In 1999 Gilchrist Metal Fabricating got $800,000 in tax-exempt revenue bonds to set up a second manufacturing plant and buy production equipment to produce High-def TV broadcasting equipment. They got a $550,000 SBA loan in the late 80s plus matching funds from federally-funded New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center. He subcontracted with the US Coast Guard in 2008. Another Navy contract in 2011 was for $83,000. Owner Jack Gilchrist says, “I’m not going to turn a blind eye because the money came from the government. As far as I’m concerned, I’M GETTING SOME OF MY TAX MONEY BACK. I’m not stupid, I’m not going to say ‘no.’ Shame on me if I didn’t use what’s available.”
According to the Ohio School Facilities Commission, Sollmann Electric Company was awarded a $915,117 government contract for his work on Trotwood-Madison City School District in 2006. In 2007, they recommended finalization on a $1,080,700 bid for work in the Dayton County School District. In 2008, he did contract work for Horace Mann School in Dayton. In 2010, Sollmann was awarded a $1,689,829 contract for Miami East School District. In 2011, he submitted a bid of $274,792 to the Ohio Department of Administrative Services for a contract at Rhodes State College.
According to the Ohio Tax Credit Authority, Seilkop Industries received a $74,114 tax credit that increases by a multiplier of 1.022 over a 4-year period and $30,000 tax-funded expansion help.
Endural LLC and Philatron Wire and Cable (“We Did Build That” roundtable contributors in Costa Mesa CA) received hundreds of thousands in government contracts. An auto repair shop in Roxbury Massachusetts Romney claimed succeeded because its owner took risks and had dreams in reality started out without any money and built his business with a local government-issued bond. Millwood, Inc got a $44,226 worth of state tax breaks, says the Ohio Department of Development. Spring Service Corp received a $70,000 Ohio Workforce Guarantee in 2005.
