Please stop labeling/pidgeonholing other human beings as "libs" or "conservatives&quo

Posted: Feb 28, 2014

I don't care if you call yourself a liberal or republican, if you are stuffing another human being into a neat little box with a label stereotype, you're just as narrow-minded as any racist or bigot, fascist or socialist on the planet who disallowing other people to be different than themselves.

Don't you get it?

If you are buying into that media/political BS of blame gaming others from another party than yours, you really ARE sheep yourselves -  regardless of your party or what news channel you watch.

This is why we can't get anything done in Congress - fighting like children on a playground, arrogantly proclaiming "our side is right and factual, nanny nanny boo boo" and insisting things be done their way, rather than listening to one another, conceding to another's good point, compromising and actually rolling up their sleeves and working together to actually get something done.

The factss are, Republicans and Democrats/liberals and conservatives create balance in the house, they need each other to function, like a marriage.  When one gets way out on a limb and whackadoo, the other reins them in.

We can spend that political "marriage" tearing the other one down or working in partnership to build something, your choice.

Most importantly, regarding the subject matter below on terrorism - the greatest thing the terrorists ever did was shake our trust in each other and further polarize us from each other politically and a house divided against itself cannot stand.

So why are you helping them help out by creating more division?

Glad you got the gist, with my typos and all. (I don't proofread my comments and emails much, I do it too much already for a living;)

To me, throwing all individuals of one group into one stereotype box is just another way we've found to objectify and scapegoat other human beings, projecting our anger/hate issues onto them - it's just become socially acceptable to do so over politics, in recent years.

All this blaming wastes time and is a distraction from people that don't have a solution to the problem.

Congress, et al - it doesn't matter who's fault it is/was anymore - just stop fighting and work together to fix it, right?

I would love for this to happen, but - sm

I don't think it is a realistic expectation. Now don't get mad at me here, but I think a lot of people had hope when President Obama took office that things were going to change for the better, you know, hope and change. Well, it did happen, but not for the better. The racial divide is wider than ever, as is the divide between the two major parties. Passions run hot and deep because both sides feel so strongly about their point. That includes me. I don't trust this president anymore. I don't believe one thing that comes out of his mouth. He is wanting to have autocratic rule. Guilt by association comes to mind when I think of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, et al. Even a former fan of his, Jonathan Turley, a law professor, is totally against the president's autocratic tendencies and has spoken out about them. I wish it could be different, but I don't believe it can change until at least November when the Republicans win the majority in the senate and/or when we have a Republican president.

That's still no excuse to lump whole groups - together.

[ In Reply To ..]
I get your feelings about the president, but the animosity on this board seems to be against entire political parties. I think that's what the OP was talking about, not disliking particular people.

I don't get it then. What's the solution? Using a different name? - If so, what? (NM)

[ In Reply To ..]
NM
No, the solution is to admit that not all democrats - and republicans are the same.
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't understand how that is so difficult. Names don't matter. It's the blaming of entire groups that's the problem. There are good and bad in every political party. If people would consider that, they wouldn't make broad statements like "the libs need to wake up" or "the republicans hate minorities" or whatever.
Solution: Not assuming all individuals in a group are exactly alike - Research Further
[ In Reply To ..]
In a way you're right - it's actually normal to try to classify the world around us into groups - where we go wrong is assuming that ever individual member of a group, voluntarily or not, is exactly like all the other members and make assumptions based on that perception.

Like right now - I wonder if people are reading my post and trying to figure out which box I fit in politically lol.

The answer is, it depends on the issue - I'm an independent, I think for myself, and I'm mature enough to admit when my candidate screws up.

Let's face it - Bush had the Patriot Act, Obama "may" have known about the NSA and the IRS - both possibly threw away the constitution in favor of gaining the upper hand.

And that's what it's all about in politics - gaining power/control, regardless of party. Maybe some politicians started out with passionate beliefs, but by the time they reach the federal level especially, it's all about scratching backs to keep yourself on top.

Shame, really - what we have our consummate politicians as entertaining managers, not true leaders.
Yeah, that was "are" not "our" :) - Research Further

I simply meant that jumping to conclusions that all members of a particularly group are exactly alike and operating under those assumptions becomes problematic in that it can lead to stereotyping and scapegoating.

If you have any questions about specifically wasn't clear to you, I'll be glad to answer - that is, if you truly want to understand :)

You mean like the Tea Party and conservatives? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That we get labeled all the time with the group label? There are liberal posters here who assume that because we are conservative we all voted for Bush or McCain or Romney (which we did not) or that we didn't vote for Obama (which some of us did). Some do some don't. We are labeled with the group names too.

Maybe if you "research further" like your moniker states you would see that.

Also, it doesn't help your cause when one poster is badgering another poster because they have a different of opinions and all the liberals on the board jump on the band wagon to gang up too, so, excuse me, but it's a little hard not to group most liberals in one group. Especially when they are mostly saying the same things. Of course we know not every liberal or every conservatives have the same viewpoints. That is obvious, so I have no idea what your motive is for posting your demands. Maybe you should write out a list of what we are allowed to say on this board so we can all follow along and abide by your rules.

Must be Some Misunderstanding? - Research Further
[ In Reply To ..]
Wow. I have said repeatedly that I think the problem comes in between parties when people automatically assume individuals within a group are all the same just because they are members of a party or group, voluntarily or not.

So I'm completely at a loss to understand where you interpreted that to mean that I was labeling anyone or "making demands"?

I sincerely want to understand how you got this perception, so please copy and paste my words that have clearly been misinterpreted - because labeling others or "making demands" was not my intent.

The closet I came to that kind of assertiveness was strongly suggesting earlier that if we (and I included myself, there) want to be heard, we should lead by example and start listening?

Gridlock in Congress has less to do with childishness - and more to do with corruption

[ In Reply To ..]
You make great points in your post about people posting HERE (name-calling) but you compared it to Congress where egos are also in play, BUT more than that many congressmen and women are bought and paid for by those who got them into office and therefore THEY MUST bend to that corporate will or be ousted.

Sad to say but true. Not all Congress is corrupt but anyone who thinks WE THE PEOPLE are truly being represented is sadly mistaken.

Very True Too, Stated Much Better Than I Have :) - Research Further

[ In Reply To ..]
I kinda/sorta alluded to that with my comment regarding "back-scratching", but you've stated it much better and with much more clarity, thank you:)

I wonder if they feel obligated despite what they personally believe?

I do think it takes a special personality type to be in politics at that level at all, regardless of party.

But again, we can't throw the baby out with the bathwater and judge a whole group based on what a few elitists in power do, most of whom are completely out of touch which what it's like to be an everyday American.

In fact, I wish I could vote some everyday Americans I know, from either party, who are sincere in their beliefs and have the courage of their convictions. I commend their passion - but typically folks like that have an intact conscience and therefore would never make it to that level

My apologies to all, by the way - I haven't commented at this site in literally years and it's slightly different. Here I was scribbling these things out like post-it notes while multitasking, not realizing some were taking me so seriously and I was difficult to follow as a result.

I'll try to proofread myself more and be clearer from now on - if I have time :)

I couldn't care less about typos! - sm
