Am I missing something?

Posted: Apr 16, 2014

I grew up going to church and Sunday school from infancy until I graduated high school.  Sis and I were episcopal until about 4th grade, then started going to a Methodist Church til high school, then catholic services.  I consider myself of the Methodist faith because I agree with more of their beliefs than other.  Many many years ago my sister was visited by a couple of young men (not Jehovah) who talked to her of their faith and so she switched.  No big deal to me.  It's not my type of religion but she's happy.  Well a couple months ago my niece was baptized and my sister said that ever since then she's become (don't know what to say about it, but the examples are)...before my niece was baptized they used to go over her high school friend and daughters house on Sundays, watch movies and sometimes sleep over or go to a movie and out to eat.  Now since baptism my niece dictates that nobody in the family can go out because its Sabbath.  Sis says if they are talking about doing something niece will hold out her hand and say, nope, nope we can't go out, it's Sabbath and so they don't.  She said her friend has become kind of annoyed and my sister tells her, well I can't ask her to go against her beliefs.

So, what I want to know is am I missing something.  I don't remember ever learning you couldn't go out on a Sunday.  Sunday was a day of rest but we'd go over to family or go to get something to eat or even a movie.

I mean it's their life and if that's how they want to live it's their life, but now they are letting their 8-year-old decide what they are going to do (it sounds like - I don't live near them).  Sis says my niece is telling everyone about the Bible and God and preaches to them and just says things as though she knows more than others.  My sisters proud of it and encourages it.  I'm finding I'm getting creeped out about it.  She's an 8 year old girl.  I think it's important to learn about Jesus and his teachings, but I just don't remember any of what they are saying.

Can someone tell me where it says you are not supposed to go out on Sundays.  Like I say everyone has their own take on religion, but there is something about this that is just kind of making me wonder what in the world are they teaching this girl.

I thought Saturday was the Sabbath. - My mom is a born again

and she will not do anything on Saturdays. She won't do anything on any days, actually, but on Saturdays, she *really* won't do anything.

She now is all in a tizzy that people think Sunday is the Sabbath. I told her she raised me and my siblings to believe Sunday was the Sabbath, and I don't get why now that's SUCH an atrocity. I really don't understand my mom. I think she's a very confused person.

I am always so surprised by people who do not know - sm

when the Sabbath is. It is Friday. Always has been. Always will be.

Not Friday DAY... - Feather Tuscadero

[ In Reply To ..]
Jewish Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday, lasting through dusk on Saturday. Technically that covers much more Saturday than Friday. All the Christian religions I'm aware of consider Saturday or Sunday the Sabbath. I'm aware of none who consider the day of Friday to be the Sabbath, now or ever. Not that your particular sect of whatever couldn't, of course. There are thousands of religions, all with their own rules. Of which do you speak?

Was this girl not taught honor thy mother and father? - She is the child not the parent!

I'm sorry but I was raised in a Catholic/Lutheran household and the only thing on Sunday was church, then after that was free time for lunch, playing, family, etc. Yes, Sunday is the Sabbath and church is important but my belief is that "resting" means no work on Sunday (like your job). That girl needs to be taught to respect her parents and not dictate if/when they go to a movie on a Sunday. If she don't like it, she can stay home (with a babysitter of course) and then miss out on fun.

Even God took a day off!

Hmm - Child is being taught...

So, you're wanting to punish the child for being taught wrong? Her parents are encouraging the proselytizing behavior, so I think your suggestion to punish the child by not being allowed to go out is a little twisted. In essence she IS honoring her parents. She's doing what she's told and is being praised for being high and mighty. I feel sorry for the kid and sorry for anyone who crosses her path when she gets older.

So, this child is going to be a royal pain in the butt by no fault of her own. The parents are not teaching her that people have different religious beliefs. They are teaching her that their religion is the be-all-end all and everyone else is bad. I'm assuming this is a Christian faith. Their behavior doesn't sound very Christian, but then Christians are the worst offenders of that one.

Perhaps this family has chosen Judaism, but I know a lot of Jewish people, and not a one of them has that religious high and mighty attitude that some of the Christian faiths do.

She's not Christian - OP

Well in a sense. They are Mormons.

There are "religions" that believe that the Sabbath is on Saturday - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
The Seventh Day Adventists believe the Sabbath is on Saturday and hold their services on Saturday. In the Jewish faith as well, the Sabbath begins on Friday evening and continues until Saturday evening. This is mainly based on the belief that when G*d created earth, that "the first day of the week" is actually what we now know as Sunday; hence, the Sabbath, or the "day of rest" would be observed on what we now know as Saturday.

Hi there,

I believe these articles about religion and faith should be entered onto the Faith Board, not at this site!

I'm not mad or anything, but I think you might think you are on a different board because I am on the faith board.

Mormonism and the Bible - Feather Tuscadero

[ In Reply To ..]
Mormonism isn't Christianity. So the teachings you grew up with via the Catholic and Lutheran churches aren't necessarily what this little girl is learning in a Mormon church.

The 8th Article of Faith from the Mormon Church states, "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly." This means that when the Bible contradicts Mormonism, the Bible isn't trustworthy. This allows them to say and teach whatever they want, even when it contradicts scripture. (copied from Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry)

Then you bring the Book of Mormon into play (of which I can make no commentary but it's easy enough to find an overview of)...who knows what she's learning.

My Dog Is Missing...Sep 19, 2011
We have an 8 y/o dog named Spike who never leaves our 3 acres. Ever. He just is a homebody. Lately, a red pit bull female has been coming up in our pasture to see him. Now, we haven't seen him since Saturday night. The pit bull is back at home, 2 doors down, and her owner says he hasn't seen Spikey.  We weren't home yesterday morning and our other neighbors said they heard gunshots at the pit bull's house.  I'm sure hoping he didn't shoot my baby ...

Missing KittenNov 20, 2009
Need advice.  My daughter's 7-month old kitten managed to knock loose a corner of a window screen yesterday morning and jumped out!  Needless to say, I was home alone, working in my office, so I figure she had about a 2-hour head start before I realized what had happened.  Been all over the neighborhood, have many neighbors on the lookout, but no luck yet.  We live in an area that has many potential kitty hiding spots (woods, etc.)  I'm at a loss and feel horri ...

I'm having a bad day.  I hate birthdays, just mean that I'm getting older.  The bloom is off the rose.  Glory days far behind me now.  Happy as a mom, though. My cat has been gone for three days and I'm not having a good feeling about his return.  Don't know how to tell my 10yo of Pete's possible demise. Then, a simple cheese cracker breaks my tooth -- nice.  Just gets better and better. I sort of feel like working to take my mind of ...

My Cat Is Missing; I Could Use Some Good Thoughts/prayersFeb 09, 2010
I could use some positive thoughts and advice, and since I work at home as an MT, and I'm antisocial (by necessity, almost), you ladies and gents are the closest thing I have to friends and coworkers. My husband and I are in Chicago.    Since I was the dummy who let the cat slip out (I didn't even know she was gone until morning) it's been pretty unbea ...
