Name Brand *OR* Store Brand?

Posted: Jun 14, 2010

I'm making out my very long list for Grocery Shopping and started thinking about various products for which I simply must have the Name Brand.  I always buy French's Mustard, Heinz Ketchup, Hellman's Mayo and Vlassic Sweet Relish.

I buy Ajax Dish Soap and Bounty Paper Towels.  I'd never purchase Store Brand Dish or Dishwasher Soap.  However, I'll buy Store Brand Toilet Paper and Paper Plates.

What are your "Must Haves" when it comes to Grocery Shopping?

;

name brand or store brand - not too picky...

I have to have name-brand ranch dressing, usually Hidden Valley, but at least has to be name-brand; tried the generics and they're just not the same!

Toilet paper and paper towels, dishsoap adn dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent and softener, most hair and face items, coffee and creamer, all have to be name-brand. I'll buy generic or store-brand medicines and prescription drugs, except when I used Benadryl, as the generic made my legs twitch (kind of like restless leg syndrome) when I tried to rest, of all things.

Other than that, I've become a BIG generic lover, and finally got husband on board (thanks to the economy) as well!

Ocean Spray cranapple, etc. - anonymoose

Nothing beats Ocean Spray (and I've tried them all).

Name brands only - mrs.krabs

Coca-Cola or any other soft drink
Cottonelle TP (My 16 yr old son and hubby are picky! No kidding!)
Aunt Jemima pancake mix and only the Butter Lite syrup.
Cereals
Coffee and Coffee Mate creamer
Mott's applesauce
Juicy Juice or Minute Maid juices
Pillsbury cookie dough
Campbell's soups
Tyson chicken
Morton salt

I'm not too picky regarding sugar, flour, canned veggies, frozen veggies, store brand milk. What's with the generic packaging always seeming to be inferior to the real thing?

I think that Costco and Sam's club generics... - Kendra

for the most part, tend to be superior products. I always buy name brand mayo and toilet paper. I prefer the Viva paper towels, but have been known to buy the generics. All hair products must at least be the cheaper name brands, but usually buy salon stuff. I really like the generic Best Choice animal cookies--way better than any other brand and Vons/Safeway (which I wish we had here in the South) had really good peanut butter chocolate cookies that are just like Girlscout cookies, only square. Mostly I am not too picky about name brand versus generic, but feminine hygiene products MUST, no matter what, be name brand. I also learned my lesson with a store brand false negative on a pregnancy test, celebrated not being pregnant with my husband with a bottle of champagne and 3 months later realized I had been pregnant the whole time. Some things are just worth spending the money on :P

I'm a whole foods type person - sm

I make a good deal of what we eat from scratch, even bread. So when it comes to food items I'm usually looking for basic ingredients which don't vary too much from brand to generic, IMO. But, I am brand loyal to Jif peanut butter. I'm also usually brand loyal to Suave shampoo and conditioner, because it's the least expensive, even when I have double coupons for other brands. I don't have a brand loyalty for orange juice, but I do only buy real o.j., not from concentrate.

Store brands are name brands - Triscuit

Usually chain stores buy "name brands" in bulk and put their own labels on the product. You can often tell by the shape of the container, when applicable.

Yeahhhh....they say that, but--- - sm

some things just aren't the same, like the light ranch dressing, for example. I only buy light, so can't vouch for regular, but the store-brand I bought had a PRONOUNCED difference in taste and thickness. Other things, not so much. Another food that tastes different with store-brand or generic is toaster pastries; nothing beats Pop-Tarts!

Brand loyal to Cabot butter & Hellmann's... - Hayseed

Also have to have the Cottonnelle TP with the green packaging and doggie on the front because it has aloe & E and as nasty as that sounds, we really like it. Being from Maine, everyone around here swears by Scott Paper, because of the paper mills (which have since closed up shop) but I think the stuff is like actual paper and, ew.
:-D

Cereals, old fashioned oats, bread, milk, cheese, PB&J, laundry soap & dryer sheets, shampoo, all are store brands.

