Ready to walk

Posted: Jul 3, 2010

First let me tell you that my car has been hit a total of seven times while sitting still, either at a red light or parked in front of my house.  I am beginning to think I should have ordered a neon sign in addition to the bright red color when I bought it several years ago.

Yesterday (AGAIN) while driving I was making a lefthand turn at an intersection which has two lanes turning left.   I was in the extreme lefthand lane and proceeded to go around the corner.  Sure enough, there was a man driving in the rightsided lane to turn left who abruptly darted over in my lane in front of me,  missing me by what had to be inches.  What is it with people who don't look, don't care, are so arrogant, etc.  Of course, he was yaking on the cell phone at the same time.  After he made this move he immediately pulled in front of a guy in the other lane, all of this in an effort to zigzag around people to get through traffic.  This happens to me constantly.  I always think of my dad people when I see people who have no respect for anyone else.  He taught me the do's and don'ts in a high school parking lot and was an extremely cautious driver.

In my town a red light means almost nothing.  I literally have seen up to six cars go through a light after it has turned red.  How pink does it have to be to mean STOP?

Sorry, but at least I feel a little better now!

blind people on the road - white car

[ In Reply To ..]
Where in the world do you live? New York or Atlanta? As far as car color, everyone I know who is prone to being hit, has a dark colored or neutral colored car. But bright red? Hmmm... I always drive a white car for that reason-- nothing shows up in someone else's visual field like a white blip in the periphery of their vision. The only time I have ever accidentally walked out in front of a car, was when a light brown car was coming towards me, in broad daylight and in full view, my eyes just didn't register it against the backdrop of a suburban tree-lined street. It didn't hit me, but it scared me half to death to be walking across a wide empty street and suddenly there was a big car letting me walk in front of it. All the same... plain old dangerous driving like you describe, that's a different story. But blind spots exist in everyone's vision and it sounds like you need an extra guardian angel where you are!

if someone is starting to cross the street, you must stop and let them finish crossing. Pedestrians have the right of way. There have been 6 accidents this year because the car didn't stop. I think the fine is $300 for hitting a pedestrian in a cross walk. Doesn't matter.

Years ago while in Pittsburgh, sitting at a stoplight, light red, a little old woman was crossing a very busy street. She was directly in front of my car, light turned green, and you wouldn't believe the honking horns that wanted me to proceed with this little old lady in front of me. Just had to laugh at the idiots!!

Guardian angel - Disgusted

I think I already have a guardian angel! I am serious about being hit seven different times; rear-ended on two occasions at a red light and once hit very hard while I was waiting at a yield sign; three different hits from neighbors trying to back into their parking place, and one HUGE dent I discovered when I had it parked at a store. I came out and that's what I found. A friend suggested a plunger, which I used to pull most of the dent out. I live in South Central PA. I think at times I must be invisible. When I was rear-ended on Christmas Eve I got out and not so nicely told the young couple behind me how many times I had been hit sitting still, only to find out they were hit by an elderly man behind them, which threw them into me. I literally hate when people keep turning when the green arrow to turn has gone out. They just keep turning one after another while those of us across the intersection find outselves WAITING for them after our light has turned green. My brother once told me he can tell what a person is like just by watching how he or she drives. I think there is a lot of truth to that. There are so many careless, rude drivers out there who are taking a lot of dangerous chances. WISH ME LUCK!

Welcome to the new driving rules. - Backwards Typist

Posting speed limits does not help. Double yellow lines mean nothing either in this day and age. DH almost got creamed a couple times this year. I almost got it twice, once in the back end because someone was on their cellphone and didn't seem my turn signal, wound up in a yard, and one time because they didn't pay attention to my turn signal (turning left onto our road) and passed me. Good thing I saw the ijit before I started to make my turn.

On a 3 lane road a couple miles away, a lady was almost creamed by someone in the northbound lane passing over the double line into the southbound lane because he wanted to be the first in line when the road turned into 2 lanes a few feet away. She said it wasn't the first time it happened.

On our small 1-1/2 lane road, there are people who jog, walk their animals, and teenagers who walk this way to get to town. Some people drive 70 mph. Our neighbor, a retire state trooper, called the cops out a couple times, but it doesn't help. Some day, someone is going to get killed. Told DH they should let our road go back to dirt. Then they wouldn't use it. LOL

Welcome to the "me" mentality - tootsie

[ In Reply To ..]
and it is getting stronger everyday. Everyone seems to feel these days that the "rules" apply only to other people and that they are excused because they are, well, "me." ME first, MY car, MY driving, MY lane, MY life. There is no respect for anybody else these days and definately no compassion towards others, and very little patience on top of that, as well. ...and, I am sorry to say, it rubs off! I used to be a very compassionate and respectful person, always letting someone else go first or in front of me, thinking they would appreciate it and I might get a little of that back some day. I say "used to" feel that way until it started becoming more of a "right" with others to be disrespectful and discourteous. I don't think there is even a "courtesy" word any longer. Now, unfortunately, I act just like everybody else and take my ME time with all the disrespect and discourtesy that is bestowed upon me. I hate being this way, but I hate being a doormat too. Life is no longer the way it was meant to be...so much anger and rage these days. (really looking forward to the second coming)!!

Doesn't come close - Disgusted

You are so right. Many people take things and other people for granted, and think only of themselves. However, that just makes me determined to do it right, and it makes me appreciate the good people even more. Last week while shopping I had just a few items in my hand to buy. Two ladies in front of me were shopping together and had a lot of things in the cart. They not only let me in front of them, but about three other people as well. I thanked them for being so nice and again when I left the store. There are some good ones left, but it sometimes appear they are few and far between.

I know having a red car does not help - sm - ECMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have known several people who have had red cars, it is like the red flag to the bull. All of them had their nice new red cars hit within a month or so of purchase (accident not their fault, were all hit by others). Red attacts for some reason, not deflect. I think the only color that really stands out is yellow if you want a vehicle people will notice and hopefully not hit, but again their is no guarantee. If you have a light or lights that are a problem may campaign for a red light camera, if people get enough tickets maybe they will actually stop, or complaint on a regular basis to your local police, you would think they would jump at a chance to make the town some extra income. As for people on the cell phone, most of use are guilty of that at some point. I have a prepaid phone so I talk on it rarely and certainly don't call someone for anything trivial while I am driving, I practically never do but sometimes I do get calls whether it is work or DH, I do answer it. But I always try to drive sensibly if I happen to be on it and never stay on for more than 2-3 minutes But I do agree that people yaking away on the phone do present a hazard.

Anyone use Walk at Home videos? Just started the ones from Leslie Sansone and am at the brisk 2 mile (half houir) walk.  In my early 60s.
