Importing professionals from India for workforce

Posted: Nov 1, 2012

I was listening to a Chamber of Commerce guy talking about business last night.  He was saying he would like to infuse more talent from India into our state (by bringing Indian workers here).  He was talking about professionals, not factory and industrial workers).  Okay.  Maybe it is time to address the question, what do the Indian workers bring here that we do not have?  I understand the outsourcing being cheap labor, but why are there so many Indian doctors, etc. here?

I think it's because U.S. medical schools aren't graduating enough docs. - me

Especially in certain specialties. I remember reading somewhere that the AMA purposely keeps the number of graduates low each year in order to keep income high. I don't know if that's true or not.

I think you are correct about that - Admission criteria

I worked in a teaching facility for nurses--BS, MS, NP. There were always about double the number of students applying to the slots available. The competition was crazy. Admission files were kept under lock and key because it was not unheard of for students to try "adjust" their files. You could always feel the tension at all levels on day the acceptance announcements were made. Crazy.

Doctors come here to work because the health care system in India is horrible. The working and living conditions are far superior in the US.

Not just docs, but I suppose it holds true for engineers, etc. - sm

We have capable people here. I think it is the high cost of higher education.

Unbalanced Trade With India?Nov 06, 2010
Is India going to be the 'new China'? It sounds like it with all the CEOs wanting to do business there with low labor costs. I'm thinking outsoursing MT work was just the beginning and we can yell all we want about it but our voices will be ignored. Although the headline states 'both sides hope to expand ties', with the low pay in India, how will they ever be able to afford American goods? I think this will turn out to be another one-sided deal, with the U.S. losing agai ...
