New Years Eve plans

Posted: Dec 31, 2011

Anyone have New Year's Eve plans or traditions?  I personally find New Year's Eve depressing, especially since the news people love to re-hash the tragedies of the past year.

We're staying home tonight and I got some movies to watch.  Tomorrow we go to my mother's for the traditional pork and sauerkraut dinner.  (I don't know if that's traditional everywhere, but it is in SE Pennsylvania.)

... so at the end of my shift, which is just before midnight, I'll raise my glass of iced tea and toast 2012. Tomorrow we'll have Hoppin' John with black-eyed peas. Then I suppose we'll take down the Christmas decorations.

Too exciting for words, isn't it? :)

better than mine, - sm

Work today till 5, then eat and go to bed, wake up for work from 3:30 till 10:30, sit and do nothing till Monday at 3:30 am.

All my live has become is work, sleep, sit here doing nothing. Have no friends, dont see family, and I am bored to pieces with my life. Happy flippin New Year.

No Friends Is A Choice - JC

[ In Reply To ..]
Hey, having no friends is a choice. Not being mean, but you need to get out and socialize. People need people. Don't sit in your "stuff."
where do you go to meet people - not a choice
[ In Reply To ..]
I go grocery shopping and for walks around the neighborhood. I occasionally talk to a neighbor, but where do you meet all of these friends? I was not popular in high school, and started working for home shortly after that. Now its been so many years of being at home.

I dont go to bars, and I have no idea where else I would go to meet people. I stay hi to folks when walking, but they dont just invite the heavy walker over for dinner, ya know.
You're right, it's not a choice - ILMT
[ In Reply To ..]
The "choice" was to work at home; social isolation is one of the occupational hazards of that choice.

It's not that easy to just go out and meet people. And even if there are opportunities to get involved in the local community, our work shifts often limit our ability to participate when the whole rest of the world, it seems, works 9-5 M-F and events are scheduled accordingly.

Sometimes, just saying "hi" to folks when out walking or doing occasional shopping is about it. At least you do get out and walk! I always intend to make that a habit, but don't stick with it. A goal for 2012, perhaps.
Friends - JC
[ In Reply To ..]
I've worked from home for 13 years, odd hours, and I have friends. You DO have to extend yourself, they don't just happen, and if you're standoffish, they're not going to be inviting you over.

I just smile and start a conversation with neighbors. If I think I like them, then I invite them over or ask if they'd like to go to lunch.

If you don't like your neighbors, join something where there are people who enjoy your own hobbies, whatever it is. Or mingle at some church functions or something. Sounds like you're single,so join a singles group that shares your values. You don't have to go out to bars.

Also, you don't have to work in an office to make friends. In fact, most of my best friends were never work buddies when I did work in an office.

Be friendly and outgoing in a genuine way.

If you're out in the boonies with nothing around you, that's a choice, too.

Really, I'm not being mean. I'm trying to help. That's a way too lonely life to lead and could put you in a depression, if you're not already.
volunteer - in various ways
[ In Reply To ..]
Church is a great way to meet like minded people - whatever church you choose. They usually have singles groups or ladies groups, etc.

Volunteer one afternoon a week at a hospital or a school library. Go to the shelter - they're always looking for an extra pair of hands if you can handle it. (Personally, can't do it. I want to take all the animals home.)

Your local zoo or museum if you're near enough to one usually always has volunteers as well.

Like the other poster said, you have to be a bit proactive. It's hard, I know, I really do.
Volunteering - JC
[ In Reply To ..]
Oh, thanks for mentioning volunteering. I used to volunteer at a nursing home reading short stories and writing letters for the elderly and it did me a world of good at a bad time in my life.

Doing something good for someone else can put you in a good place.
I volunteer at my son's school library. They - mthead

are glad to have the help, as I imagine any library would. I reshelve books and help the kids find what they need. I only do it once a week, but I really enjoy the work and the people contact.

What is Hoppin John? - Trampled underfoot

I know what black-eyed peas are, but I never heard of Hoppin John.

I'm postponing taking down my Christmas decorations. I hate that job. It will wait til at least mid-week or more likely next weekend.

It's a Southern tradition - my grandma always had them New Year's Day, and my mom sometimes too. I really like Hoppin' John - I should try making it again, but I've been trying to make sweet potato fries for a week now, and something always gets in the way!

I am interested in everything so I have books to read/study, DVDs - More

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a huge stack of books, some to read and enjoy, others for languages and other subjects that I'm studying just for fun. I have a stack of DVDs that are movies I want to watch, study DVDs on the same subjects as the books above. I have my regular Bible study. Friends and relatives are calling, but I don't have plans to go anywhere. I don't want to go out. I am just thankful for the time to get into these things that I love to do. Oh yes, and keeping up with politics too. I'm a person who is curious about everything. There is so much to learn and not enough time to do it.

