuage. In fact, her young boy who is in the 2nd grade actually speak some Italian. Another lady has been here only 8 years and her English is as good as ours is. She told me she taught herself by watching TV programs with subtitles, saw the Spanish and learned English by reading the subtitles. The lady here only 8 years has 3 children born outside the US and 1 born here. The guy with the visa is from Nigeria. He just recently came back from there and was telling me how terrible the country was. The goverment even worse with corruption. I asked him about could you demostrate against the country like here in the US and he said yes, but they would kill you for doing so. He knows guys who have college degrees and they were begging for food to live much less having a job. I doubt you know anyone personally here as immigrants and have no idea about many here trying to better themselves and contributing also.

I am just saying - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I am just saying that there should be some requirements. Those who are "jumping the border" in the droves should be made to do all the paperwork, speak the language, etc. I know a girl from Poland who is a very hard worker, and is almost at her wits end with the paper work and keeping her green card, etc., while the masses come in with no requirements. And nobody is catering to her native language of Polish. She is learning to speak English. If we are going to do it for one or 2 groups, we have to do it for all, or it's discrimination.

I would say the greater majority storming in are here for the freebies. We give them free medical, free food, free everything, all of which ultimately comes out of your pocket.

And as long as we're talking about "generalizing," note that I said the greater majority, not all.

I think we should treat all immigrants equally is all, and not give a hand-out. And sending one's child over the border to strong-arm us into allowing the parent is, is abusive to the child. Who just ships their kid over with a a parent? They are jumping the border to have their kid for their own reasons, not because they want to contribute to the betterment of American, or even themselves.

I did not say ALL. Remember that.

How did your lack of qualifications for a job - become a political rant?

[ In Reply To ..]

What do you blame it on when you don't have the required math skills? That we allow smart people to live?

not to put too fine a point on it... - other poster (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
but referring to "the greater majority" *is* generalizing.

The people I spoke about are not having others - "cater" to their language

[ In Reply To ..]
Seems like because you were denied a job because of not speaking both English and Spanish you want to put others down. I know no immigrant, legal or otherwise, who came here because of the "freebies." The ones I know want to be able to live in peace and work, take care of their families. You seem to know so much, the one lady who has been here for 8 years has varicose veins and unable to be treated because uninsured and not able to pay out of pocket so her legs hurt and the veins are unsightly. You really don't have all the answers you think you do.

Do the bilingual-requiring companies you speak of solicit business from - "border jumpers"?

[ In Reply To ..]
What does how anyone thinks we should treat immigrants have to do with hiring practices of businesses whose goal is to make money by soliciting business and satisfying customers from any and every demographic?

The web sites you cited.. Do they say specifically their product is being marketed to individuals who are "jumping the boarder"? Or to illegal immigrants specifically?

Immigration really has absolutely nothing to do with employment requirements. There are ESLs in this country who are citizens, gainfully employed, and just feel more comfortable speaking their native tongue. And some who may not speak English but still spend money. Why would a business owner want to cut out that part of their clientele? And I sincerely doubt they are catering to the ones who are "jumping the border," for goodness sakes!!

The post that I am responding to speaks nothing about your original post which addressed job requirements. However, the Politics board is ripe for this discussion.

I see how passionate you are about this. Maybe you should start a petition prohibiting all business owners from requiring bilingualism.

"All or greater majority" no matter how you put it, still generalizing - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Unless you know these people personally, you have no idea why they came to the US, even if they did come for freebies I doubt they'd tell you.

Have you ever been to Mexico? It's an extremely poor country. More than half it's population lack clean drinking water, running water, electricity or food; and a job is a luxury. I think they come here hoping to find work and have a better life.

As far as certain jobs requiring you to speak Spanish, I get that. I don't necessarily always agree, but I understand the logic behind it. There are far more Mexican immigrants than any other nationality. Why require a person speak Polish when the likelihood of coming in contact with a Poland immigrant on a daily basis is slim to none and most Italians already speak English. In cases where you seldom come across those languages, it's more practical to use an interpreter. But with Hispanics, the likelihood is very high that you will deal with non-English speakers on a regular basis.

You are missing the point. They are not looking to hire only Hispanics, nor are they looking to hire people who only speak Spanish.

They are looking for BILINGUAL people, i.e., people who speak BOTH English and Spanish.

If they provide services in Canada, they will be looking for French and English. In Europe, they might look for 3 languages and have no trouble finding them.

Your view that everyone needs to learn English is short-sighted. Not everyone can learn a foreign language as an adult. They may learn basic phrases, but be unable to go beyond that. If you disagree, go learn Spanish.

