Spread Your Legs for Uncle Sam: Koch brothers pay for

Little "funny" detail? The guy they hired to run this campaign for them -- supposedly AGAINST government probing our bodies -- is the same special-interest-group guy in charge of getting forced ultrasound bills passed in Virginia by Governor Ultrasound and several other states.]

Spread Your Legs for Uncle Sam

The real meaning of the creepy new anti-Obamacare ads

For all of the political fighting in Washington over defunding the Affordable Care Act, a pair of jarring new anti-Obamacare ads shows that some leading opponents have shifted their focus to sabotaging the law once it’s in place.

The spots feature a creepy, clownish Uncle Sam character performing gynecological and prostate exams on patients who signed up for insurance under the ACA. “Don’t let the government play doctor. Opt out of Obamacare,” the ads tell viewers. Not surprisingly, they’ve gone viral.

The canny bit of marketing is part of a reported $750,000 campaign by Generation Opportunity, an anti-Obamacare group backed by the billionaire conservative donors Charles and David Koch, to convince young adults that their best option is to remain uninsured once the health care law kicks in next year.

What’s most notable about the ads – besides the unfortunately positioned patriotic symbol – is who they target. Young adults are crucial to the ACA’s success. The law’s state-based health insurance marketplaces, called exchanges, will keep premiums affordable only if enough young, healthy people sign up for coverage to offset the cost of insuring older and sicker enrollees. The White House has said the exchanges will need to enroll 2.7 million healthy 18-25-year-olds to remain solvent.

According to Yahoo! News, Generation Opportunity is planning a series of campaigns on college campuses, replete with a game that includes a “Wheel of Misery” and “informative palm cards,” as a counter-effort to groups working to enroll young people in the exchanges. Generation Opportunity’sstaff is packed with conservative recent college graduates and some more experienced political hands, including a failed 2012 congressional candidate from Pennsylvania and a former vice president of Americans United for Life.

Some young people could spend less by paying a penalty for not having insurance under Obamacare than what it will cost to buy coverage. But new federal subsidies will dramatically cut the cost of coverage for individuals earning up to about $44,000 per year and low-cost, high-deductible plans often favored by the young and healthy will be available to those under 30. Older Americans, by contrast, will need more comprehensive coverage to avoid paying federal fines for not having insurance.

Persuading younger, generally healthy people that they don’t need insurance is an acknowledgment by conservatives that their only true hope of sinking Obamacare is to try and make it function poorly. House Republicans are poised to pass a stopgap spending measure this week that will tie funds to keep the government running to a measure that would defund Obamacare. With the Senate under Democratic control, the effort amounts to little more than political theater. Campaigns like Generation Opportunity’s represent the real new front in the fight over Obamacare: persuading young people to opt in or out.

[NOT so funny detail? Treating cervical cancer runs anywhere from about $3800 to $45,000, depending on severity, and of course women without insurance would tend to end up with more severe, more life-threatening cancer before they went to see a doctor.

How do YOU define evil?]

;

I definitely don't want Uncle Sammy all up in my business. - I guess you don't mind. (sm)

That ad really creeped me out.

I'm doing reports right now on a 23-year-old - dying of metastatic melanoma. Sm

You know what happened when she was diagnosed and was referred to an oncologist, right? First round of questions, do you have insurance? Do you have other means of payment? Then, it's, well, come back after you:

1. Sell your house for enough to pay for treatment.
2. Family sells or refinances theirs for enough to pay for treatment.
3. Apply to various agencies for assistance and (if) are accepted by one.
4. Stand up in church, beg for charity, and receive at least enough to satisfy the initial requirements to begin treatment. And be prepared to come back and beg for more, and more, and more.

These ads tell people they should go UN-insured. So, how DO you define evil?

Great post!! I also think taking food from the mouths - Libby

[ In Reply To ..]
of children and elderly people falls into the "evil" category.

These are just greedy, evil politicians, most of whom claim to be "Christian," and of course, those of us (as well as atheists with good hearts) who act more "Christian" than any of the Repubicans who claim to hold the exclusive keys to heaven. The low-information voters who believe the Republicans are also more than likely taking food from their own mouths and voting for other republicans who ARE against their own interests is really, really a sad commentary of the level (or lack of) of low-information voters we currently have.

Civilians worshipping Republicans is bad enough, but when those Republicans claiming to be worthy of worship themselves are ignorant regarding the laws, Constitution, etc.

all up in your business? - that's sad

[ In Reply To ..]
Certainly you realize that prostate and gynecologic exams on young adults are consistent with the standard of care. How does obtaining such an exam have a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g whatsoever to do with the government being all up in your business?

Generation Opportunity is hoping that ignorant, ill-informed people are going to be influenced by retrograde, Dark Age notions. They are promulgating the idea that gyn exams are not normal, are not performed by EVERY gyn physician on the planet, and that to submit to one is to spread your legs for Uncle Sam. Evidently, the ad worked on you. It's sad.

I think the guy in charge got slapped with - bad reactions to "probe" in Virginia and

[ In Reply To ..]
decided to USE that reaction, turning it on the innocent.

Hopefully 10 classes a semester on every campus that sees this will use it as a tool for learning the how and why of this stuff.

let's hope young Americans are smarter than - their TP counterparts

[ In Reply To ..]
The "ads" are obscenely ignorant.

What gets me is the attempt to appeal to millennials - a group the TP has

[ In Reply To ..]
failed to connect with every bit as much as they did with Latinos, gays and blacks. The youth vote ran from the GOP ticket by a 2:3 margin (just like Latinos), while gays shunned them by 3:4 and blacks a whopping 94:100 tally. Judging by the insulting appeal to a lowest common denominator mindset, it appears they haven't made much progress with their problematic demographics dilemma.

Strong (not normal) social cons fall below average - in both intelligence and education, so

I imagine college students will prove a very poor market for these scummy ads--overall. If even 10% of those who would have gotten health insurance don't, though, that'd probably be a good payback.

Some people, many of whom can memorize answers very well and do math very well, tend to see the world in black and white and often choose loyalty over good sense--even when it hurts them.

Just look at some of our fellows here. Who needs healthcare reform MORE than MTs these days? Or the other low-ed types who found a home here? Costs of medical care were skyrocketing even before our incomes collapsed, and continued to skyrocket. If people don't fully realize that, it's because they stopped going to the doctor for things they used to. Like me.

"Low-ed types who found a home here" - Which posters are you referring to?
[ In Reply To ..]
Your subject line gave it away that all you were interested in was insulting a group of people, so please do tell, since your not afraid to call posters "low-ed types", just which posters are you talking about.
Oh, just for instance, those who don't know we have - a 3-part federal government?
[ In Reply To ..]
Those here who think the House just "defunded," repealed or somehow killed Obamacare? Those who don't know Obamacare can't be "defunded?"

Those here who don't know that Congress passes laws and the President is responsible for implementing them?

Those here who are totally clueless about the difference between mandatory and discretionary spending -- when it's is key to what they're so excited about?

Those who don't know that the Supreme Court decides whether laws passed by Congress are constitutional?

I could go on and on just thinking of posts here, never touching, just for instance economic issues raised here routinely, but surely that's more than enough to make the point, right?

You know, we ALL start at 0. We all get 12 years of public schooling.
Some learn all the above during that schooling. Some don't but learn it on their own as adults. Then, there are the others who never learn this mostly elementary school stuff--the ones "undereducated" refers to, and by this time of their lives that means self-undereducated.
