The rugged spirit of American Individualism or

Posted: Aug 31, 2011

Eric Cantor and the Republicans want offsetting Federal budget cutbacks if we help the people affected by Hurricane Irene.  Ron Paul has said he thinks FEMA should be desolved.  Apparently, this is another hostage-taking opportunity for the GOP.

On the other hand, we have off-shored jobs so corporations can be more profitable, gone to war to protect Big Oil interests, bailed out the banks over their own mortgage crisis, bailed out Wall Street, and directed government money to big insurance and pharmaceutical companies through our health care policy.  But, it seems like we are out of luck if we are unemployed or have a serious health problem.  Do we now have to, as individuals, deal with environmental catastrophes?

but the government will continue to take control of the REAL issues - like what kind of light bulbs we are allowed to buy or whether McDonald's should be allowed to include toys or french fries in their Happy Meals.

I heard (just heard, so don't have a link to exact quotes or anything) that the federal government was going to funnel money that had originally been allocated to help Joplin, MO, recover from the tornado (recently drove through that area and saw the devastation personally) to the east coast recovery from Hurricane Irene. That doesn't seem right, either.

FEMA has a history of missteps, though. Don't forget the Katrina debit cards that were used at strip clubs and to buy Louis Vuitton handbags...

http://www.snopes.com/katrina/charity/debitcard.asp

Or the formaldehyde-laced FEMA trailers.

The agency needs an overhaul at the very least, and maybe just dismantling it and starting over with something more efficient isn't such a bad idea.

One more thing... - hmmm

as a Native American woman (Chickasaw/Caddo), I can emphatically state that my ancestors were a heck of a lot better off before the US Government started "helping them." Removal, exposure to pathogenic agents, etc., etc.

The more the gov't stays out of my life, the happier I'll be.

Over 400 treaties were signed by native nations and the Federal Government, and in two crucial decisions, Cherokee Nation v. Hitchcock (1902) and Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock (1903), the Supreme Court held that Congress has the power to modify or terminate Native American treaties without the Native Americans' consent.

I still don't understand why so many Indians are liberals and want so much government involvement in their lives...the track record with our people hasn't been all that great.

Because it keeps the money rolling in. - It's kind of like how welfare

really doesn't help people out of their situation, but more often gives them just enough to keep them poor. Then, they vote Democrat to keep the money coming, as paltry as it is.

Hey VTMT, are you okay? - Please check in! nm

I Took In A Little Male Dog. He's A Small Dog With Tons Of Energy And Spirit.Jan 03, 2012
Here's my problem.  He is the worst dog ever!  He knocks over the trash cans and gets into the trash, he hikes his leg on everything from my bed, to my couch, to who knows what.  He hates my cat.  He barks at every thing.  And to top it all off, he has become very attached to my daughter to the point that he wants to sleep with her which is an absolute no.  However, he manages to slip into her room at night and when I try to remove him from the bed, he becomes ...

"No Fair Wage For American Workers." Most American JobsDec 12, 2012
the people who hold them are getting wage cuts instead of increases. We're ALL in trouble. From the Washington Post: "The stagnation of wages has become an accepted fact across the political spectrum; conservative columnists such as Michael Gerson and David Brooks have acknowledged that workers’ incomes seem to be stuck." "Defenders of right-to-work laws argue that they improve a state’s economy by creating more jobs. But an exhaustive study by economist Lo ...

Is Your Manicurists American?Feb 05, 2010
For those of you that have your nails done at a salon, Is your manicurists American? All the salons in my area & surrounding areas seem to be Korean. The Next American Idol?May 03, 2012
I know, I know. It can be a bit lame but I've been watching it for years. Who do you think will win this year? I originally thought it would definitely be Jessica Sanchez, now I'm not so sure. That Joshua can certainly sing, although he wasn't my favorite at first, but he has grown on me. Holly has also stepped it up a few notches. Guess it's up to the voters now. ...

One American Dead Jan 18, 2013
Another international crisis . . . terrorists at it again: Fox News has confirmed that one American has died in the hostage standoff at an Algerian gas complex. Officials told the Associated Press the deceased American is Texas resident, Frederick Buttaccio. It is unclear how he died. Earlier Friday, the State Department confirmed there are still American hostages being held by an Al Qaeda-linked group at the gas plant, deep in the Saharan desert. When asked about a report that the grou ...

Why We Are Not Having An American RevolutionJan 24, 2014
Robert Reich's status. January 19 People ask me all the time why we don't have a revolution in America, or at least a major wave of reform similar to that of the Progressive Era or the New Deal or the Great Society -- given that middle incomes are sinking, the ranks of the poor are swelling, and almost all the economic gains are going to the top. The answer is complex, but three reasons stand out: (1) The working class is paralyzed with fear it will lose the jobs and w ...

American Jobs Act--FactsSep 12, 2011
There are some here who need to provide some facts instead of rhetoric. Here is the source "straight from the horses mouth." This is to be presented to Congress today. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/09/08/fact-sheet-american-jobs-act Many of the proposals will favor the retention of jobs in the United States rather than the offshore outsourcing. What BP Isn't Telling You: Not Just An American Problem.Jun 21, 2010
By Jes Alexander on June 21, 2010 WASHINGTON, DC (Herald de Paris) - So much of the handling of this BP Oil Disaster (a name for this mess we are advocating as it does not downgrade the situation, since IT’S NOT A SPILL) has been left to BP, out of the hands of the international science community and away from US federal agencies, I thought I might remind you all of what might happen if this hemorrhaging of crude oil is allowed to continue much longer:  Think Gulf Stream. American's Pleas For Help In Sudan Ignored. Aug 18, 2016
Hillary Clinton will follow suit. Here’s a recent snapshot of just how depraved things have become (as if we need more examples). The AP recently reported on a four-hour rampage of violence directed against Americans (and others) in South Sudan when Sudanese troops attacked a residential compound last month. The soldier pointed his AK-47 at the female aid worker and gave her a choice. “Either you have sex with me, or we make every man here rape you and then we shoot you in the head,†...
