White House sends Iran deal warning to Senate. sm

In an effort to reassert control over the domestic political debate surrounding sensitive negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, the White House penned a letter Saturday night warning senators to hold back on legislation that would detract from the president’s ability to affect and approve a final agreement with Iran.

The sentence reads: "...president’s ability to affect and approve a final agreement with Iran."

In the sentence, the word "affect" (a-FECT) is used as a verb meaning an action.

The action would be "affect" (verb), while the end result would be "effect" (noun).

So that "rag," as you call it, is actually spot on with the use of "affect" exactly as it is written. :)

The sentence is talking about the president's ability to have some influence over the agreement. See the words in the first sentence that say: "In an effort to reassert control over the domestic political debate," which means "affect political debate."

the president's ability to affect foreign policy
the president's ability to affect opinion
the president's ability to affect the policy agenda
the president's ability to affect the agreement

versus

the president's ability to effect the agreement, meaning bring about or cause it to happen; achieve; accomplish

The sentence is discussing his ability to influence it versus achieve/bring it about.

At least that's what my dang college English professor drummed into my head.

Oh, heck, maybe it's a little bit of both. Regardless, I'm glad President Obama did what he did, and thanks for posting it. :)

... if some are having trouble admitting it's grammatically correct because they disagree with your political opinion?

Especially considering we're all pre-employment tested and QA-ed on this very subject, it makes me wonder.

I personally had no political opinion on this one, but watching this current "debate" become more about grammar than the issue lends credence to the single responder to my post below, who said: "People don't want to think, they want to fight."

When it gets to the point people are actually ganging up on a single commenter - pretending she's not grammatically correct, for things we're all tested on regularly, because of politics - um, yeah, it's time for me to go home lol

...not with the article, of course, but with the correct usage of the use of the word "affect."

I have the 2nd edition of this supposed "MT grammar bible" myself, not the third. However, Nuance says this issue is not addressed in the third edition in their link below, which also gives examples of the correct usage of "effect" and "affect."

Sorry this isn't political, but considering it's already up for discussion and affects most MT's QA testing, perhaps it will be of help.

Not sure if it still qualifies as I don't work for them, I work for a small localized company, but found their public link on net engine search for "ADHI BOS affect vs. effect" but it perhaps still does. Perhaps even AHDI reference could be considered proprietary info.

I would edit it but then I may be accused of hiding something!
