Obama wants to spend $6 billion

Posted: Jun 25, 2010

The Obama administration on Tuesday backed a proposal to spend up to $6 billion more on subsidies for electric vehicles, amid renewed interest on Capitol Hill in measures to cut petroleum consumption in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Okay...so more money being spent by the govt.  We do not have the money to spend on this.

Some cons to the electric car:

Current batteries have relatively short trip capacity.
Recharge time can be hours, so you don't just stop at the station for a couple of minutes and continue on your way.
Batteries only survive so many recharges before they require replacement and they aren't cheap yet.
Batteries currently contain unfriendly chemicals that must be handled properly.
They tend to be much more expensive to buy and maintain.
Fewer places can service them (so far).
Our electric infrastructure would not handle the load if many thousands came into use soon: we have seen some problems with the electric loads we have already.
Generating the electricity, charging the batteries and converting the charge back into motion is very inefficient - each step has waste. Except where nuclear, solar, geothermal or hydroelectric supply is dominant, this may not be a big net plus environmentally.

Electic cars will lower demands for oil but increase demand in our elecrtical grid. The majority of our electricity is developed via fossil fuels.

Besides...who has the money to buy a new electric car?  I sure as heck don't.  They are expensive and the battery is not cheap either.

attitude of the government. Then weeks, if not months or years, to try to figure out the solution to that problem.

Another way to get the cap-and-trade passed?

On an aside, since the cap came off our electric service, our bill has gone up 30%. I now pay $4.21 a KWH. Companies have sent info to join their electric service with our present company still supplying all the services, including repair work (how does that work?). The best part of it is it's a 10% discount in our electric bill, but it's a year-to-year pricing. So, what happens after that? Probably the prices will go up.

Anyway, I don't believe electric cars are the way to go either. Who wants a lug around a trunk full of batteries? What happens if some rear-ends that car? Batteries contain acid. That would be an DEP/EPA problem then.

Locally, a coal baron has made a car that uses coal to power it WITHOUT the gases spewing into the atmosphere. He drove it all the way to Indiana and back to show it's capability. He applied for a grant but was refused. (Remember Biden doesn't want any coal used.)

I'm sure there are plenty of other people out there with inventions to solve this problem, but they are all ignored, too.

I feel so sorry for the kids and grandkids growing up today.

I just do not see how how electric cars - sm

are really going to help us out that much. We still use fossil fuels to provide electricity...so what is the difference than pulling into the gas station?

I personally feel that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles should be looked into since its emission is merely water vapor but the Obama administration has cut funding for this as it is pushing electric cars instead.

Not much into ethanol though. The very idea of using a food source to fuel our vehicles, IMO, is just stupid.

I agree about ethanol. I don't think it gives any better - Backwards Typist

mileage or curbs emissions.

Hydrogen is probably a very expensive alternative.

Fuel efficiency is the key for right now. Since the early '90s, we only bought vehicles with 30 mpg or more (well, with exception of the pickup truckm but that hopefully with go soon).
No big gas guzzlers for us, but we do like comfortable cars. We found it in the Olds (that they don't make anymore) and now Buicks with V6 engines. Don't need an itsy bitsy car to get good mileage.

Oh, I'm talkative today. Bored and ran out of work very early this morning. Sorry.

and so I pretty much have my pick of which vehicle I wanna drive. As far as good mileage...the HHRs are really good. They get 32 mpg and the Chevy Equinox gets 32 mpg as well.

I'm all about comfort as well and I've found that these cheaper vehicles with good gas mileage are crappy inside and not comfortable to ride in at all. Either that or they just lack room inside and you cannot take your kids and/or a lot of stuff because there just isn't the room.
I know I shouldn't like gas guzzlers but.... - sm

I drove a Hummer for about a month just for fun. OMG....super fun to drive that thing. Very comfortable, awesome sound system.....I had a lot of fun with that thing. ;)

the electric car is - quite viable

[ In Reply To ..]
I would urge all to see the documentary "who killed the electric car".

It's a stunning eye-opener documenting the corporate rush to kill this technology in favor of protecting the profits of big oil and GM.

The hydrogen cell is more than 40 years away in terms of being a viable fuel source for automobiles.

In contrast, a superior electric automobile battery has been developed, which has greater storage capacity and greater mileage per charge than its predecessors.

Sadly, but not surprisingly, the rights to this technology were swiftly purchased by GM -- and then sold to Texaco. It's off the market.

As long as corporations are permitted to squash technology to protect their profits, we will continue to remain in the energy and economic dark ages.

food grade if the economy keeps all of us poor.

I didn't know it wasn't food grade. What's the difference?

But you are still using fields that could - sm

be used for food grade for people and live stock. You know how much fuel we consume now. Imagine how many fields we will have to take over to make ethanol to keep us driving. It just is not a good idea in my opinion.

The US government pays farmers not to grow crops. I would rather pay them to grow crops to make ethanol and reduce oil usage than pay them to do nothing!
