Any yoga enthusiasts out there?

Posted: Jul 12, 2011

I'm looking to get into better shape physically and mentally, and thought I might give yoga a whirl.  However, I have no interest in doing this in the presence of others, so was wondering if there are any good DVDs for beginners???  I know it might be hard to get my form right without someone to watch and tell me if I'm doing it correctly or not, but does anyone have any suggestions?  Also, if it makes a difference, I have satellite for television, not standard cable, and I'm having a tough time even finding a fitness channel that carries exercise programs.  Thanks!

I have been doing yoga for about 10 years now - and highly recommend it

as a way to get into shape both physically and spiritually. I usually practice in community but there are many websites out there, one of the best being yogadownload.com with lots of levels of classes and your can check out Youtube as well. There are also many DVDs, just be sure to pick a beginning level. You might also find some experienced yogis near where you live on Craig's List or Facebook who will share a practice with you to make sure you get off on the right foot. Best of luck on your journey! Namaste!

One DVD that I have found is just called Yoga for Beginners with Patricia Walden. I got it from Walmart. I started massage therapy school and for our first class we are doing yoga. I do find it helpful with the instructor there to correct us if we need it. I also find that everybody is so focused on themselves they don't have time to stare at anybody else!

There is also a book called Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar (who Patricia Walden studied under). If you have any interest of knowing the reason behind each pose.

I wish you well!

I do it at my local YMCA - landroverlady

I absolutely love it. I also do Pilates which kind of go hand in hand. I have never been heavy but I bulked very quickly if I did any kind of weights. Yoga and Pilates has lengthened me and I look much thinner now. It makes me feel wonderful. I highly recommend it! I am going tonight as a matter of fact.

Is Yoga Demonic?Oct 12, 2010
From the Seattle Times: Is the downward-facing dog somehow ... demonic? A recent essay by the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., warned Christians that yoga is contradictory to Christianity. And local megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church went even further, saying earlier this year that yoga is "absolute paganism." "Should Christians stay away from yoga because of its demonic roots? Totally. Yoga is demonic," Driscoll said. "If you just ...

Christians And YogaAug 18, 2013
I have an acquaintance who is a Christian. I recently started yoga classes because I have back problems and I think it will help. I mentioned this to my acquaintance, thinking maybe she would like to come along some time.  She then proceeded to tell me that I need to immediately stop the yoga because it will lead me down the path of meditation and then into Hindu religions.  She also said she won't be able to associate with me anymore if I continue with the yoga classes because I ...

Affirmations Are Like Yoga For Your BrainJan 20, 2014
I'm feeling particularly stressed - sending out things to lit journals, with the ever-present possibility (about 95% on a good day) of being rejected. And it's like, you can sit and stew, or you can do your affirmations - it's very hard to call them to mind when you're stressed out - it's like I have to have them printed in front of me to be able to do them when I'm stressed out. I am worry free. I release all fears of not being perfect. I am good enou ...
