Homeless man gifted boots has already sold them, illustrating

Posted: Dec 3, 2012

From Salon.com: The image of NYPD officer Larry Deprimo giving a pair of new boots to a homeless man in Times Square became an online sensation when the NYPD posted the tourist’s photo to Facebook. The reality of how the story played out, however, further illustrates that one heartwarming picture can offer a misleading narrative about the challenges of homelessness in New York.

The New York Times found the homeless man in the picture – identified him as Jeffrey Hillman — wandering in Manhattan Sunday night, once again barefoot. He told the paper, when asked about the boots he had been gifted, “they are worth a lot of money.” He also noted that despite being grateful for DePrimo’s gift, he wanted a “piece of the pie” with regards to his Internet fame, as his image was posted “without permission.”

:) We all have our own  viewpoints, even if they're all we own.

no...he did NOT sell them - sm

"Asked about the $100 all-weather boots Officer Larry DePrimo gave him on Nov. 14, Hillman says he's hidden them because 'they are worth a lot of money.'"

and she said, while his heart was in the right place, the officer might as well have painted a target on the guy's back.

Valid point. It's a complex situation.

I did wonder how long they might stay on his feet. - Homeless make good victims--self and others'.

so, being homeless makes one a liar? I realize living on the streets might affect one's credibility, but it is the original poster who was unable to tell the truth about the story. This we know - at least those of us who actually read the story.

I heard he sold them, too. I also heard that the officer paid $75 for them, not $100. - backwards typist

the salon.com article you are referencing does not indicate that he sold them. Did you lie on purpose or was your bias blinding you?

The Salon headline reads as follows: "Homeless Man Shoeless Again in NYC Despite Boots".

You can twist the story, but you can't twist the headline.

edited to add (5:14 pm): My apologies. Apparently there were two headlines on this subject in Salon; my error.

they don't provide an actual link, but if you click on the word in red (I think it say's "found"), it takes you to an article where you can't easily see what web site it's from on the top.

Try it yourself and see what happens. While your link to the Salon article is appreciated to see where the OP got their distorted info from, telling someone to behave decently is a bit much. If the OP wanted people to check out the Salon article, they should have provided the proper link.

Just sayin'.

you told to behave decently, and their link is from Salon too. Weird. Basically same story with 2 different headlines (and probably different spin even though I didn't compare them word for word). I guess they want to keep everyone happy.
UPDATE on this story...(check it out!) - sm

I sent an inquiry to the writer who reported that the man sold the boots. She has since redacted the unsubstantiated headline and added a correction as follows:

"CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated that Hillman had sold his boots; this has not been verified and reports also note that he may have hidden them".
my apologies - indecent one

I live in the burbs of NYC, and I love to go to the city to buy homeless boots! - Al Fabbet

[ In Reply To ..]
USED homeless boots rock! Folks are just lining up for miles to get their hands on a pair.

Seriously, the only people who would buy boots off a homeless person's feet are other homeless people... more likely traded or - even worse - stolen by fellow NYC homless folks who are famous for their mental stabilty. If posting this was some sort of attempt to prove fraud/abuse by those who accept charity and/or welfare... it's bottomfeeding, IMO.

Wow. Where'd you get that? I was homeless as a small - child in a city myself. nm

Have you ever been to NYC and experienced what it's like? - Al Fabbet

[ In Reply To ..]
A large portion of the homeless situation in NYC is not the result of hard times, but more a problem of mental illness that is not properly treated.

My issue with this topic being brought up - while the article link even states that this man hid the boots - isn't even that he, according to the post, sold them... it's the fact that they're trying to make this man sound like another moocher while there is a chance that there is an underlying mental condition explaning his actions/statements, disregard for what these folks have to do to get by on the streets, and expecting the other posters on the board would be gullible enough to believe there would be some kind of demand for boots off a homeless person's feet that he would be able to profit off selling them in the first place.

It's a sad situation that the OP is trying to twist into another moocher story... again, bottomfeeding IMO.

and the largest city I've visited is New Orleans. Everything I know about NYC I learned by watching "Law and Order." And *I* get it. You have to be pretty entrenched in your small worldview not to understand what Al Fabbet is trying to say here.

I posted this simply as a wry comment on the real world and how hard it is to help a lot of people.

I've lived in the old downtowns of many cities, including Hollywood as an adult, and have seen many mentally ill on the streets. I like to think maybe I'll go back and spend my oldest age downtown. I like the vitality.

The long-term homeless are typically mentally ill and virtually always dysfunctional in some way, immigrants more often than not an exception of course. Many are schizophrenic and some actively dangerous. My mom was suffering from severe depression back in the days when they were calling it mental breakdowns and treating with electric shock. She escaped a place she remembered with horror and loathing 50 years later and came and kidnapped me from the foster home I'd been put in.

That this man hid/sold/destroyed/lost/whatever these boots that were supposed to keep his feet warm in a NY winter, and has a strong personal opinion that sounds as irrational but firm as anything we may read on this board, is entirely typical.

I sometimes give $ to the homeless - RC

It depends on how I'm approached.

I know some people will take the money and do things with it which I think are stupid, but the fact is that once I make the decision to let that money leave my hand, I have to just accept that sometimes it helps the person, sometimes it doesn't. You have to go into it knowing that and not get all butt-hurt if you get taken.

I agree. A true gift is freely given without conditions. sm - VTMT

especially when he was assigned to give interviews. Probably hoping he wouldn't see the boots go by in some old lady's shopping cart, or some such thing, while the cameras were rolling. The lack of illusion makes his attempt to help this guy the more admirable. And as someone said, hopefully the gift keeps on giving. :)

Homeless for a reason - blondee

My husband and I travel a lot to the bigger cities and are often approached by the homeless asking if we can spare a few dollars. My thought on this? He sold the boots to by either drugs or alcohol. Most homeless people nowadays are homeless for a reason. If they don't follow the rules of a shelter, like no drugs or alcohol, they can't stay there. It is extremely easy to get help these days -- if you want it.