We love Lever bar soap though, and dog food has to be Kibbles-N-Bits Homestyle, and paper towels have to be the kind that you can select the size--brand not important.

The few times of year we buy ice cream (strangely usually in the winter because ride is too long to get it home without melting otherwise) it has to be Ben & Jerry's.

Name brand/generic - SM

My husband insists on Dawn dishsoap, Lawrys Hawaiian marinade, Aunt Millie's bread, and Dial bodywash. He doesn't mind the generic brand at Target for cheese and things. Chicken has to come from Gordon's Food Service, hamburger and taco mix has to come from a local supermarket called Martins, broccoli and veggies and fruit come from Aldi. Most of the rest of the groceries come from Walmart and doesn't matter if generic or name brand. We have to use Air Wick plug-in air fresheners and Glade spray air freshener for some reason. I have to use Pantene or Dove hair products, Playtex tampons, Bath and Body Works body wash, but I can use Walmart brand contact solution and am not picky myself. My husband is the picky one.

Brand name/generic - Eurosepsis

My husband HAS to have Charmine TP, Dial Spring Water soap, Suave Men's shampoo (without conditioner) and Finesse extra-volume conditioner (lol). I buy whatever is on sale for myself. I use generic on all of our food and any OTC medications, although I will buy Aleve and Advil for my husband. For some reason he thinks there's a difference.

Whenever I buy generic he gives me a weird look. I think it's just smart.

My must-haves are whatever costs the least. So I - get Walmart brand of just about everything.

Actually, I recently found their chewy granola bars are better, and BIGGER, than the name-brand ones like Quaker.

Trojan - condoms

I don't care how many bells and whistles and whirlynubs are on the other ones. Only the Big T's for me!

I use coupons and in my state they double - mt

so I basically buy whatever I can get for the lowest price or even free (just pay tax). I love Publix's BOGO sales. That being said, if I find the sales and coupons to go with them, my family does prefer a few brands like Duke's mayo, Tropicana OJ, Dawn dish soap, Tide laundry detergent, Colgate toothpaste, Brawny or Bounty select-a- size paper towels, etc. I stock up when there are deals/rebates, and then I never have to pay full price for any of it. If you work the grocery and drug stores right, you can get amazing deals....better than the dollar store or Walmart store brands.

What Brand Of Shampoo/conditioner Do You Use?Jul 01, 2010
What brand of shampoo/conditioner/hair products do you use? Do you switch brands often or do you stick with just one all the time? I ran out of shampoo this morning and had to grab a bottle out of the cupboard that wasn't the same brand as the conditioner that I was going to use. Just wondering what brand of shampoo everyone else uses. I currently have Dove conditioner and Pantene shampoo in my shower. I switch brands all of the time. ...

I've also tried Hanes and Just My Size and whatever other brands Walmart sells. I don't like any of them. Any suggestions? I'm looking for cotton hi-cut or b ...

How Do You Store VegetablesMar 20, 2010
I am fed up with throwing away vegetables that have gone bad too soon after I buy them.  Everytime I throw something away I see my hard earned dollars going into the bin.  I think I may be storing them wrong.  I just leave them in the bags I put them in at the market.  Brocoli and lettuce are usually the first two to go.  How do you store vegetables?  Does anyone have a secret for keeping them fresher longer?  Forget those 2 vegetable bins at the bottom... afte ...

I Shudder To Think What's In Store Before Obama'sNov 22, 2015
I actually originally voted for Obama, but had reservations even then about his loyality to America, with his questionable birth place and connection to Reverend Wright.  He seemed like a nice, well-meaning person though, and Oprah endorsed him, so I took a chance.  Now, I'm very worried.  His allegiance seems anti America and pro Muslim/Islam/ISIS.  I've also considered that maybe he's stuck in the middle, under a pressure from both sides, and is trying to app ...
