Just wondering what yall think
;
Wondering what you think we should do - regarding Syria.
[ In Reply To ..]
I take it you're not in favor of a strike?
How would you suggest we help the Syrian people?
give'em some more money - none
[ In Reply To ..]
we seem to have plenty to give to other-world countries...give them some more. Let's put it this way, if one of our states of the union had gassed another state in our union, do you really think Syria would be falling all over themselves trying to "help" those that were killed and injured here?? I think not.
No can do. Prez already sanctioned Syria govt - back in August 2011.
[ In Reply To ..]
That's not likely to change until someone takes out Butcher Al-Asssad. Meanwhile, the US is certainly not alone in sending humanitarian and various forms of material aid to his opposition.
for goodness sake - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
if one of our states gassed another, the United States would be the one to intervene - not another country. Moreover, if the United States were attacked by a foreign country, the combined forces of NATO would be brought to bear.
A truth that further underscores the dilemma - faced by Syrian civilians

who live under the tyranny of a one-party fascist system where the head of state represents only the dominant interests of a religious MINORITY of it's population (less than 16%). He was "elected" by single-party referendum, and his power is enforced by military brutality. Of its 250 seats, 167 are "reserved" for the Ba'ath Party.
I suggest we help our own people. We're not #1 - anymore, in case you haven't noticed. (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
thanks bozo. We're now second rate. Let the ones with more money help. Cruel? We can't help everybody.
The places where we are not #1 have nothing to do with our - military might. nm

Really. And who is #1? - we are not second rate

items I might add to my to-do list for a party the day before. Spray for worse mosquitoes, borrow chairs for last-minute RSVPs, warn Susan Helen's coming, etc. Such as
1. Recheck objectives based on newest data.
2. Get final U.N. report.
2. Consult Congress first.
3. Recheck new data against applicable international laws.
4. Finish logistic planning. Two-day strike or 1-day and exactly where?
5. Before or after celebrating MLK's "I have a dream" speech?
6. Before leaving for Sweden and Russia or while visiting? (POTUS struck Algeria while he was visiting South America.)
7. Wait for Britain's Parliament to vote on its planned action first?
At least this is Military Times' take from the outside, strikingly imostly political items. Since we've obviously been planning for possible action for a long time, they obviously consider the other 100,001 military items on the to-do list as checked off long ago.

Probably after UN inspectors report is done, security council passes - UK's Chapter 7 resolution and
[ In Reply To ..]
(which the US supports), and expansion of existing support from Western nations such as Israel, Germany, Italy, etc becomes more apparent. That will happen once the UN determines the planned actions are aligned with Chapter 7 provisions in the UN Charter.
Heck, the prez may even make a pass by Congress whose members have been advocating action for quite some time....that is, if they EVER come out of recess long enough to consider the issue. That means we'll have to wait until after Labor Day and Roshashanah is done to see if he can catch them during the meager 4 days the next votes are scheduled (week of 09/09) before Yom Kipper holiday.
BTW, please define "war." Call me crazy, but my concept of that involves boots on the ground, which I do not think we will ever see in Syria.

Even though last decade we were too often the bad sheriff who needed to be run out of town, the world still needs a means to stop the genocidal maniacs. The U.N. can provide international approval, but not the military might to take on a Syria.
It will be the US soldiers only in danger. Only us. - Megalomaniacal, blah, blah, - we have one.

particularly in the comparison between the two presidents, a statement with subzero credibility. Here are the stat estimates of the killing, maiming, captured, detained, tortured, internally displaced and new refugees who have fled the country entirely, with hundreds of foreign civilians, and thousands of women and children in each group...all at the hands of Assad:
Fatalities: 100,000-120,000. Half of those have been civilians. Conservative estimates may be revised once all the mass burial sites have been unearthed.
Missing: Another 30,000.
Horrific injuries: Too many to document under the current conditions from cluster bombs, scud missile attacks, suicide bombings, and the use of thermobaric and chemical weapons, police brutality during protests, etc. Then there is the torture:
Imprisoned: 10s of thousands of protesters and captured opposition. Torture modalities, carried out in one of 27 torture camps and in regular prisons, include severe, protracted beatings with batons and cables (often resulting in death), at times carried out while hanging by their wrists, rape of men, women and children, young and old alike, inflicting acid burns, genital amputations, pulling fingernails and teeth out with pliers, forcing detainees to drink their own blood and urine and to consume their own feces, making parents and children watch their the torture of their relatives, dousing with ice water alternating with boiling water while inducing electrical shock, burning and burying alive....just to name a few.
Refugees: 1.5-2.0 million fled the country. Another 4 million have been internally displaced.
Just the tip of the iceberg. If you think that was graphic, try Googling Syria carnage/fatalities/injuries/torture or plug in city names like Homs and Aleppo, and have a look-see for yourself, then get back to us and take up where you left off about how "we have one."

We won't even take it for a vote because of Russia.
Not today. They are waiting for reports from - inspectors in Syria.

So are members of British parliament. Beside that, the US and NATO allies have indicated a UN veto would not necessarily deter action.

Nobel Peace Prize CommitteeOct 21, 2009
According to a report from the Agence France Press agency this week President Obama did not win the confidence of a majority of the five member panel before being awarded the Nobel Committee's Peace Prize late last week. Even though the committee's secretary told the press on Friday that the committee's decision had been unanimous, it appears that the members of the committee have a different recollection of how the decision unfolded.
