These workers are hired on B1/B2 visas and told what to say to immigration officials when arriving to this country and given letters to give to immigration officials. Apparently, this type of visa allows you to work in the USA in a supervisory capacity, but they are not.
Mercedes-Benzi states that it "contractually requires all of its contractors to comply with all applicable laws, including those laws and regulations related to immigration, safety, wages and hours."
Of note, Mercedes-Benz has fired one of it's subcontractors that were not following these laws. This has apparently been going on for quite some time in companies like Volkswagon, Mitzubishi and other foreign car factories in this country.
It remains to be seen if the actual companies knew about it, but it sounds like they need to keep better in-tuned with the subcontractors they are hiring and what they are doing. Although 1000's of American jobs were lost over this, hopefully this abuse of visas will end.
