Unions

What is your opinion of unions today?  Are they still necessary to protect the rights of the worker or have they become too politicized?  If you think they are still necessary, why?  If you think they are too politicized, how can we change that?

I think unions started out as being a great thing. - sm

They protected workers and gave them better working conditions and better pay. Now it is politicized. They encourage workers to vote merely for 1 party. My father worked for GM for 35 years...before government took it over...and he always had to pay his union dues and when it came time to vote....the union always somehow decided to do what most of the workers didn't vote for. The union dues were supposed to be used for employees and yet all that money went to big union bosses and it turned into a total corrupt system that bullies workers into voting for one political party.

A prime example of the bullying is the SEIU thugs who beat a black man merely because he didn't hold the same political view as they did.

Unions are too politicized today. When I belonged to the Teamsters, - Backwards Typist

they fought for us. They never told us how to vote. That was our private choice.

When we women found out the men were getting $.25/hour more than us for doing the same job, they got us equal pay plus back pay.

Unions are still necessary because of the business practices of today, but they should be restricted to helping the workers, not telling their members who to vote for. BTW, my DIL was told to vote for Obama. Don't know if she did or not.

This is something only the government can do, and you know how much the government hates unions (saying sarcastically).

For decades, union negotiators have steered dollars toward such things as political campaigns and generous pay and benefit packages, rather than responsibly funding retiree pension obligations.  Now, with pension obligations climbing and fund assets dwindling, union executives realize that they can’t satisfy the years of promises that they irresponsibly made.  Their solution?  Dump union benefit obligations onto taxpayers.  That way, union leaders could continue to fig ...

From The Atlantic: "Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker doesn't like unions, and unions don't like him. But the most remarkable thing about Walker's relationship to labor isn't that he thinks unions are worthless -- most Republicans agree -- but that he thinks about them, at all. Today, unions have been swept into dusty corners of the U.S. workforce, such as Las Vegas casino cleaners and New York City hotel staff. For much of the 20th century, things were different. A ...
