Cheerleaders suing for

I am putting this on the politics board because invariably someone will object to talking about corporations being money grubbing evil entities and say it is political and it will be changed and all the comments will be missing or something.

So, yeah, I am putting this on the politics board because I think it is a sign of the times that wage theft is happening even to the somewhat glamorous job of professional cheerleader (is it a coincidence that they are all women?).

I see a lot of parallels with MTs, strangely, in this situation. They are IC though, and that is one of their issues - that they have to be at the beck and call and their contract encompasses so many things they can be requested to do. They appear to make even less than we do per hour! At least we don't have to pass a jiggle test (I'd fail), and at least cheerleaders can't be offshored, I don't think, anyways.

Seriously, though, so depressing that these rich corporations (or in this case NFL team corporations) are so relentless in squeezing out every last cent they can. Why do they do it, just because they can? And why are they all following suit, is there no team that doesn't do the dirty on their cheerleaders?

This is taking greed to ridiculous levels and it seems like the only end game is more for the top and hoping nobody notices you are screwing the little guy, and if they do who cares?

As women in a job which has also undergone wage theft to a huge degree, I wonder if there is anyone who could defend this and do you agree it is a sign of the times (rich and powerful taking income from poor people and not having to care, also seemingly writing laws that enable them to do whatever they want) that the corporations/the NFL teams can get away with this kind of thing?

Our free market economy allows them to treat us how they want until we go somewhere else because the only objective is profit. Very few (probably could count on one hand) want to run a corporation where people are happy and fulfilled. We (and possibly the cheerleaders) have our jobs redefined at will (VR conversion), are paid less than half or so of our regular rate so the company can charge less for VR and make the doctors happy (while we take the hit - who wants to bet the trans companies have the same profit margin on VR as they do on reg trans), so the ONLY beneficiaries are the clients, and the trans companies lose nothing except employees, about which they care nothing because there are hundreds if not thousands of MTs looking for jobs at any given moment - probably tens of thousands if you count India.

I agree with you entirely. Too bad we don't have an organized group or lobby on our side. With a quick search, I found Nuance has at several lobbyists pressuring lawmakers over the last few years: Robert Bradner, Lisa Barkovic, Michael Gaba, John Buscher, Julie Minerva, and Gary Sikorski - this is all public information found on the web. I'll bet they weren't lobbying on behalf of our interests.

A Dallas Cowboys cheerleader hopeful knows going into tryouts that she will make $50 per game (i think that's the rate), and is required to attend practices 3x week, etc. Most of them hold full-time jobs and/or still live at home because it's not a livable job. It's a ridiculous amount of pay for the time they put into the job each week. But every year the Cowboys organization has 600 women show up begging to agree to these terms. And if they don't, somebody else will. The most conniving word: "EXPOSURE." What you don't make in money, you'll make in exposure.

As a freelance writer I've had people try to hire me for zero pay, "but your work will be seen by other people who might hire you...you'll get exposure." I promptly decline these *jobs.*

My husband is a graphic designer and he still gets those *offers* even after 20 years of experience. And the problem is that there are newbies who are so desperate for work that they agree to work for nothing, or next to nothing, because someone older and higher up has told them that's the way it is. Paying your dues, volunteering, whatever you call it, it's still working for free.
You wouldn't ask a plumber to do that, or an accountant, or a landscaper. "I'll tell all my friends you did my taxes" is not pay for a CPA.

So when it comes to MT...too many of us have stayed too long in jobs that screwed us WITH OUR PERMISSION. I used to make a great wage with a national, then it started outsourcing and work dropped, then it got sold and the system changed and work dropped more, pay schematics became uninterpretable...SO I LEFT. I also turned down an in-house position with a giant practice because they offered me $7/hour less than what I asked for, which was both reasonable and commensurate with my experience. I walked. I did not let them devalue me or what I was bringing to the table.

In the job I have now, I got what I asked for because I justified it at my interview. And a year later I asked for a raise and was able to justify it. And this year I got another one because I have made myself indispensable.

Meanwhile, former coworkers at my old national have been sold and transferred multiple times, and they are still complaining of ridiculous standards and declining pay and low work, etc. They are letting themselves be treated this way.
There's no law against undervaluing someone. It's up to you to say no way.

Sorry but in a capitalist society its supply - and demand, but !

but! short of some type of revolt/boycott of the job (not likely) I hope they ARE successful in the courts.

We've been trained in this country to NOT rock the boat. And that is EXACTLY what the power base wants.

It's pretty clear from your post that *you* might need a history lesson.

CAPITALISM is not required for a free society - but it DOES create a total imbalance between the haves and have nots. What is SO SAD is that ao many of the have nots don't even realize how this system is stacked AGAINST them.

What would you suggest we - replace it with?

I don't suggest we replace it, per se, because that is not likely to EVER happen.

I think what is happening is enough people are figure out how the system 'works' and are forcing some changes via legislation.

That may be the best we can do. Since CONGRESS saw fit to give corporations similar power as INDIVUALS starting in the late 1800's, it's kind of hard to UN-ring that bell.

We can, however, demand representation, and to use our rights as citizens if we are NOT represented in Congress.

They volunteer to do this - nobody forces them. So sick of these kind of ridiculous lawsuits. You're supposed to be at a game to watch football, not the cheerleaders.
