White House Considering Retalitory Strike for deaths in Libya

Posted: Oct 15, 2012

Isn't that wonderful that they're letting EVERYONE in the world, including the terrorists who did this, know that they may strike back a whole month later!!!!! Where's the surprise? Why now...the night before a presidential debate? Why are they still blaming the video?

Who was the idiot who blabbed? Bob Beckel states the CIA is the only group who may know they're planning these attacks.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House has put special operations strike forces on standby and moved drones into the skies above Africa, ready to strike militant targets from Libya to Mali - if investigators can find the al-Qaida-linked group responsible for the death of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya.

But officials say the administration, with weeks until the presidential election, is weighing whether the short-term payoff of exacting retribution on al-Qaida is worth the risk that such strikes could elevate the group's profile in the region, alienate governments the U.S. needs to fight it in the future and do little to slow the growing terror threat in North Africa.

Details on the administration's position and on its search for a possible target were provided by three current and one former administration official, as well as an analyst who was approached by the White House for help. All four spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the high-level debates publicly.

The dilemma shows the tension of the White House's need to demonstrate it is responding forcefully to al-Qaida, balanced against its long-term plans to develop relationships and trust with local governments and build a permanent U.S. counterterrorist network in the region.

Maybe they need to locate and confirm a target and - (not just any Muslims will do), coordinate with

a friendly government (permission IS needed), etc., etc., etc.

Time seems to always be needed for military actions. As you'll recall, it took us nearly a year--after President Bush's announcement of plans for a quick little war--to invade Iraq in retaliation for being attacked on 9/11 by Saudi Arabian citizens working out of Afghanistan.

As for the election possibly being a factor in the timing, as a good liberal I have to say, yes, that could be, could also have nothing to do with it, but maybe. Of course, either way, if anything goes wrong... Remember One-Term Carter's misadventure in Iran?

I think it is old news. Didn't Obama say we were going to come after them - sm

I think it was at the Obama/Romney debate he said right up front that "we will get them" (just like bid Laden).

He has a lot more reason to say that than the vague "Orange" danger warnings that we would get right before the elections in the Bush/Cheney days.

Ummm, they can HEAR the drones. That would be their 1st clue, - NOT some press release.

Obviously, they are familiar with the sound, since Islamists come out into the streets and shoot at the sky whenever they hear the "big noise." IMO, that makes the alarm over the "announcement a night before the presidential debate" a bit on the pretentious side, since the element of "surprise" is drowned out by the drones themselves during their flyovers.

On the "why now?" question, my guess would be because the GOP has decided to try to make political hay out of the incident via premature speculation and committee hearings when clearly the details of the much needed intelligence remain unavailable during the course of the ongoing investigation. I think a GOP-style knee-jerk retaliatory strike is extremely ill-advised, given the other considerations articulated in the linked piece regarding the future cooperation needed in the war on terror....especially since the exact identities and requisite proof is not there yet, but if two steps forward and three steps back floats your boat, then the R&R choice is definitely your ticket.

Especially since they're supposedly positioned to hit an area - from "Libya to Mali." nm

I would guess that these well timed "leaks" are an attempt to repair the administration's image after the failure to protect the Libyan consultate.

Five weeks after the attack, this nut case decides to leak information? My question is and always has been, how can we send $$$ to these people by the millions/billions and yet not afford or provide adequate security to Americans in our embassies over in foreign countries? This is an OBAMAnation (abdomination). And Hillary taking responsibility suddenly. Sounds like that is for the benefit of tonight's debate - a little TOO coincidental.

Gun Deaths In US Projected To Top Auto DeathsDec 24, 2012
Guns and cars have long been among the leading causes of non-medical deaths in the U.S. By 2015, firearm fatalities will probably exceed traffic fatalities for the first time, based on data compiled by Bloomberg.   While motor-vehicle deaths dropped 22 percent from 2005 to 2010, gun fatalities are rising again after a low point in 2000, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Shooting deaths in 2015 will probably rise to almost 33,000, and those rel ...
