Michael Moore, MSNBC, pounce - eager to exploit horror

By ROBERT LAURIE - Pray for these kids, don't exploit them

It took MSNBC and Michael Moore mere minutes to begin politicizing today's horror in Connecticut, as they began calling for gun control.

Via Twitter, Moore wasted no time in posting the following:

Michael Moore, NBC, pounce. Eager to exploit horror

Over on MSNBC, host Alex Wagner echoed the sentiment, saying “One would hope that there will be some political capital to reform the way in which we handle gun and gun violence in this country.”

Despite what Moore says, we're not about to get into a gun control argument until we know the details of the monsters who perpetrated this crime. When we have the facts, we'll discuss it.

All we can say now is that it's utterly, despicably, unimaginably, disgusting that people like Moore are so eager to exploit the death of small children to promote their long-term political agendas.

These shootings are a symptom of a diseased culture, a decreased focus on morality, and a nation that rewards its most horrific vermin with fame in the wake of their actions.  Guns inarguably make it easier for these people to carry out their crimes, but they are just tools. The real problem lies in the motivation of sick minds and the culture that creates them.

We'll be discussing solutions in the coming hours and days.

In the meantime, we should be praying for these young victims - not exploiting them.

;

Um... you realize you're doing the same thing here by posting this - politicizing it, that is.

I hope no one responds to your post.

Enough already.

OP, I was listening to Rush when he announced it, and he - IMMEDIATELY politicized it, actually

rather shocking, and he knew it, said a couple of times, now this may sound...harsh? or something like that, "BUT yadayadayada." I changed over to NPR to find out what happened, where they were interviewing an FBI expert in these things. 45-minute drive time talking about this tragedy and others like it, and especially the people who do it, with NO politicizing or trying to criticize anyone, just information.

Most of these people are not insane, and they don't snap. An amazingly high percentage, over 90%, tell people ahead of time that they're going to do something. There is a strong profile they fit, but unfortunately large numbers of "normal" people who never hurt anyone also fit the profile, meaning it's not useful in identifying the ones who will--until other clues show up, like someone reporting a neighbor who keeps bragging about the stock of weapons he's building and saying things like "everyone's going to be real sorry soon."

Tuesday's Oregon shooter Jacob Tyler Roberts - was like that

[ In Reply To ..]
No motive has been revealed just yet, but some information is beginning to emerge on him. He had some "hard knocks" growing up. His mom died of cancer before his 3rd birthday. His aunt was appointed his guardian and raised him. According to court records, this same aunt "misappropriated" an $18,000 inheritance he received from his grandmother as an early teen. He became "estranged" from her when he was 18 for unknown reasons. He broke his foot in 2007, an injury which prevented his joining the Marines, which was his main ambition.

According to the aunt, his best friend, the best friend's sister and his ex-girlfriend, despite these problems, he was described as an outgoing, friendly, happy person who liked to make people laugh. The ex-GF said they broke up this past summer, but evidently were still friends. He told her he was planning a move to Hawaii, so when he quit his job, sold his stuff and put his car up for sale on Craigslist, she didn't think much of it. She now doubts he was really planning the move.

The week prior to the shooting, she said his demeanor underwent a drastic change, where he became quiet and withdrawn. She saw him the night before he was supposed to board his flight, and said he appeared "numbed." When she questioned him about it, he told her he had a lot of things on his mind and was just trying to "detach" himself from Oregon in anticipation of his move.

The next day, he briefly visited his best friend and the sister, who said he told them he had things to do but would see them later. He gave the friend a silver bracelet and hugged him before he left to go to the mall. The girlfriend's last text to him asked him how his flight to Hawaii went, but in his reply he said he had gotten drunk and missed the flight. Of interest, the mom died at age 22, the same age as Jacob was. Her birthday was December 12. The mall shooting occurred December 11.

Apparently a lot of these killers, like Jacob maybe, are - suffering from depression, with its anger

at self turned outward instead of the usual inward. Very few are seriously mentally ill and disconnected from reality, or sadistic psychopaths. They do tend to be prone to paranoid feelings and behavioral and personality disorders.

What a strange story, though. Very different from our usual imaginings of a person who would do this and how he would behave.
"Not very serious" depression vs - psychopathology.
[ In Reply To ..]
Either way, it is reasonable to assume that destigmatization of mental illness and access to treatment just MIGHT have made a difference. Stepping up anti-bully and non-violent conflict resolution educational programs could also be useful.

at least 26 people are dead including at least 18 innocent babies, mostly of kindergarten age. It would be an insult to their short lives and to their parents and loved ones if we did not bring it up. If not now, when? We need stronger gun control laws.

