My understanding of this forum

Posted: Feb 22, 2012

I love to discuss political issues in an intelligent fashion, and I have friends w/ vastly different opinions than my own.  Sure, sometimes it gets a little heated because we are committed to our beliefs.  Thing is, we can sit and discuss the issues w/o calling each other nasty names and judging each other.  Maybe I'm a bit naive, but I can't understand ehy we can't address issues w/o personally attacking each other.  Some of the posts here would make a stellar spinoff of "Housewives of..."

That's why I wish the two boards were separated - what if - sm

There really needs to be a separation of conservative and liberal boards. The name calling is getting so bad. I don't understand why topics cannot be discussed in a civilized manner. I was just talking to a friend about that today. I don't know when the hatred and bickering and downright nasty name calling came about but my first election I voted in was Carter (forget who ran against him). I voted for him and my mom voted for the republican. We talked but never got downright nasty and you could even talk to strangers about politics and it would be civilized. Why do people have such hatred and enjoy calling other people nasties. We are all human after all. We all have our own opinions and sometimes you just have to learn to say "I respect your opinion but I disagree".

I love to bounce ideas around and I want to hear both sides yet do it peacefully, and thus, I find it complete BS that anyone who calls me "close-minded" or "brainwashed" or, my personal favorite, "moron," especially when they don't know me in real life. Climb off that high horse already and get over yourself.

I, too, have been called all kinds of names, and all sorts of assumptions made about everything from my politic beliefs to the size of my butt (yep, I'm sporting a size 6, but was called an obese, fat behind something or other...lol). It seems that people that have no basis for their beliefs, other than talking points, resort to that because, if you ask them a question or for an explanation of their belief, they do not have one. Since they have no basis for their beliefs, they come out of the gait swinging and it goes downhill from there. In reality, you may not agree with someone, but you would certainly walk away from them with the knowledge as to why they said what they did. If people on this board display such bizarre, nasty, hateful behavior, why would Congress be any different? Shows complete, total intolerance of any idea other than their own.

there was a liberal board and a conservative board. I think the moderator described the reason for the change as wanting to promote debate and conversation, but those on the far fringes of both sides are never capable of that.

The first election I voted in, I voted for Clinton and I don't recall that being a particularly nasty election. I think maybe it goes in cycles because I remember it being particularly bad between Bush and Kerry, but not before. My mom says she remembers it being pretty nasty when Goldwater ran, but not much after that. I think it depends on what is most important at that time and what either side says they're going to do about it - there's so much passion about politics these days because it affects so many people in one way or another.

Maybe if some of us agree not to name-call and not to respond to those who name-call, we can either convert the haters or make them bored so they'll leave :) It's worth a try - we can use your phrase - "I respect your opinion, but I disagree."

Maybe the boards should be separated. After all, the - party system has split apart the country.

They were previously. Posters crossed over to argue. Face it, the board is pretty dead without the cross talk. I liken it to the corner bar. You drop in and have a drink with the locals. There is the pugilist (think Mike Tyson) who isnt too bright but likes to scuffle. There is the puckered spinster who is knows all and is in everybody's business because she is lonely. There are a few friends. If you really want serious discussion of the issues you go to reading groups or specific websites that align with your beliefs.

Amazing when someone actually stops the insults and listens to what someone else says. There is never one side that has all the answers, no matter how much they think they do.

I honestly think it's the anonymity factor - - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
When you discuss topics such as religion and politics in person, people are much more apt to think before they speak. Here, it's totally anonymous and people spout of whatever they want - they are faceless and don't have to look the other party in the eye. Everything I have ever said here or other places is absolutely what I would be able to say directly to someone. I think boards like these allow those who live for negativity to keep feeding off of it and adding to it, without that eye contact thing to worry about. Just my opinion :)

Also has to do with no name use - Conservative

[ In Reply To ..]
People also hide behind the fact the they do not own what they write by virtue of a post name. Therefore, some posts you do not know to skip over, and clearly would not read if you knew who was posting. If everyone had to use their post name, and we all knew exactly whom we were speaking to (even though we all have a pretty good idea of who the trouble makers are), we could easily skip over those posts and move onto to people we wanted to read. If you had to sign it, bet that would eliminate about 60% of all the posts on this board.

There has to be some generally accepted basis for a starting point in any discussion. Posters on this board cannot even agree on a source of information. If I say all your sources are biased and you say all my sources are biased how can we have any kind of coherent debate?

Some Help Understanding This PleaseOct 16, 2011
I'm young, a new mom, and have little in the way of "life experiences".  I don't want to keep making stupid costly mistakes, so I've decided to seek some help.  I want to understand my new health insurance.  I took my little one to a highly recommended pediatrician, got there, signed all the papers, and afterwards was blindsided when the total bill for the check up was $170!  All I was prepared to pay was the $35 dollar payment that my insurance told me I had t ...

Understanding Liberal Jan 18, 2017
1.  It's not all about Trump per se.  Trump is the "face" of liberal rage and bewilderment over something much larger - namely, the nearly nationwide rejection of radical liberalism that they've experienced over the last several election cycles (Obama's reelection notwithstanding). In state after state, the radical left has lost ground. 2.  In the context of #1, one critical consequence of this rejection is that they have lost the opportunity to tilt the Supreme Co ...

Paris, And A New Understanding Of The Value Of Nov 14, 2015
In the wake of the horrific event in Paris, one of the themes on news channels this morning is predictable - and very important:  How can a free society defend citizens who frequent "soft" targets, meaning public places where it's neither feasible, practical or perhaps even desirable to maintain the presence of armed security forces? It's fairly obvious, even in the early after-action reports, that there was no one at any of the six or seven(?) attack sites who was armed and migh ...

It Looks Like This Forum Is Aflame. Is It SomethingSep 14, 2012

Just Curious About Non-MTs On This Forum. SmNov 26, 2012
I saw part of a post the other day where someone said there were posters here who are not transcriptionists. How many are there? Guess I just assumed that everyone who frequented here was an MT.  I am just curious why you are hanging around a political forum that is part of a transcriptionist forum.  Obviously, you are allowed to post here, but just find it odd you would want to hang around with us.  LOL.  It must be boring here with so many other political forums to post on. ...
