Social Security is a progressive entitlement program created by Republicans and Democrats working together. Those conservatives ideologically opposed have always tried to get rid of it, but voters wouldn't let them because it has always served its purpose of protecting us from the possibility of destitution when we're too old to work. To those of you who are single, receiving Social Security and Medicare, do these numbers seem too high to you? The amount taken out of my monthly social security check for Medicare is $140. The amount taken out monthly for Part B insurance is $73, and for drug plan is $21 (total of $94 a month). By October 2008, due to increases in domestic and foreign spending, the national debt had risen to $11.3 trillion, an increase of over 100% from the start of the year 2000 when the debt was $5.6 trillion.
