"Apparently, it doesn’t matter where a black person walks in this country. Police will always find a way to arrest them and violate their rights. But this time, officers bit off more than they can chew.
Television producer Charles Belk is tall, bald, and black as are many African-American men in America. However, based on that broad description, Beverly Hills Police Department arrested Belk for simply walking down La Cienega Boulevard on Friday night. They were looking for a bank robbery suspect who fit the description, which basically means every tall, bald, and black male in Beverly Hills could have been arrested.
The arrest turned out to be false after police finally reviewed surveillance footage after six hours had passed, and the way they treated Belk has stirred outrage. Police stopped Belk, slapped on the cuffs and made him sit on the sidewalk as more police cars showed up on the scene. As Belk describes in a post on Facebook, police wasted hours processing him as a suspect and denied him his due process rights throughout the ordeal."

Within an evening, I was wrongly arrested, locked up, denied a phone call, denied explanation of charges against me, denied ever being read my rights, denied being able to speak to my lawyer for a lengthy time, and denied being told that my car had been impounded…..All because I was mis-indentified as the wrong ‘tall, bald head, black male,’ … ‘fitting the description.’

[ In Reply To ..]I have American Italian friends who are ALWAYS sent through secondary and tertiary inspection at every airport in the USA because they are dark skinned and have dark hair. I guess if one fits into a profile, it's to be expected in this day and age. It's sad, but true.

As the mother of adult black males, these generic descriptions should not be enough probable cause. So is it also okay to be denied due process, talk with attorney, make phone call, etc. We must never accept this as a society, NEVER.

[ In Reply To ..]Thanks to people in upscale neighborhoods renting out sheds, broom closets and maid's quarters as extra cash income, and/or in exchange for property maintenance, I lived in a backyard pool cabaña in someone's backyard in an area made up of mostly "gentlemen's ranchettes" in partial exchange for horse care. My BF, who did yard maintenance and chauffeur duties for another homeowner, also lived in the same area. I had long hair, wore a denim jacket and patched jeans, and he had hair as long as mine, and drove a 1951 Studebaker pickup truck.
He was driving me home from dinner late one night and the local sheriff followed us all the way down the road I lived on, and finally pulled us over. He detained us for a long time, inspecting every inch of the truck and scrutinizing us closely. He asked why we were going so slowly down the road. "Because I'm in 2nd gear, and because the deer always cross just back there a ways," he said.
The sheriff waited for us to pull into my driveway, and to watch me get out and walk down the driveway and into the back gate. We were sure he just pulled us over because, although we're white, we "looked like hippies."

[ In Reply To ..]This reminds me of something that happened decades ago. I (a white woman of Jewish ethnicity) was the maid of honor for a dear friend (also white) who was marrying a black man. The couple had a party at her home and I met a black man who said "I was arrested for DWB." I asked him what DWB was and he said "Driving while black." He was driving around in his new BMW (he was a highly-paid Silicon Valley computer engineer and made tons of money) and drove into a ritzy neighborhood just to look at the homes. The police pulled him over, told him to get out of the car, and called for backup. One of the arresting officers asked him where he got the car. He calmly named the dealership. He was asked if he was carrying a gun, etc. etc. It was all finally resolved when he showed them the car's registration but they had just assumed that because he was a young black guy he shouldn't be driving a BMW. What a strange, sad world.
