if you haven't been put off pork YET

"The virus does not pose any health risk to humans or other animals. The meat from PEDV-infected pigs is safe for people to eat, according to federal officials and livestock economists".

Statements like this absolutely floor me.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to hear from livestock economists regarding the safety of eating PEDV-infected pork, and I am very skeptical of safety rulings issued by federal officials.

Perhaps federal officials and livestock economists could weigh in on American corporate farming practices and how these practices degrade the health and safety of our livestock and our environment.

What a shame it takes months to discover stuff like this! - Truthhurts

I guess I'll be off eating pork for a while. It scares me to think that the officials are so casual about these things. In reading furhter, though, this virus kills the piglets within days of being infected. So...when this virus runs it's course, pork prices are sure to rise even higher.

I did find this link:

and here:

P.S. Why aren't these deaths reported by the farms and - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
why aren't they investigated more quickly?

Reading up on what happened in China in 2011, seems they had a vaccine that worked but the virus came back as a new variant. So, just like human viruses, this one will be hard to beat.

It would appear that only certain animal diseases that affect our food supply are considered "regulatory."

It's no secret to the industry. Anyone caring about pigs - knew. Have some paranoia with your bacon?

Gee TH, guess I'm a bit skeptical of your sources. One thing I did find interesting in your link to the Pork Board. . .

"Through a legislative national Pork Checkoff, pork producers invest $0.40 for each $100 value of hogs sold."

A virus is a virus is a virus. Especially in a diarrheal virus the protocol to stopping the spread is stringent cleanliness. The conditions under which these poor creatures are raised and slaughtered are far from clean, sickeningly far . . .

what a shame addendum - Roseanne

Than again, on the other hand, I wonder if we won't see a glut of cheap pork if the producers actually try to dump these hogs off on a largely unsuspecting public :-(

Probably will because they'll want to get rid of the sick ones but - Truthhurts

after the virus has abated, they'll probably raise their prices as high as they think the people will or can afford to pay.

There will be "a shortage" of pork since the supply and demand rule will apply.

Thanks for the heads-up. But I'd stock up. Most animal - diseases REALLY cannot cross to humans.nm

Our meat industry is disgusting. - a vegetarian.

I can't handle the way animals are treated, just can't. I think it's barbaric.

I refuse to take the chance that I may support some nasty farm/slaughterhouse that treats their animals poorly.

Hormones, diseases, antibiotics, their food, their water--there are so many ways we defile our meat (and our bodies by extension).

but the political arm decided it doesn't want to lose those donations.

I emails all my reps, state and federal, about labeling. Got an answer today from one state rep and he said they can't make a law like that because it supersedes federal law. Nice. Won't vote for him again.

These politicians always seem to find a way around some law if they want it passed but find an excuse if they don't want to ruffle the feathers of some lobby group. .

agree with you about GMO labeling - nm

Phew, it has gotten really nasty on this board with each side acusing the other of insults and nastiness.  All I have to say is there are none so blind as those who will not see.  I also see a lot of ganging up and bullying.  Therefore, I am going to try to start keeping some sort of score.  At the very least, maybe it will encourage people to be more civil to one another.  Everyone should also understand that on most political forums there are people who drive by and po ...
