Wow - this board is getting hit

Posted: Feb 26, 2013

With condescending, snide remarks.

Here goes:  Someone is upset that someone wrote a poster did not get something, figures.  But ya'll are okay with:

"The positions you state have about as much intellectual integrity as jello" (to spell it out - you are stupid (i.e. no intellect))

Well, darn, that's a great story, but I can't ''like'' it because - I know you meant it as ridicule (The whole post ridiculing what the OP posted, yet not talking about what the OP posted).

Whenever someone posts an article about a subject or issue that is important to them, out comes the usual gang to make fun of her/him as if the article is not supposed to be spoken about.  Sure it's a big fat funny joke to some and then you go crying when your insults are deleted.

You guys are flinging the insults but you don't like it when someone says you don't get it??? (not a question - a statement)

Message for all posters on Political board

Posted By: Moderator on 2008-11-13

The topics on this board can be very inflammatory and sensitive. In general, you need to be able to control your emotions and develop a "thick skin" to get along on this board.

Please remember that the Politics board is for political issues/topics. Anything regarding faith, religion, God, atheism, etc., belongs on the Faith board and those topics will be removed.

We are not moderating the Politics board to make it a "nice" place to have "nice" discussions. We moderate it to ensure that as much opportunity to express views, discuss opinions, and debate topics exists. There will be heated exchanges sometimes. Respect and civility can be maintained even when debates occur. This means that you will have to moderate your own reading/responding at times. If a specific poster upsets you, don't read the post. Sometimes you will simply need to refrain from posting.

On occasion, there will be hit-and-run posters or trolls who try to upset you with their posts. Ignore those posts. The more you respond, the more you feed their need for attention. If there is foul language, hate speech, threats of violence or personal attacks, please use the REPORT THIS MESSAGE (at the top right corner of every message) feature available. Do not try to police the board yourself nor try to rally people to your support. Let us simply weed out the posts and posters, as necessary.

Second sticky:

Beware of Flaming!! Moderation is Kept Minimum on this board.

Posted By: Administration on 2008-08-27

Before you start reading/making posts on politics board:

- Beware of Flamed messages & Flamers here.

- Politics board is moderated on a less-stringent level to allow freedom to express opinions related to issues discussed.

As long as we realize that not everyone is going to agree and we shouldn't wear our feelings on our sleeves, a little more oversight on here would be good. What we do not want to see is overzealous moderators that ban every thread that may be controversial on politics board.

If it's lewd, pornographic, slanderous, blatantly mean spirited, then that's one thing. Otherwise, let people express his or her opinion and move on. If you don't like someone, just ignore that person. It's not rocket science, you know?

Use the Golden Rule if all fails. Trolls are going to come over here from other sites/forums to irritate us. Once they see that no one replies to their senseless posts, they'll stop. Again, ignore them. It's easy!

Please don't see this sticky message as a license to flame, but as a license to open discussion.

Ultimately an act of futility anyway. - anon

People are so entrenched in their own political dogma no one is going to be changing any minds with their rants. It is an echo chamber.

We are all too far apart now. I personally think the other side are a bunch of blind morons and so no longer find anything they might say credible. I won't say which side I am on, but I feel pretty confident we all feel that way. So really, what is the point.

I disagree and nothing can - Fanatical Hypocrite

change my mind;) No, seriously, I totally get where you're coming from. Many a time I look at the other guys and think "What is wrong with them?" Then I remember they're looking back at me and thinking the same thing. But despite those times where I look over and see only alien concepts disconnected from my reality, I believe very strongly that this country is better off with a mix of people. We've lost our ability to empathize with the other side as a whole, but I have to believe we can get it back.

As for this board specifically, I'll admit posters rarely actually change my opinion on a subject, but sometimes they change my facts. Someone from the other side will challenge what I say or believe and I have re-evaluate those beliefs. I have to go on a quest for facts and science. A while back during a big debate on assault rifles, some people made some very valid points about the potential efficacy of an assault weapon ban. For instance, pointing out the low number of actual deaths occurring from assault weapons. My opinion about the guns themselves didn't change. I see them as having no point in civilian life. I'm not trying to offend, only stating my view. So for me, even a few deaths from them seem pointless. It would be like if Hummel figurines occasionally exploded and killed their owners. Why would you want something that does nothing and kills a few people? But I now view any potential ban as having little effect, so I'm willing to compromise on it in order to find more efficient ways of cracking down on idiots with legal guns and anyone with illegal guns.

People on this board from the other side routinely challenge my views and ideals and so I begin to question them or through a search for evidence strengthen them.

Also, to address the original post. I don't care who insults me or how terribly. I was born in the internet generation and grew up playing games on the internet with teenagers. I was 14 the first time someone called me the N word. I'm white. I learned long ago the internet and its denizens (myself included) should not be trusted for external validation. While I personally love a heated debate, and often that leads to snarky insults (which I think should be allowed), I don't want to actually hurt anyone's feelings. Sometimes I forget that other people may take this stuff more seriously than I do or internalize some stupid thing I've said. In fact, I enjoy when someone uses a clever turn of phrase or takes a verbal joust at me.

"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." -Abraham Lincoln

Very good! Regarding Lincoln's quote, I DO like - and admire many conservatives I

[ In Reply To ..]
have a chance to know personally. I get to know the people they are to their friends, family, their own community. In these personal spheres, they often are among the best of people. Their commitment to those they care about, their loyalty, kindness and generosity are displayed again and again.

