Do you have one? If so, which one? Monthly cost? Would appreciate recommendations. TIA

ADT Monitored - sm

Two way intercom with monitoring center. Heat/fire monitoring. I don't remember initial cost, but we pay $38/month with monitoring, free maintenance. We do have a landline (telephone thru cable company) but they offer wireless as well now (we've considered dropping landline). We chose not to have key fob because of history of stolen cars and stolen keys. We do have a remote that we give to people who house sit, and is nice to clip on my pocket when I'm here alone (very isolated).

We interviewed several companies. We are isolated so monitoring was essential, and the reason we have the intercom system.

Protection One here - for at least 20 years

Started out as Multimedia, then sold to AT&T and now Protection One.

Cost was around $400 for installation of first package. I've added a cell phone to it so I could drop my landline. We have keypads in the basement and one by the back door. Window alarms on windows near the ground. Password protected and has two key fobs.

Trust me it works. Someone tried to break into our detached garage and it called the police. They ran and then came back after the siren quit. What they didn't know was that the system resets itself. It went off again. We pulled into the drive and the siren was sounding. Cops pulled in right behind us. Never did find the culprit but he didn't get into the garage. The deputy said that she had answered the first call and cleared the area. She cleared it again while we watched.

Cost is $42 a month.

Ruger 9 mm. Works well! :-)

I installed motion-activated floodlights around - the perimeter of the house, and -sm

also in a tree next to where I park my car. Between the flood lights, and asking the city to repair the 2 broken street lights in front of my house, there haven't been any more car break-ins since then. Our yard isn't fenced, unfortunately (this place is rented), and the rear motion lights seem to have discouraged people from cutting through our yard. One rear-facing apartment here was broken into before the lights went up; but since then the ne'er-do-wells seem to be bypassing our place. The other deterrent is that I'm home 99% of the time, and I always investigate whenever I see or hear anything suspicious.

Another good deterrent for the entire neighborhood is to get people in your town connected online through "NextDoor". Now that we have NextDoor, the minute anyone sees anything suspicious, the description of the person and their location (and sometimes even a photo) is out instantly in real-time.

I use Vivint - sarahsandroid

Setup was free, if you don't count the 42 month contract, came with a key fob and I was even able to talk them into a third door sensor because I have three entries. It was $49.99, inclusive, when I signed up...oh...40 months ago. I think it's still the same now.
Here's a link that saves us both $50

ADT without monitoring - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
My house was pre-wired with an ADT alarm system that had an option for monitoring. I chose not to use the monitoring feature because of the cost, and because the alarm itself broadcasts externally loud enough to be heard for half a mile if any entrance is violated while the system is armed. The only drawback to not using monitoring is that ADT won't give you one of their nifty signs for your yard or stickers for your windows. A sign deters most criminals, and I think you can buy a generic one online (even if you have no security system in place).

Like another poster, I bought some battery-operated motion-activated floodlights at Walmart for about $20 each (size D batteries). They're easy to mount, really sensitive, and very bright!! The batteries last for a long time because the lights don't go off during daylight, and they turn off in 30 seconds if the motion stops. The perimeter of my house looks like an airport runway if anyone approaches! LOL I'm going to put a few of these on trees (like another poster) just for fun. :)

Does Anyone Have A Home Security SystemOct 07, 2013
We are looking at maybe getting a home security system.  Not that we have anything worth taking (except our lives), but we live in an area where more and more crime and home invasions are going on.  I heard my neighbor screaming for her life, she turned on the back light and there was someone getting ready to break into her house.  Police said more drug seekers are breaking into people's homes and in the paper crimes/particularly home invasions are on the rise.  So we we ...

Nonprofit Hospital Systems Belie Their Title, MakeAug 11, 2013
This article is from CBS News, one of many on the subject around the country. I thought it might be helpful to realize what's been happening. One of my accounts (I AM an MT/ME)  is officially a nonprofit that, while raking in big profits by providing luxury services to wealthy, and/or just well-insured patients  - and very ...

Social Security AgainJun 26, 2014
Ok, I found out last week that a friend of mine is collecting survivor benefits from 2 dead husbands at the same time.  Has anybody else heard of that?  I have a call in to social security to find out.  I am hoping that if that's the case I can start collecting on my late husband at 60 and then switch to my ex-husband's retirement when I'm 62 and keep working part time and collect from both of them.  It says you collect 50% of the ex-spouse's retirement be ...

WikiLeaks - The MSM And National SecurityJul 27, 2010
By Howard Kurtz Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 27, 2010; 10:03 AM Question of the day: Should the New York Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel have done it? Should they have collaborated with the organization known as WikiLeaks in publicizing 92,000 pages of secret documents about the war in Afghanistan? The White House wasted no time in denouncing the leaks as "irresponsible." The news organizations can argue, above all, that these documents provide vital information about ...

Are We Going To Keep Social Security Or Abandon It?Sep 22, 2012
Social Security is a progressive entitlement program created by Republicans and Democrats working together. Those conservatives ideologically opposed have always tried to get rid of it, but voters wouldn't let them because it has always served its purpose of protecting us from the possibility of destitution when we're too old to work.  Now their tactic of destroying it by delaying necessary adjustments has successfully brought Social Security to the point of failure. Like a home ...

Question About Soc. Security & MedicareDec 16, 2016
To those of you who are single, receiving Social Security and Medicare, do these numbers seem too high to you?  The amount taken out of my monthly social security check for Medicare is $140.  The amount taken out monthly for Part B insurance is $73, and for drug plan is $21 (total of $94 a month).  So each month $234 dollars are being taken out of my social security check to pay for health care.  Does this seem excessively high to you, or is this a normal-sounding amount? ...
