When they first announced their decision to revoke funding from Planned Parenthood, they said it was because they had a rule against giving money to organizations that were under investigation. But they give money to organizations that are under investigation all the damn time. And they certainly don't have any trouble taking money from companies that are under investigation:

Susan G. Komen For The Cure CEO Nancy Brinker has spent the last 48 hours embarking on a bizarrely prim damage control tour wherein she folds her hands in her lap and tells reporters that when they said they were stopping the flow of funds to Planned Parenthood because of a rule (that was definitely not just made up by Karen Handel so that they'd have an excuse to stop funding Planned Parenthood), what they meant was they were just trying to streamline the process and I guess that whole first press release about how they were following a rule was maybe not intended to be a factual statement. But regardless, let's take a moment to examine how, if the Handel Rule actually exists, it's been completely non-enforced.

Let's first turn to Penn State, recipient of a 5-year, $7.5 million grant courtesy of Komen. Mother Jones found that a grant was awarded to the institution in 2008, before the 2011 establishment of a rule that declares that Komen will no longer be donating funds to organizations under investigation at the local, state, or federal level. Since the federal government is currently investigating Penn State for its institutional role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, if the "Handel Rule" were being applied uniformly, monies to Penn State's affiliated hospital should be suspended until the investigation's completion. But cash still flows to Happy Valley.

According to the charity's website, in the last year, Komen's given quite a few grants to quite a few hospitals and medical schools associated with quite a few investigations.

They've given a grant to researchers at the University of Kansas, even though two scientists working there are currently under investigation for plagiarizing portions of their research.

Funds haven't been interrupted to the University of Texas at Austin, even though a currently pending lawsuit alleges that the school is discriminatory against Asians.

Boston's Dana-Faber Cancer Institute is named in the investigation into the death of a former employee who ingested cyanide.

Komen's also given a grant to the University of Texas Southwestern's medical center, which was under investigation at both the state and federal level as recently as last summer.

An organ donation center managed by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, another Komen grant recipient, was recently under investigation for having an improper financial relationship with a vendor.

They've given money to Duke University's Medical Center, even though Duke's under investigation for Title IX violations.

A grant to the University of California at San Diego's Medical School flowed through uninterrupted, even though last summer, a recreational fencing coach there was investigated for sexual assault. (If an individual is under investigation, does that mean the entire organization should be treated as though it's under investigation? Best err on the side of caution!)

Money's still going to the University of California at San Francisco, even though a seat belt-less shuttle bus led to the death of a professor last summer.

And protesters who claim they were wrongly treated at the University of California-Berkeley are suing the school, which is still receiving money from Komen. Shall I go on?

And Komen's supposedly high minded (and patently false) claim that they won't give grants to organizations that are under investigation of course doesn't apply to money flowing into the organization.

They get money from Quilted Northern, which is owned by the Koch Brothers, who have gotten in trouble with doing secret business with Iran.

They've got a big crush on for Bank of America, Public Enemy Number 1 when it comes to farking over the American consumer in all colors of the rainbow (especially pink!).

Just a couple of months ago big Komen supporter Merck was forced to pay almost $1 billion to settle charges that it illegally marketed the drug Vioxx.

Another big Komen donor is 3M which just was forced to pay $3 million to settle an age discrimination suit.

Pink pimper Oracle was investigated last summer for violating antibribery laws while doing business in Africa.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Federal safety regulators began investigating claims that Komen corporate buddy KitchenAid was making dishwashers that light stuff on fire.

Komen also gladly accepts money given by Ford, American Airlines, Key Bank, and Microsoft — all of which were recently under investigation. Talk about inconsistent principles.

And yet, Nancy Brinker continues her confusing damage control tour as though it will be a piece of cake to convince a skeptical public that Susan G. Komen For the Cure is not completely full of it, when it's clear that not only did they defund Planned Parenthood because of Karen Handel's rabidly anti-Planned Parenthood agenda, but they also lied about it, twice. They lied when they said that they cut Planned Parenthood out because of a rule— because they don't follow that rule in any case but the case of Planned Parenthood. And they didn't stop funding Planned Parenthood because of "streamlining," because they should have foreseen that the public backlash at the family planning provider's defunding would have resulted in untenable backlash. The conservative leadership of Susan G. Komen for the Cure severely underestimated their supporters— just because they're women who are fine with decking themselves out in pink feather boas doesn't mean they're stupid and gullible.

More baloney from SK - Sneaks

[ In Reply To ..]
When Komen messed with Planned Parenthood, they messed with an organization with millions of vocal supporters tired of seeing the health care provider being politically stigmatized. But when Komen's newly Karen Handel flavored muscle messed with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the University of Kansas, the US National Cancer Institute, the Society for Women's Health Research, and Yale University, last fall the only people who noticed were the researchers who were no longer receiving the more than $12 million in funding Komen had provided.

