Secret Plans

Posted: Jan 20, 2013

In this video, NY Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin is asked to keep quiet a proposal by Democrats to confiscate guns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryUbJfg4tAo&feature=player_embedded On his Facebook page, McLaughlin went ahead and released the list: “Here it is. This is the video where I was asked to keep the Democrat proposals for the NY SAFE Act away from the public. This list was given to me by a colleague and it is not confidential. This bill was an attack on the 2nd amendment and the Democrats clearly wanted to dismantle the work of the Founding Fathers. None of these amendments were included in the final bill thanks to us fighting back. I will not stand silent while these unpatriotic proposals are pathetically thrown at us a 11 o’clock at night: 1. Confiscation of “assault weapons” 2. Confiscation o ten round clips 3. Statewide database for ALL Guns 4. Continue to allow pistol permit holder’s information to be replaced to the public 5. Label semiautomatic shotguns with more than 5 rounds or pistol grips as “assault weapons” 6. Limit the number of rounds in a magazine to 5 and confiscation and forfeiture of banned magazines 7. Limit possession to no more than two (2) magazines 8. Limit purchase of guns to one gun per person per month 9. Require re-licensing of all pistol permit owners 10. Require renewal of all pistol permits every five years 11. State issued pistol permits 12. Micro-stamping of all guns in New York State 13. Require licensing of all gun ammo dealers 14. Mandatory locking of guns at home 15. Fee for licensing, registering weapons” http://www.therightscoop.com/ny-assemblyman-exposes-real-gun-control-confiscation-agenda-of-democrats/;

Ummm, the content of the video does not jibe with - McLaughlin's embellished FB claim

[ In Reply To ..]
that he was "asked to keep the Democrat proposals for the NY SAFE Act away from the PUBLIC." The word "public" is nowhere to be found in the audio and, in fact, the CONTEXT of the audio suggests something quite different, since the reason for "not sharing that list" of (ahem) REJECTED amendments was given as not wanting to "dampen the enthusiasm for compromise."

This strongly implies the democrats did their own amendment striking in the spirit of constructing a reasonable measure that held the potential for bipartisan appeal. In other words, sound judgment was exercised and applied by dems during the course of the SAFE Act's deliberations so as not to appear to be proposing regulatory over-reach. Conversely, this is in direct contrast with, for example, the US House GOP's penchant for deliberately sticking outlandish stuff in their "kill bill" proposals they know full well will obstruct progression of the legislative process.

Aside from that is the obvious apples to oranges comparison between state and federal initiatives this post suggests. I have not heard anything at all about "confiscation" of firearms or ammo, which would require grandfathering of the new laws (a proposal that would no doubt render them DOA), nor have I heard about restrictions of magazines smaller than 10 rounds. It is New York's prerogative to float such ideas, but it's important to differentiate between state and federal plans.

That said, I would also point out that if McLaughlin would embellish the claim about what he says he was asked to do, then it is not that much of a stretch to assume he is capable of embellishing the rhetoric used to describe the items in that list. Not too sure where the hyperbole is coming from, especially since we do not have the benefit of being able to compare his FB list of (again) REJECTED proposals with the one dems felt would impede bipartisan passage of the SAFE Act.

Another much-ado-about-nothing nonissue.

I agree that the assemblyman's interpretation of events does not jibe with the video. For the OP to elevate this to the status of "secret plans" is an unnecessary and unwarranted leap.

What the democrat assemblyman the YouTube video - only identified as "Joe" said was

"...and, by the way, I was recommended not to have that list shared, because it would really have the capacity to dampen the enthusiasm for compromise." I = Joe the dem (not McLaughlin) and the request not to share was evidently made by fellow dems during preliminary deliberations. I'd love to see the OP identify where and how in the video that translates into "I" meaning MR. MCLAUGHLIN being asked "not to share the list with the PUBLIC."

New Years Eve PlansDec 31, 2011
Anyone have New Year's Eve plans or traditions?  I personally find New Year's Eve depressing, especially since the news people love to re-hash the tragedies of the past year.  We're staying home tonight and I got some movies to watch.  Tomorrow we go to my mother's for the traditional pork and sauerkraut dinner.  (I don't know if that's traditional everywhere, but it is in SE Pennsylvania.)     ...

'Scuse me for any typos or double remarks if any. I am trying to type this as he speaks. He plans to veto earmarks (how can this happen-there is no line item veto), cut LIHEAP program, freeze federal employee wages for 2 years (didn't they already do that?), cut military spending as Gates wanted, will work with everyone to simplify the tax code, but it sounds like he doesn't want to change anything with SS. He wants to increase taxes for those earning over $200K. Then he wants to ...

Candidates' Deficit Plans Don't Add UpOct 01, 2012
As the government closes the books Sunday with a $1.1 trillion deficit for the year, which required borrowing 32 cents for every dollar it spent, budget analysts have little confidence in either presidential candidate's plan to address the accumulating debt, now at about $16 trillion. The Republican nominee promises to balance the budget in eight years to 10 years, but he also offers a mix of budgetary contradictions: higher Pentagon spending, restoring cuts that Democrats made in Medicare ...

The Web Of Soros And How He Plans To OverturnFeb 14, 2017
As is well publicized, a Seattle Federal judge has halted President Trump’ executive order pertaining to temporary travel restrictions. What is not more widely known is who is directly responsible for this halt. The MSM are hailing Judge James Robart’s temporary halt as a brave decision and a fight back against injustice. What the media are largely ignoring is that a judge only rules on a case, the case is brought by a plaintiff and the plaintiff is represented by a lawyer (or group of ...

Why None Of Those Budget Plans Make Any Difference At AllApr 08, 2011
We'll eventually get a budget put in there and you know what's going to happen? One or more of these: earthquake, volcanic erruption (Mt. None of our plans matter in the whole scheme of things. However, that bail-out of Texas makes me shake with anger. ...

Obama Gives Private Plans $6.7 In BonusesApr 21, 2011
Here we go again. Sorry, but doesn't he realize we're broke yet?   WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of seniors in popular private insurance plans offered through Medicare will be getting a reprieve from some of the most controversial cuts in President Barack Obama's health care law. CBO Now Says 10 Mil Will Lose Employer Health Plans Under ObamaCareJan 28, 2015
The Congressional Budget Office now says ObamaCare will push 10 million off employer-based coverage, a tenfold increase from its initial projection. The "keep your plan" lie just gets bigger and bigger. The latest CBO report is supposed to be a big win for the Obama administration because the projected costs are 20% below what the CBO first projected in 2010. But the CBO report also shows that ObamaCare will be far more disruptive to the employer-based insurance market, while being far less ef ...
