We've gone to war repeatedly in the middle east since, and each time have repeated the same stupid mistakes. We go in, we tear it apart, we fight the war from the ground instead of the air, get hundreds of US soldiers killed, and then pull out before the job is done.
It's like cutting into a metastatic cancer and leaving it in situ, rather than removing it. The cancer isn't killed by the cutting; instead it spreads all over the place.