It's when discussion moves out to the rest of the world, a planet-ful of people who are not seen as their own or like them, that as a group--I feel--they may tend to be less admirable, less wise and more lacking in understanding, less kind, more callous, some of them even downright mean and potentially capable of supporting evil. Which is why I tend to avoid such discussions with people I want to continue to like.

Unfortunately, on this board all we know of each other is the latter, with no insight into how we behave at home to balance the picture. I often wonder if there might actually be a really great wife, mother or friend hidden behind some of the statements I find very much less than admirable on the screen.

"Posters rarely actually change my opinion on a subject, but sometimes - they change my facts." Agree! nm

I couldn't agree more. What I consider lively banter may be taken much more seriously by the face on the other side of the screen, and it's easy to lose sight of that. Hence the disclaimers, but I think even those have lost their efficacy.

gets the both of us in trouble a lot:) I originally only made this moniker to post a series of satirical jokes about Romney, then got caught up in the excellent debates.

How is my whole post "ridiculing" anybody? - the well, darn poster

[ In Reply To ..]
I wasn't quite sure at first what angle that post was coming from until I did a Ctrl + F of the board and found one of their earlier posts, so I let it be known for others who might not know or were confused about its intention, like myself (speaking of "snide," the wording of the actual subject line clued me in to something seeming amiss). And wanting to give a cookie to James Carter and the photographer is totally germane to and "talking about what the OP posted."

I'm often amazed at the selective reading skills exhibited by some on this board. If the Moderator wants to delete what I just said as an "insult," then so be it, but I'm feeling insulted by the above post since it is not at all truthful or close to what my post intended, yet I won't run off to report it.

All I was saying was this - OP of the post

[ In Reply To ..]
I read down through the board and see messages that people are going to report messages to the Moderator, and yet I see that side flinging the insults as much. I just happened to list a couple of the posts that were insulting to others. I do find it funny that the people who insult others don't think it's insulting at all to try to humiliate another poster by trying to make it look as though their worries are all in their mind and "ooh everyone be afraid" or "tin foil hat alert". Instead of addressing an issue that a poster brings up instead they try and belittle and ridicule and then report every little thing. Not saying you, because I don't know who you are. Those are observations that if anyone new to this board was to start reading that is what they would see.

I particularly don't care if anyone insults me. I've got a thick skin and I can dish out as much of the same thing as I get. Coming from a military background you learn to let things roll off your skin. Drill Sergeants kind of do that to you LOL.

All I was saying was the board is getting over run with ridicule. Most of the time my eyes roll over it, but when I see "Im going to report you to the moderator" and yet the people on their same side are also flinging dirt it just takes away from the true intent of the board.

But, such is life.

I don't see how any of that pertains to my post... - well, darn

[ In Reply To ..]
which you accused of being ridiculing when it wasn't, nor was it insulting, but you held it up as one of your examples of this overriding problem you perceive. You might want to consider whether you yourself are really part of the problem or part of the solution.
Please, try not to get so upset over this stuff. - There is so much more SM
[ In Reply To ..]
to worry about or get upset about? This is just a little forum. Don't worry about what others might post about your posts. Such is life on a message board. If you want to be upset, be upset with the offshoring of many jobs that is destroying our country. Take that personally. We all should.
LOL, I'm not "so upset" over this, just sick to death of the hypocrisy - well, darn
[ In Reply To ..]
and double-standards. I noticed there weren't any examples of insulting posts from the RW posters in the above, and there are some doozies on here right now, especially Truthhurts' accusations towards one of doe's posts, so why wasn't that mentioned?

Oh, and not to worry about where I'm placing my "so upset" energy. I am indeed upset over offshoring, but not "so upset" anymore because I don't think there's really much to be done about it at this point. Anything would probably be too little, too late, unless by some miracle, legislation about privacy/HIPAA that prevented offshoring actually happened, e.g. But I do still think about it, and I posted the below on another board earlier tonight, for what it's worth.

I am so upset about VR pay rates, though; that's criminal and obscene, and the developers/marketers/CEOs/etc. who came up with this ludicrous halving of pay rates compared to straight transcription should be drawn and quartered (metaphorically speaking, of course, heh). That's actually a much bigger issue to me than offshoring in terms of how it's impacted my livelihood.

Ok, glad I made you laugh at least. :) - Agree with your responseNM

You wrote words of wisdom in your post "If you want to be upset, be upset with the offshoring of many jobs that is destroying our country".

This board is just a medium for people to vent their angers, likes/dislikes. I think a lot of people should just develop a thick skin and try and stick with issues.

Yes, you are correct, there is a lot to be upset about in politics. Including dwindling pay rates, fighting between both parties one side not working with the other side to resolve the issues/problems we every day Americans are facing. The rich getting richer. The middle income getting poorer, and the list goes on. Very rarely will someones opinion be changed regarding issues here.

Looking forward to more discussion about issues, and less of the I'm going to report you posts.

Thanks for your post.
I don't either - doe

accusations of ridicule are all the rage.

Actually, I was accusing her of using dishonest references, - not of stupidity, although certainly

[ In Reply To ..]
if (IF) a person actually believed her own propaganda it would definitely have an adverse effect on her understanding.

Given the flexibility displayed over multiple posts by our member here, though, I doubt there's any real commitment to most positions of the moment. Social scientists say this is characteristic of a certain type of conservative (specifically conservatives in far greater numbers than liberals) who's more interested in supporting her own side/scoring points against an opponent than in details of the issues at stake. They know what's right and wrong--and whatever the other side believes is always wrong.

Really, my original intention was simply to let her know why I didn't bother to read her posts any more and what she could do if she ever decided she wanted to change that. Like all of us I do come to read and comment on posts, after all.