Gun control is a political issue. Mass shootings are not - mass stabbings, clubbings, kickings,

[ In Reply To ..]
asphyxiations, strangulations, arsons, druggings, poisonings, drownings or explosions. Mass murders such as these overwhelmingly involve the use of firearms. No one is calling for repeal of the 2nd Amendment. Though I do not know what kind of gun the shooter used, typically the politics of gun control these days involve a more sensible approach to assault weapons and expedited access to other firearms that bypass background checks and other safeguards that seek to keep them out of the hands of the mentally unstable and criminals. BTW, your expressed outrage and accusations of "exploitation" are every bit as political as the tweets and broadcast reports that will INEVITABLY be revisiting and exploring this issue.

Now, suppose you follow your own guidance and say your prayers or do whatever you do to cope with these horrific tragedies and leave the rest of us alone to cope with it in our own ways, which also include anger and outrage over what is seen by many as inadequate gun control, and yes, POLITICS.

From the OP - I humbly apologize...

[ In Reply To ..]
for posting the above. I personally found it outrageous that anyone would take this particular moment to promote gun control. My heart is saddened by the trauma this one individual inflicted on a community and such young innocent children.

I was not trying to politicize gun control by posting the article. I was appalled by it and thought others might be, as well. I was not "jumping on board" with anything concerning gun control, and no matter what anyone thinks of the reporter, whomever he may be, I was only passing along the information on the internet. nothing more.

GOD bless all the little children! :-(

Apology very much appreciated. - Hopefully

you can take comfort to know you are no different than the rest of us when confronted with such unspeakable tragedy, especially when trying to understand the how and why these things happen. One of the things I think is most frightening is that our intellects are ill-equipped to handle the task of absorbing the gut-wrenching grief such purely emotional experiences force us to face, particularly in the case of a national tragedy, such as this. I think President Obama's emotional response to this is a good case in point. Regardless of our individual political views, I think it goes without saying that the comments he made were delivered, not by our country's leader, but by a shaken, grief-stricken human being who happens to be a dad.

Though I agree with virtually nothing in the article you posted, I do appreciate the sentiment expressed about a desire to see our people come together in an apolitical fashion to help each other cope. What I find most compelling about this situation is that most of us, though not all, are parents, but we all have sat in classrooms as school children, so there really isn't a person on this forum whose life remains untouched by this news.

On the subject of gun control, it's worth mentioning just how many victims' families and friends have turned to politics in the aftermath of mass (and singular) murders as a way to cope with the grief the rest of us who have not experienced such a direct loss cannot begin to fathom. I also appreciate that Michael Moore did not forget to mention the specter of the treatment of mental illness that so often is intertwined with these events. After all, the perps have families and friends as well, whose loss is just as profound.

You did not need to apologize for anything! I, for one, - agree with you. The problem more and more

are very very sick, mentally ill individuals dreaming of mass killings and then doing it. They will find ways, whether a gun, a bomb, etc. There are usually warning signs. Instead of always calling for gun control, we need to change the mental health system. Law enforcement is virtually helpless, even psychiatrists are somewhat helpless until the person inflicts actual harm on someone else. It should be easier to report and detain a person suspicious of being dangerous, in MY humble opinion. Look at Colorado/movie theater. There were many warning signs, and yet he was able to follow through.
And just how, pray tell, was he able to - "follow through?"
[ In Reply To ..]
Nice try, but you cannot make the guns control issue disappear by trying to separate motives from means or by playing the lone wolf/"monster" boogeyman game I see some conservative pundits already trying to float. In the context of mass SHOOTINGS, they go hand-in-hand.
Here we go again - old and burned out
[ In Reply To ..]
The Colorado shooter was able to buy 6000 rounds of ammunition on line without anyone questioning it. You can also buy any kind of assault weapon at a gun show and could probably even get a bazooka if you wanted one. Yes, mentally ill people commit these crimes and the easy availability of guns and ammunition makes it that much easier. Do you really think you could stab that many victims in the same amount of time?

You forgot to include Obama's name. - I knew he couldn't resist.

statements of facts and opinions by a number of people. Intentional or not, the OP did politicize the issue, which several pointed out. Otherwise, the comments are pretty much relative to politics and how people cope. That ganging up thing is not grounded in reality.

in the shooter's car! He never even used it. He had two hand guns with him. I am not defending him at all in any way shape or form, but misinformation leads to unnecessary acts. the MOTHER purchased the guns LEGALLY, according to the news. WHY is another question, but the shooter did not use the AR-15 in the shooting. Just keeping it clear.

Oh, what a relief! He only had the AR-15 in his car, - but didn't use it at the school.

[ In Reply To ..]
As long as we are "keeping it clear," I haven't heard any official source clear the assault rifle from any wrongdoing. No statements have been made about what kind of bullets or how many of them he pumped into the woman found at the residence, presumed to be the mom. They have been very cautious about that presumption, in light of the fact that Adam Lanza's girlfriend and his best friend are currently "missing."

We also have no information just yet about whether or not he had AR-15 ammo with him. If he didn't use the assault rifle at the school, why then do you suppose he had it in his possession? Could be part of his plan went awry. Maybe he had plans to use it in a THIRD location, but ended up committing suicide before he ever reached that destination.
