It quickly became apparent that it serves no meaningful purpose. It plays to one's vanities whilst at the same time degenerating human communication and inciting hatred amongst its users and peers. It's better at furthering vices than virtues. It's a vehicle for surveillance, stalking and every mischievous behaviour you can think of. While there is merit in social connectivity and initially fb was tapping into the ideology of global instantaneous human communication, it is utterly evident that the negatives have by far outpaced the positives. It's a global big brother house that deprives us of privacy, decency and civility. Much like sleep deprivation, it will lead to insanity in the end.

I quit facebook late 2012 - and have not looked back

No more worrying about who did what, or said what. It was the best decision I have made recently. More time to devote to my husband, marriage, school, homework and actually calling those who matter most, instead of messaging a bunch of people who only want to criticize me or spy on me. I will not be going back, I don't care if you got fat, broke up with your current boyfriend/husband, or if you have more pictures of your fugly kids that I can laugh at. Won't give you weapons to use against me anymore. Adios pendejos!

I think the fun and/or usefulness of FB depends - a lot on the user, and their friends.

I make it a point to be judicious about my posts. I also have lots of truly fun and outrageous friends, and their observations and photos make my day.

To each their own, I guess. But FB keeps me in the loop with everyone, which would be hard to do otherwise, since all my friends live in the city, and I live out in the boonies.

I disagree in regard to Facebook. I live in the Northwest and have friends in the Northeast and Midwest. Most of my family live in other cities so Facebook is one way we stay in touch. There is an internal messaging system that works for us better than e-mail because I know everyone will check Facebook first. I only have a few friends and only accept friend requests from within that circle. It is possible to adjust your privacy settings so that you don't get slammed with ads and you don't have to reveal your personal info unless you choose to do so. I actually find a lot of useful information there and the number of interest groups a person can join is unlimited. As far as peer hatred, well I guess it depends on who your "friends" are. There is good and bad in Facebook, but it really depends on how one chooses to use it. I don't find any worse than MT Stars, sometimes the griping and complaining here gets a little out of hand, and I think you are letting your paranoia get the better of you.

You're right. My circle of friends gives a LOT - of love & support through FB.

It's also great for organizing get-togethers. This weekend lots of them (not me - can't afford it) are going to a special event in another city, and it's making it possible for them to streamline the car-pooling process.

We also can get up-to-the-minute traffic and weather reports from whoever lives in the area we're headed to. We also sometimes participate in flash-mobs in the city (like large groups of people who suddenly start to sing or dance), and the ONLY way to find out about them is on FB.

People need to wake up and start enjoying their own lives - in REAL LIFE!

Social media websites like Facebook and twitter add absolutely no quality or value to your life… FB and twitter are nothing but negative to ones soul by sending subliminal misleading messages that people are 'happy'. I believe the more time you spend on these sites, the more likely you are to suffer from depression or have a dark emptiness in your soul. These types of sites are dangerous and harmful to marriages acting like a tracking device of where you have been, who have you seen and what you are doing. These sites pose a sickening risk of bullying risk of exposure to stalking pedophiles to young and old with so much personal data and information on your private life being exposed for the world to see??? In essence with If folks are wanting to broadcast and showoff their memories and experiences, pick up the phone and talk in person with your friends…..host a dinner party and talk face to face!…engage with your friends and family real time, not in fantasy land! FB and Twitter are just another poor mans version of glossy photoshopped cheap magazines….don't waste your time!

I've already quit facebook, each morning it was my first port of call and it would only usually be full of idiots complaining about how shit their lives were then the next they would be "loving life". People put their every thought on it, and we're all meant to ride this shit with them? ... then we have those who "Like" every single piece of crap and fill up our timelines, then the vaguebookers who would constantly tout for sympathy. It got to the stage where around half of my friends I'd un-subscribed from because of the above or the fact they couldn't hold their religious beliefs to themselves and had to impose them on all their facebook friends or would then say things like "don't understand some people" or "need to clean out my friends list" ... I've actually lost a massive amount of respect for a lot of the people I know, because I didn't realise they were so self obsessed and absorbed within their own lives and were so wiling to put themselves onto others so directly. I don't blame Facebook, it's just I didn't realise I knew so many assholes! I'm done completely with it now, deleted my account and all my pages outright, glad to be rid of it although do get a little bored now and again but my stress levels are back to normal and I don't hate the world anymore :)

What you're describing are people who don't - really understand FB etiquette.

It's my observation that many people no longer get together in person with friends, or have phone conversations or even email communication, because FB is so "one-stop shopping." I myself only check my FB page about twice a month because when I do sign on, planning to only be there for 10-20 minutes, I end up wasting an entire evening. And for what? I've learned very little that I didn't already know! I've limited my "friends" list to about 20, and that's already more than I really care about following. I'd delete my account if it weren't for the fact that it's the only way I can keep up with what my kids are doing!

social life improved immensely because of the ease of communication with my friends. Most of us use the site the way it was intended, and usually exclude those who "waste time" or just want to stir up trouble.

FB does have it's problems (the typical ones - greed of owner), but even when it eventually falls by the wayside, there will be another social site that pops up to take its place. I think social media, PROPERLY USED, is a blessing, not a curse.

All the "caring and sharing" on social sites is kinda fake - turning the internet into a cesspool

My take on FB is that it just takes away from precious family time together, in person. Frankly, I'm one of those weirdos who wants to sit with my husband after a long day's work, and he, me. I have no intention of ignoring my husband so I can play on FB.

I don't have children, but I would have no intention of ignoring them, either, if I did.

I have siblings who live out of state, and it's really quite amazing how you can keep up with those you care about without FB. Options if loved ones live far away: Cell phone, e-mail, and gosh darn, an actual written letter sent via snail mail.

I joined it for like 2 weeks, and decided it was just dumb.

The constant feeling of being left out, comparing my life to others and Depression. Facebook has made me more depressed and unsatisfied with life. I would log on and see "friends" posting pictures of a beach day or girls night I wasn't invited to. Pictures with people traveling the world made me feel invalid. If I posted a picture and no one liked it I'd become sad. It emphasized my loneliness. I think if you have a mental illness (like me) facebook makes it easier to relapse into unproductively sad moods. The only aspect I can thank it for is that it helped me figure out who really supports me and who was genuinely my friend. Since I've deactivated my profile I've been a lot happier with life and I have an easier time managing my depression and anxiety.

I am asked repeatedly by others about texting, time spent on FB and other internet activities. I do not text. I say by the time I am finished scanning every word in a document and seeing thousands of lines a day just do not want to stress my brain any further.