Companies have an interest in providing good customer service. That means communicating well with all customers. They don't have the option of shutting out a major part of the population and visitors to the US because of self-important bigotry.

When I was a kid I thought it would be cool to be a stewardess. But I'm too short. Shall I say it's not fair that the job I want won't allow me to participate because I do not meet their requirements?

If you serve the Spanish-speaking community, you need Spanish-speaking people.

The point of business is to make money. You make more money if you are able to communicate with customers. If there is a good chance that those customers will not speak English but will speak Spanish, it only makes sense to hire employees who can speak both.

This is not a question of immigrants but of status within the working world. When one works themself up to business owner, then they get to make the rules for the business. If you do not like the rules, work for a different business better suited to your point of view.

In my former life, I worked in agriculture. Even before I went onto formal education for it, I elected to take Spanish in high school because I knew I would need it in the agriculture industry that I hoped to make a living in one day.

I'm glad I did learn just enough to get by, as at several places I worked at, they had people working from Mexico. There were also Haitians and Cambodians as well.

I'm sure I sounded like a preschooler to the Mexican people, but I was able to make a connection at several places I worked at because I could at least communicate with them and not get frustrated with them as they were trying as best as they could to speak English. So, because I could speak just the teensiest amount of Spanish and showed compassion and apparently even leadership (though who knew just helping someone was leadership), that landed me a step up on the management ladder, which in turn looked kickin' on my resume.

They were all so incredibly nice. We took our lunch breaks together and they showed me pictures of their kids, their whole reason for coming to here to work. That was some 20 years ago, seems like a lifetime ago.

Maybe things have changed, I don't know, but I sure hope not. We are all humans on this planet and I really hate the thought of borders getting in the way of humanism. But, admittedly I'm naive like that.

I do not spend time worrying about if you or your mother or anyone else speaks my language. I care not one red cent. As long as you do not bother me like coming to my door and bothering me, I care less what you speak, pig Latin is okay, who gives a flying flip this day and time? Because someone asked for a bilingual person to do a job, others seem to flip out over it. I admire people who can speak more than me. Hooray for them! I don't care if you live next door, go to the grocery store where I do, speak and dress like you want, fine, you are not hurting me. I also admire people who want to better their lives and work and support their families. I give them a pat on the back for doing that.

I Must Be NutsAug 08, 2011
In a bit of a situation and I'm not sure what to do about it.   I'm divorced with teens.  The ex has very little contact with me or the kids and we are all fine with that.  He was always absent even when he was physically there anyway.  I have a boyfriend who is also divorced, no kids.   His ex walked out on him the final time after having left him several times in the past.  Not to mention she was constantly looking for her "next" husband on Match.com an ...

You Do Not Want Others To Think You Are Nuts?Jan 19, 2013
I read and think, cannot get any more crazy and yes it does. The football player who supposedly in love (and involved with) a person he has never even met? The football player said he kept up with the story because did not want people to think he was crazy. Well, guess what, I think right now you probably are in need of some very professional assistance. You have the money and you need to put it to some good use. To say you have a girlfriend (or boyfriend for that reason) and are in love with th ...

Drives Them NutsMar 23, 2011
This is what drives the Democrats in my state absolutely nuts. Tax credits for business will make their head spin. But, here's how it works in very, very simple terms, since I'm certainly not an economist (and I want to go to bed early tonight)  :-) Here's how it works: -company gets tax break/incententive to invest in the area -company uses money to expand/build/hire employees -employees become tax payers - off unemployment, food stamps, or other gov't assistance ( ...

Soup To Nuts!Jan 29, 2013
Can we assemble a multi-course menu of diseases and symptoms?  (My vote would be preferably withOUT getting scatological, being as I'm pretty sure all of us here are older than 8, or 10, or whatever that age is.) I'll start off the menu with a nice word salad! ...

Political Correctness Is NUTS!!Jul 13, 2015
Pretty soon, the left is going to lead the charge to take all religious interpretations out of names of cities and people. Can you see just about every city in California changing it's name, i.e., San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, etc. You get my drift. Also, every person with "chris" in their name will be forced to change it. No more Christopher, Christine, Christianne, etc. No more Jesus either. Won't that be a hoot. The ILLEGALS will love that one! ...

as they obviously feel that the poor cannot make any decisions for themselves and that they are higher and mightier than all, let them figure out how to take care of the children and feed the families. Mitt Romney Was Right Again! Yet People Thought He Was NutsJan 19, 2013

Wanna bet it will be soon? Because if he doesn't help France more than what he's doing now, you can bet your bottom dollar that another ally will bite the dust.  Note the date on the below article: Mali Responds To Mitt Romney by Matt Taylor  October 31st, 2012&nbs ...
