How old were you when you left home and declared your independence?

I was 18 !I had been dreaming of that day, since I was 11 years old.I knew what I wanted to do and let nothing stop me on my road to independence.I thanked my Daddy for his encourgement because it made me a stronger person to be on my own.I did the same for my daughters and they to are strong independent women of whom I am so proud!YALL? gab

I was 16. I moved out of my parent's house two weeks before my 17th birthday!

Had some property to sell while still teenager and - court action emacipation was done

Gosh, it has been so long and hope that is the word looking for but had to be go through court in order to sell my property when still in high school. That was the only reason done.

my 17th birthday, had our daughter 9 days before my 18th birthday. I and my husband have been on our own since teens and still together--3 kids, 4 grandchildren, 40 years later. It's been a great life!!

I had never dreamed of leaving home. Growing up I expected to get a job, get married, have babies and stay where my friends and family were. But economic times were rough, and I felt I wanted to take my life in a different direction and do something good.

So joined the Army. Talk about growing up fast.

joined the Army at 19 and 2 months later found herself in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. She grew up really fast too. I just aged... :(

I was in at a time when the President was President Reagan. It was the best time to be in the service. No imminent threats (except I was in when the Faulkland Island incident occurred which was a big deal), and there were a couple other close calls with other countries that were not our friends. But no where nothing like what is going on today.

With desert storm I do imagine you would have aged quite rapidly with worry for anyone having to serve in that. I do hope she is safe wherever she is now.

that incident. That was back in the early 80s, wasn't it? My daughter would have been around 10 at that time. Any "incident" is stressful when you're children are in the service but I understand what you mean. Our daughter made it through safe, not the "military experience" she was expecting. Thanks for your concern. She now has an 18-year-old son graduating high school this year and she is downplaying the military to him. ;-)

Yes, you are correct. It was in either 1980 or 1981. Looking back it was not such a scary incident, but when your in the Army it's your job to be prepared. We were driven to some site (not sure where because it was the middle of the night) where we had to stand guard and wait for the next order. The second incident was when an east german soldier was removing an explosive on the border (which usually meant they were getting ready to send their tanks and armor out) and he accidently blew himself up. We were all called in sitting around at 10pm waiting to get the signal whether we were going to go to war. We were specifically told it was not a drill. Finally at 2 am they released us.

I am glad for your daughter's safety, and yes I would be downplaying the military if I had a son too.

As soon as I had a job that paid enough for me to live on my own, I was outta there. I was around 21 or 22. My dad is a very loving father but also very controlling. I was 21 and he was still giving me a curfew. He's just a control freak by nature - would live your life for you if he could and make sure it was perfect. I referred to it (only to myself) as getting out from under the lion's paw. I used to go out nightly just to get away from home. Once I got my own apartment, I stayed home and relaxed after work. No need to run away from anything.

my 4 siblings, who each moved back in with Mom at least once, and in 2 cases - twice. They've all gotten help buying cars, houses, college money, etc. The only money I ever asked for was from my dad, and it was a LOAN, which I paid off in full, with interest. So, maybe being slow-to-mature was a good thing in disguise. I never went through that just-out-of-college-and-bouncing-every-check-I-write phase.

Now I'm 28... But my parents are still the people I ask about EVERYTHING. im still almost like a child in certain aspects, even though I am extremely independent... yay ladies! :)
