I am hoping someone can give me suggestions

Posted: Jun 5, 2011

I have an antique seed drawer that I use as my kitchen island, and in the glass doors I have different pastas, beans, etc.  It is beautiful.  I have had this island for years now, and change the pasta and beans at least twice a year, as they get dried out and begin to look white in color.  Well.... now I am getting bugs :-(.  I am sooo upset, and have no idea what to put in the glass fronts now.  There is no way I can continue to use food products.  I am wondering if anyone could give suggestions as to what to put in my island now.  I really like the pastas and beans, as it looks very country.  Any ideas?

here is an idea - dont know if it will work or not

Try using a shellac type of spray and spray your beans and pasta, and then the bugs wont get them and you wont have to change them out.

I am sure a craft store would sell something like that.

You guys have me all excited now. I am going to use your ideas. There is a cardboard backing that slides in as the back of the glass windows to hold whatever it is you put in them. I am going to cover one of them with either scrapbook paper or wallpaper, and glue a picture my granddaughter drew of her and me (she was only 5 when she drew it and it is absolutely adorable). Then I am going to put a layer of marbles and jacks in the bottom of that one. I am going to put potpouri in 2 of them. Marbles in one, and broken colored glass in another. I cannot wait. You guys are the best, and thank you so much for your creative ideas. I was brain dead.

colored sand, alternate with seashells. leaves for every season (you can spray those, too), or just the fall ones from green to yellow to burgandy. Odd items, safety pins, buttons, child art, collectables like vintage jewelry...

this can get addicting.

Seal the jar lids - Kim

[ In Reply To ..]
Could you seal the jar lids so there would be no way for bugs to get into them? I would think if the lids were sealed then maybe bugs couldn't smell the pasta and wouldn't notice it. Just an idea.

On the other hand, I kind of like the marble idea too. If you have lots of jars to fill, maybe other country/vintage type things might be cute too, like jacks, beads or small toys, etc.

and you need to have the post you are talking to open before hitting that 'post aa reply' button or it gets confusing what you are replying to. Either way, it's glass cabinet door windows referred to in both the original post and 'dried flowers'

no problem - just a tip for when these threads get to going half a page. I like the jacks and beads idea! - especially beads.

Marbles. Aquarium "rocks" or glass pebbles. - SS

Maybe you could use it as a functional pantry. Store the beans and pasta and EAT THEM on a regular basis, filling back up as necessary.

I've heard simply sticking a bay leaf on the shelf in your cupboard keeps the bugs away. - sm

I've no idea if it works, just something my sis-in-law told me.

I would guess emptying and refilling regularly would be too - big a job. NM

How about dish towels? - ColtsFan

I'm not sure that this would work, but could you cut cardboard to fit behind the glass and cover it with a country pattern dish towel? They have so many pretty ones out right now in great country colors.

Identify the ways in which the imposition and intrusion of the federal government with regard to the states now differs from that of England's relationship with the colonies at the time of the American Revolution. It's time, and past time, to bring the federal government to heel before there's no meaning whatsoever to the concept of a "state". ...

There's a guy who I am just friends with (we all kind of hang out together at a local track).  We all walk together at various times sometimes in a group, sometimes 2 at a time or 1 at a time.  This guy and I usually have quite enough to talk about, but occasionally this guy will lapse into total silence.  I have seen him do this with just me, or with me and another person, or a group so it is not personal.  The trouble is, if it's just me and him, that I start feel ...

Hi all- I am in serious need of Christmas gift suggestions, but not just your ordinary giving a gift.  We have some friends who are traveling to Ecuador for 3 months, starting in January. I am wanting to get them an International gift credit card, but I have heard that even using a credit card is a big rigamarole in that country, advance notice, etc. Does anyone know if getting an International calling card (when I'm not the one traveling) is a problem? I can't buy them somethin ...

Suggestions...PLEASE!!!Dec 20, 2009
Okay, so our new neighbors upstairs apparently brought a "gift" with them to share with all of the tenants... COCKROACHES. We've found two so far today, and have lived here for well over a year without ever having them before, so my assumption is the new tenants upstairs brought them with them when they moved in.  Now that I'm done panicking and gagging, I'm still mortified that I have these eight-legged filthy bandits anywhere near me, I thought I would ask on this board ...

Okay, so this isn't earth-shattering, but I'm looking for a solution. My husband is in the retail business and he's always got a wad of keys in his shorts pocket (FL, hence the shorts as opposed to pants!). Anyway, the metal color or whatever it is from the keys leaves stains around the outside of the pocket area that I cannot seem to remove--the metal color like seeps through to the outside. I've tried all sorts of spot removers, leaving detergent to soak on the spot, etc ...

Help, Please. Need Suggestions.Dec 12, 2016
I really hate writing this, but I have nowhere to turn and thought maybe I'd get some suggestions of things I can do. Things are bad for us financially.  My husband was laid off from his job a couple months ago.  Within 2 weeks I got a layoff notice.  We were finally getting back on our feet after another financial crisis and then this happened.  He has not been able to find work (older worker) and I found a job, but it is PT and is making less than what I used to make. ...

I'm Hoping A Fellow MT Can Help Me With Something...Jun 22, 2010
I haven't had to deal with credit cards since my divorce.  So, I finally got one of my own with 10,000 credit limit.  Why they gave me that much  I'll never know.   Never had to use it, that is, until a couple of months ago when I had an unexpected medical bill of $9000, so I had to practically max the card out.  I don't know WHAT I would have done if I didn't have that card to put it on.  So, I looked at my statement today....says my last paymen ...

The Congressional Budget Office report has come out with the facts on TrumpCare.   CBO and JCT expect that this legislation would increase the number of uninsured people substantially. The increase would be disproportionately larger among older people with lower income—particularly people between 50 and 64 years old with income of less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level (single person making $26,760 per year.)