The grantpocalypse happened last November, according to Life News. After enduring years of mounting pressure from embryo/fetus enthusiasts, Komen ceased providing grants to institutions that worked with embryonic stem cells and added a statement to their website that read,

"Komen supports research on the isolation, derivation, production, and testing of stem cells that are capable of producing all or almost all of the cell types of the developing body and may result in improved understanding of or treatments for breast cancer, but are derived without creating a human embryo or destroying a human embryo. A priority in our research funding is to quickly find and deliver effective treatments, especially for the most lethal forms of breast cancer, while seeking effective preventive strategies, enhanced screening methodologies, and solutions to disparities in breast cancer outcomes for diverse women."

But Komen money never directly funded embryonic stem cell research in the first place; Komen already had a policy that barred their grants from financing research involving human embryos. It seems that the move to cut funding to the above mentioned institutions was because someone, somewhere in the receiving institutions did (or was open to doing) embryonic stem cell research. Guilt by association.

Further, Komen's move to blacklist groups associated in any way with embryonic stem cell research is directly in line with what a letter from a Catholic Bishop requested the organization do. And it's also in line with— wait for it— Karen Handel's political views on embryonic stem cell research. In 2010, the then-gubernatorial candidate said,

"Finally, I oppose embryonic stem cell research, which creates life solely for the purpose of destroying it. I do, however, strongly support adult stem cell research, which has produced numerous scientific achievements without terminating innocent lives in the process."

[ In Reply To ..]
when they deemed women who get within 100 feet of a PP facility not worthy of breast cancer screening and deserving of having their funding cut. Access to these services should not be predicated on enforcing some unspoken Grover Norquistesque pledge to boycott PP, the teabagger's #1 whipping post. This latest volley in their war on women's reproductve rights has suffered a big fat failure to launch, which is as it should be.
That's right. Anyway, they help a lot of POOR people and - we don't want them helped. nm

The total joke is planned parenthood via virginity pledges, the rhythm method - and God's will

especially when these concepts are being promoted by partisans who declare the embryo of a low-income couple a person at conception, then a slacker at birth.
PP totak joke - Yeah - I guess it's better to kill them
[ In Reply To ..]
Real strong reasoning capabilities your have (that is sarcasm towards your comment just to be clear).
Here's the deal. - Family planning is
[ In Reply To ..]
an intensely private undertaking. The government recognizes, empowers and protects a woman's right to determine which legal means she uses to achieve her ultimate goal of either limiting family size or increasing it. In doing so, they have implied that the pro-lifers' religion-based beliefs have not been infringed upon by simply declaring this to be so. You still have every right to choose NOT to utilize abortion services as part of your approach, but have no right under the law to impose those religion-based restrictions on others.

Besides, this part of the discussion has NOTHING to do with low-income women accessing breast cancer screening. There are plenty of women who use this PP service who DO NOT believe in abortion. Our local chapter services a Hispanic/Catholic-majority population, most of whom would never even consider having a pregnancy terminated and, in fact, do not believe in birth control either, yet they are among the first the GOP will call on the carpet for having too many kids.

IMO, this is just another area the GOP has painted itself into a corner with illogical, untenable social engineering platform policies that show just how out of touch with reality they really are.
Here's the deal - Those NOT believing in - abortion are forced to pay for it
[ In Reply To ..]
Through their tax dollars. This has NOTHING to do with Dems/Repubs. See you were pretty quick to go after the GOP. What about the DEMs that do not believe in abortion? You left them out altogether. Pretty clear where your bias leans. Never saw anyone "called on the carpet" for having too many kids....what about those "having too many abortions"? Your entire post is bogus and 1-sided. Speak for yourself only and quit the generalizations that do NOT include those that do not believe in killing babies....you are not equipped to speak for the approximate 50% that do not believe in abortion. However, appears you are well equipped to support those believe in abortion at will.
AGAIN, PP abortion services are NOT funded - by taxpayers. The SM

No need to speak for anyone else. - The law does that for me.
[ In Reply To ..]
It's funny how you support your main contention, that this has NOTHING to do with dems or pubs, by then framing a patently transparent pubs vs dems argument. As for those democrats who do not believe in abortion, they are much more likely to distinguish between their own personal beliefs on the subject and how to appropriately represent the interests of their constituents, by voting in support of Pro-Choice measures that uphold CURRENT LAW.

I made it a point in the OP to include those who do not believe in abortion, who are in no way prevented from exercising those beliefs by refraining from undergoing the procedure. Again, under CURRENT LAW, they have no rights beyond that to impose their religion-based self-righteous morality on the rest of us.

