This past week on The Amazing Race, the teams were in Phnom Phen, Cambodia.
They were given a photograph and told they had to go to the building where the photo is showcased..... there they would get their next clue.
I was stunned........ Of the 8 teams, 16 players - only one man (older) knew who this woman was. Most had no idea and one thought she was Queen Elizabeth.
I shared my dismay with my DH and told him it must be an age thing. He said age was no excuse after all, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Eleanor Roosevelt were before our time and we would recognize their photos.
I decided to share one with of our daughters and our oldest granddaughter (who is 20)....... Thank goodness they both knew who this woman was...... In fact, Amanda wrote back - "Of course, MomMom...... that is ______"

On one of the shows, they asked COLLEGE students who they thought was the most influential president, and one dumb girl remarked "Benjamin Franklin". Then you wonder why people are so stupid. How about getting back to the 3 Rs and teach kids how to read, do math, have proper English, etc.? Oh, sorry, that wouldn't be "politically correct"-- I forgot.

Although I agree with you that condoms and gay rights do not belong in schools, I do believe that part of the failure of the school system must be blamed on the parents. We simply cannot expect our children to go to school and get every little thing they need. People send their children to Kindergarten completely unprepared and, therefore, much of Kindergarten is spent teaching the alphabet, et cetera; teachers must teach children things that they should already know. If there were more parent involvement in academics, I believe that children would learn a lot more of what gets missed right now.
