At what age does "elderly" begin?

Has anyone ever noticed that sometimes elderly people want a dog, cat or bird after a loved one dies? This happened with my MIL. She wanted a dog after her husband died, but she was at an age where two things were occurring: 1. The physical ability to care for the dog (walks, cleaning messes)was diminishing. 2.
