The Obama administration on Tuesday backed a proposal to spend up to $6 billion more on subsidies for electric vehicles, amid renewed interest on Capitol Hill in measures to cut petroleum consumption in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Okay...so more money being spent by the govt. We do not have the money to spend on this.
Some cons to the electric car:
Current batteries have relatively short trip capacity.
Recharge time can be hours, so you don't just stop at the station for a couple of minutes and continue on your way.
Batteries only survive so many recharges before they require replacement and they aren't cheap yet.
Batteries currently contain unfriendly chemicals that must be handled properly.
They tend to be much more expensive to buy and maintain.
Fewer places can service them (so far).
Our electric infrastructure would not handle the load if many thousands came into use soon: we have seen some problems with the electric loads we have already.
Generating the electricity, charging the batteries and converting the charge back into motion is very inefficient - each step has waste. Except where nuclear, solar, geothermal or hydroelectric supply is dominant, this may not be a big net plus environmentally.
Electic cars will lower demands for oil but increase demand in our elecrtical grid. The majority of our electricity is developed via fossil fuels.
Besides...who has the money to buy a new electric car? I sure as heck don't. They are expensive and the battery is not cheap either.