Oh yes, and I plan to work out. Happy New Year Everyone!

work some puzzles and make BEP with ham - yumyum

[ In Reply To ..]
We will stay in tonight and work puzzles. I'll start the slow cooker tomorrow morning for black eye peas with a ham bone and then make cornbread when it is ready. I will take my kid to Chuck E Cheese so she can run around and get some wiggles out of her system and then call some friends and family and visit my mom.

We don't have any traditions, we do all different things, usually to friends' houses. I usually take NY's Day off, but I'm saving my PTO for another time---so, this year, just staying home and eating ready-made fun food, like jalapeno poppers, southwest egg rolls, things like that.

I live in Vegas, so........ - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There is an over-abundance of things to do. I normally go out and play with but buggies in the desert with friends and family, but the last few years I haven't been able to due to financial reasons :( Last year, I spent it with my grandkids and daughter in San Diego watching movies at their house :) This year, am going to get out and enjoy the nightlife - either going Downtown (free event) or to a local casino that is offering $10 wristbands for an open bar for three hours - or both! I have done The Strip once and NEVER will again! AAA and Tipsy Tow offer free rides home for you AND your car, so that is there if I or anyone else needs it. I have done so much for others for so long, putting myself way at the bottom, that I have decided 2012 is all about me!

Was in Vegas for the first time this past April - Trampled underfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm sure there is a wide choice of stuff to do there tonight! I never did so much walking in my life. My feet hurt SO BAD! But there was much we didn't even get around to seeing in the brief time we were there.

That's funny you should mention Tipsy Tow. I heard about it for the first time today and, while I think it's a wonderful idea, here in Pennsylvania, AAA is not offering it.

You need a week here at least - just to see... OP

[ In Reply To ..]
The Strip alone! I've lived here 8 years and haven't seen 1/3 of the properties down there LOL. If I go out, I go downtown to Fremont Street because you can walk casino to casino and people watching is a premium! And if you gamble, your odds are at least 30% better up there, drinks are cheap and it's really a lot more like Old Vegas.

I ended up going down to the Silverton Casino - off the Strip and had a good time. Great mixture of "locals" and no problems. The expressway was super light traffic at 1:30 - great way to do Vegas for the New Year I think :)

Here in Raleigh (NC) they have tons of stuff to do - for "First Night."

[ In Reply To ..]
Bands, parties, parades, acorn drop,(city symbol is oak tree) and this year a big Ferris wheel set up in the middle of town. And the weather looks like it will be clear and mild.

Unfortunately I am so old and tired now I probably will be in bed by 10 o'clock. On the bright side at least I won't wake up with a hangover! Happy New Year!

Looks like I'm going to be working, trying to - make up for all the NJA this week! sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm in San Francisco. My friends always want to go to The Embarcadero (the waterfront area) for fireworks and such, but every year it's the same old thing - after the stroke of midnight, the police come in their riot gear and chase everybody out. If you don't move fast enough, you get arrested. Add to that all the "practice" the riot police have been getting in beating protesters over in Oakland, and they'll likely be in top form citizen-injuring form. Nope. No thanks, I'll pass on that.

So excited about my NY plans! - AnaPhylaxis

My daughter and her fiance are coming over to ring in 2012 with us. We've ordered trays from the local Italian deli, a shrimp tray from another deli, other assorted finger foods, and, since we're all staying in, have rounded up all the ingredients for Espresso Martinis and Caramel Apple Martinis, while the guys enjoy Mojitos. We have a bottle of bubbly ready for midnight and just intend to have best NYE celebration ever (and for once, a holiday is falling on my regularly-scheduled day off!).

ETA to add, just for the fun of it, we're getting all dressed up as if we're attending a fancy NY party, decked out in our dressy clothes and dripping in our LS jewelry like we're the bells of the ball, LOL!

I hope 2012 brings the best to all of us and sees more work coming back to American soil.

Happy New Year, my fellow MTs!!!

Staying home and making a nice dinner with my husband. We love to cook and have no desire to go out to a restaurant tonight. It's usually crazy out there on New Year's Eve. We live in the city so if we do decide to venture out, we can either walk or take a cab. As usual, I probably won't be able to stay awake until midnight but I'll try! Happy New Year!

Eating Out NY Eve - CR

[ In Reply To ..]
I hate eating out in a restaurant NY Eve/Day. For one thing, the menus are usually limited. For another, the crowds.

We stayed home NY Eve and ate munchies for 2 hours. Didn't open a bubbly to ring in the New Year, I have to work today, NY Day.

planning to play word games all night ! :) - nm

Candidates' Deficit Plans Don't Add UpOct 01, 2012
