I am asked repeatedly by others about texting, time spent on FB and other internet activities. I do not text. I say by the time I am finished scanning every word in a document and seeing thousands of lines a day just do not want to stress my brain any further. Just trying to see am I an exception, is everyone texting now? TIA.;

I don't have a cell phone. I did a few years back but never used it, so I dropped it. As far as FB, I only check it about once a month. When I'm finished work, I shut off the PC and do something else, like go for a walk or read. I pretty much shun technology, and I'm very happy with my life that way.
The only technology I really like - anon2

is my Kindle. I love to read, but my eyesight is going and if I spend hours reading with my glasses, then my vision is fuzzy. On my Kindle, I just make the font bigger, no glasses and no eye strain. I'm with you on no cell phone, never had one, never text, gave up on Facebook, thought it was a waste of time.

I am right there with you. After the work is done, I just want to spend time with the husband and kids, a good book or outside doing something other than straining my brain trying to understand the docs. I rarely, if ever, text and prefer a phone call.

I have a cell phone, but its a pay-as-you go. The reason I have one is because if my internet goes down so does my phone and no way to contact my boss. I had someone ask me about texting once. No thank you, I think it's one of the most ridiculous inventions to have come out. Well second ridiculous invention. Social sites being #1.
My sis and some friends are all on social sites. She showed me once what it was about. Here is what the messages were like (and this is coming from a 57 year old:
So-n-so (8-year-old daughters name) woke up this morning. She's so cute when she first wakes up. She told me she loved me and I'm a great mom and I thought I was going to cry. Today we're going to the mall, blah, blah, blah. I'm thinking this is material of a teenager writing in a diary.
I had another friend (who is 55 years old) on a different site who I think was going through a second childhood. Told everyone of her new found love of heavy metal music, this group "rocks", that group is "cool". The drummer is steamy, blah, blah, blah.
I'm just not into that sort of thing. If I want to keep a diary I'll buy one with a little key in it and keep it by my bedside, though every day at the end of the day it would say "Woke up, logged into work, no jobs so kept checking back. Ate, went to bed. LOL (what an exciting life).
There is another reason against the social sites (surveillance). Not only that but DH is looking for work and he just read that potential employers once they have your name and address and all they go onto all the social services to see what you look like, hobbies, who your friends are. Luckily he's not into that either.
Give me my cats and a good movie. When I'm done working I don't want to be near computers. Life is too short to be sitting in front of the computer 24 hours.
Love your post - TiredMT

I love your view on texting and social sites! My husband says the same thing - everyone is complaining about DHS surveillance yet they post everything on social sites, even down to minute by minute posts. After work, my butt gets a break while I go out and exercise or crack a book. I do keep a diary, though, but I don't paste pics of my daily meals in it (one of my friends who is also going through a second childhood by watching stuff like Family Guy posts a picture of her dinner...every day).
I'm a huge Facebook fan, but I agree with you - about some annoying posts: (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
I have a few "foodie" friends who feel it necessary to post a picture of practically every meal they eat. Especially when they're at a fancy restaurant.
One of my pet peeves is posters on FB who get too political, either too far right or too far left. They usually end up getting blocked. And the PETA people. I once had an acquaintance who felt it necessary to bombard me with finger-wagging "shame-on-you's" if I so much as posted a cute photo of a baby tiger or a pet monkey. She would then start this diatribe about zoos, poaching, exotic pets, etc. Just because I posted a picture I happened to come across that I thought was cute. There was nothing in the picture that even hinted at it being a pet, or in a zoo, etc. It was just a tiger. I solved the problem by putting a complete block on her: She couldn't see anything I posted anywhere, and I couldn't see anything she posted anywhere. End of problem.
I'm a huge animal advocate, and I'm fully aware of the atrocities that happen to them worldwide. If someone posts a video on something such as killing elephants, or the Chinese clubbing raccoon dogs to death, I have the option to either watch, or not watch. (I choose not, having already seen too many of them.) However, when the accompanying picture is some horrible, graphic picture that can't be "un-seen" once you see it, I do draw the line there. An acquaintance recently posted one of those, and he was blocked after that.
So you're right about certain posts... the minute-by-minute "my life" or "my baby" posts, and my #1 non-favorite - the "look-at-what-I'm-eating" posts.
There's a certain unwritten etiquette about using Facebook that most people usually stick to, but some don't. Just like any other form of communication, I guess. But the positives of the site, which for me are being able to instantly see what my friends are planning to do for the weekend, or the specifics on an upcoming event, a road closure, breaking news in the city, weather, are like the Reader's Digest of email for me. One glance does it all!
A lot of my friends and I live in areas outside of San Francisco. When we're planning a get-together in the city, one friend posts a "Sutro microwave tower" photo weather report. If there's fog near the bottom half of the tower, the west side of the city will be cold, the east side about 10-15 degrees warmer. The people of SF have named the fog "Karl", and if Karl has swallowed up the entire tower, that means the whole city is shrouded in fog, and will be damp and chilly. ;)
You have rang my bell, also a huge animal - advocate and like you

I do not care to see what happens to animals be they a dog or an elephant, I cannot because sometimes the stories are just too much for my heart. I pass over those. I have a FB account and what you would mostly see on mine are pictures of cats, kittens and an occasional dog. I do not post what I had for lunch or other meals, mostly read other postings. I do not give out any information about my everyday life. Would hate to get a bunch of cricket sounds after posting.

taken at get-togethers on the weekend, or funny ones of our pets, and occasional "shares". I try really hard to be certain something I share is truly "share-worthy", and that other will find funny or interesting. I "like" certain apolitical posts or sites (I'm pretty much against the party system altogether), but don't feel any need to inflict my views on my friends and acquaintances!
We also share videos of performances, as many of us are involved in various types of performing arts. We post crafts or artwork we've done, a few vacation pics, and we usually post a childhood photo of ourselves on "Throwback Thursdays", which is fun.
One friend recently got a camera with an interesting feature that automatically makes photos look like either an impressionist oil painting, or a watercolor. He's been playing with that when we're all together on weekends, and posting the results. Most of them are amazing, and can transform certain photos into near works of art. The watercolor feature is great for portraits, because it sort of "airbrushes" complexions into something smoother and younger-looking... who wouldn't want that?
A note about Facebook: You don't have to have - your FB page open to the public. -sm

You have the choice of blocking certain individuals, or letting only friends read it, any of which you can un-friend at any time.
Beyond that, even among your circle of FB friends, if you want to have a private site with just 3 of those friends, let's say - you can start a "secret group" that only invited members can see.
I only post photos and written posts that I feel are acceptable to share. That way, even if a potential employer were to hack my site and read it (which I doubt would happen), the only thing they're going to learn about me is that I look younger than I really am (though my age and birthdate are NOT listed on my FB page!), and that I have fun activities and nice friends. If they don't like that, it's their loss, not mine.
Ditto. My FB controls are set so just friends can see posts - not even friends of friends
[ In Reply To ..]
Plus, I didn't fill out my profile with anything but my city and state on the off chance someone is looking for me. If someone did see my account, they'd see a nauseating amount of cute (to me)pictures of my cats, funny (again, to me) shares from Aunty Acid, George Takei, etc., and random complaints about idiot doctors, comments about TV shows, etc.
I have a couple of acquaintances who post very right wing political stuff and I am far left wing, so I ended up having to block their posts so I couldn't see it. I have another one who posted her minute by minute day and I ended up blocking her, too.
FB is a great way to keep in touch with family and friends in far flung places. I have family on the opposite side of the country from me and some in a different country and we would lose touch completely, I think. Ditto for former co workers who I always liked and had a good time with.
Social medial doesn't have to be the big demon out there if it is used responsibly. The problem is, people don't always use it responsibly.

my phone, or to even own a Smart Phone. I have a simple phone that I only use once in a while, with Consumer Cellular wireless service which is only about $11 a month. Even if I wanted to text, I wouldn't be able to see the tiny keys or the screen without putting on my reading glasses, which I keep at the computer, so sending a text while out on a walk wouldn't be doable.
I don't have the need to be in constant contact with my friends or family. For that, email and Facebook are enough. For me, Facebook has largely replaced email, because I can scan it quickly to see what's going on, without having to open and read emails. Also it's easier to see & post photos on Facebook.
Pretty much the only person I email or have phone convos with anymore is one of my sisters, who seems to have an identity-theft phobia about social media and/or online shopping/banking.
You don't need internet or a smart phone - to be able to text

I also have no desire after working to do any more computer work. My brain is fried after a long day as an MT and the last thing I want to do is text or FB. I'm the odd one out in my family for this reason, but if they want to find out what's up with me, they have my number.
I love the computer/internet - and use it

now for everything from watching movies, to teaching myself guitar, although I quit using FB. Honestly I just don't think anyone gives a rat's patoot about what I'm doing or thinking every single day, not even my "friends" ...people I barely know or know someone I know... just started seeming stupid, guess I'm a cranky old person now.
As far as texting, I find it very useful, especially since almost no one answers their phones any more, i.e. need something picked up from the store, want to send a pic, etc. I got rid of my high dollar fancy smart phone and hardly even call anyone any more since no one answers anyway. People I know can email me if they really want to talk, I'll tell them a good time to call. Once again, sign me O&C (old and cranky!).

He is my favorite person to hang around. I have no clue why people would rather talk on the phone, text or go to Facebook in what little free time they have with their spouse, kids, etc.
It's sad when someone picks the wrong person and would rather be doing somethning else other than spend time with the person.

Was on FB about 3 weeks, it was so sad to see most of my 50+ something friends desperately trying to make their lives sound exciting like they're in their 20s again or something.
Also shocked at all the exaggerating and/or 'leaving out' info, such as "wow my new job is great" but leaving out you were fired from the last one.
No thanks, I quickly found it to be a brag, lie, gossip and cheat forum.
Another happy hermit I guess.

FB is more of a management tool for me. I can use it to track blogs, sales, etc. It also me to keep in touch with family that I am not as close to. There, it is a tremendous help because I detest talking on the phone so I can meet my family obligations in a way I prefer.
My texting is limited to times when I need to communicate with DH but where talking is not preferred, like when he is riding the bus. I would much prefer people text in public than loud phone conversations. The only person who sends me texts though is DH because most know that I do not keep my cell phone on me. It is generally for emergencies and most people can send me an email.