What is crystal clear about this PP/Komen dustup is that PLENTY of folks have PP's back when it comes to keeping the lights on at their facilities and making sure that the intrusive, violence-prone, murdering, Big Government fringe factions will never succeed in shutting down any and all services PP provides.

....and for the last time, tax dollars do not fund abortions. Period.
No need to speak for anyone - Certainly not you -wordy one
[ In Reply To ..]
Boy, how naive you are. TAX DOLLARS ARE USED FOR ABORTION. I am a Dem and I do not support abortions and vote Pro-Life. Pretty hard to find any Democrat in that arena. Twist and spin all you want. You are SO wrong and anyone that actually has a pulse knows their tax dollars go to abortions. Rant all you want....this has nothing to do with dems/repubs, like you try to spin it. Has everything to do with life versus death. BTW, find it interesting pro-lifers never mentioned party affilitation...was done by pro-abortionists.

Guess they saw the half-million-dollar writing on the wall. - The sucking sound you hear is

[ In Reply To ..]
Koman donations being siphoned off and redirected in Planned Parenthood's direction...more than half-a-million in 24 hours...to make up for the funding shortfall created by Koman's PR disaster/nightmare. CA Senator Barbara Boxer and CA Rep Janet Speier renounced the decision in their speeches to Congress, then revoked their customary donations to the foundation in protest.

Guess cooler heads prevailed when the Koman's CEO decided the political statement Sr VP Karen Handel was trying to engineer behind-the-scenes wasn't worth ultimately losing millions in future donations.

Koman's donations also saw an uptick at the hands of antibortion prolifers, thanking Handel for her inflammatory fiscal activism. Bet those showing their gratitude yesterday are really feeling ripped-off today. I say let them eat their just desserts.

Score one for ProChoicers everywhere. Power to the People and to their $5 and $10 small-change donations, which made all the difference. As for Handel, hopefully Koman will let the blowback die down, then quietly find a discrete way to demote their Sr VP and transfer her down to the basement copy room. Anyone willing to defund breast cancer screening services (education, exams and mammograms) from women utilizing PP for ongoing preventative medical care and, in the process, wreck a mutually successful, amicable 5-year partnership, thus narrowing the parameters of breast cancer prevention, is obviously not fit to serve the foundation's expressed mission.

women screen for breast cancer and get treatment if they have it. You would support that woman who probably has children who want their mom to live.
Supporting life - Never said did not support breast screening
[ In Reply To ..]
Again, a case of reading into message what you want and misrepresenting post. Komen has never stopped women from getting screening at any other facility and, in fact, had increased the facilities women could go to. Pretty quick to try and kick up dust, but time would be better spent reading the entire post. NO WOMAN WAS REFUSED CARE, AND STILL DO NOT BELIEVE IN ABORTION. Also, Cancer Society provides breast screening, ovarian cancer screening, colonoscopy, biopsy and followup treatment and care for FREE. You can go to the physician/facility you want and Cancer Society pays them directly. No money comes out of your pocket. If you do not have an MD name, Cancer Society will provide info directly to you - you do not even have to leave your home to get info; however, you actually have to go to the appointment for the care, much the same way you would have to travel to an abortion clinic. PP not the only game in town, as people want to believe. Got it now?? Understand??
They do not do mammograms or treat breast cancer. - I know. I USED to work for PP! nm
[ In Reply To ..]

Komen funds pay for mammogram referrals from PP - 6400 last year
[ In Reply To ..]
of the 70,000 mammogrphy referrals. That PP refers this procedure out to existing facilities is a cost cutting measure that clinics serving low-income patients routinely practice. If you worked there in the past, you know this, but deliberately omitted that piece of info from your post, leading one to logically conclude that your post is every bit as motivated by partisanship as Handel's decision to cut the funding.

have had relatives, friends or coworkers impacted by breast cancer. Speaking out in either condemntion or support of such a decision is NOT bullying. It's simply citizens exercising 1st amendment rights at their job site. Fact is, no official action was taken, no resolutions proposed or voted upon. The donors determined the outcome of Komen's PR boondoggle, and they have EVERY right to express themelves on where they want to see the funds go.
Not part of electorate when - Using the congressional seat to bully
[ In Reply To ..]
Pretty much everyone knows someone impacted by breast cancer or vaginal cancer. Bullying from the Senate is not what they were elected to do and it IS BULLYING. Fact is, official action was taken by 26 senators when they wrote on CONGRESSIONAL LETTERHEAD their displeasure with Komen. Not one of those senators wrote to Komen as a private citizen. Donors did not determine the outcome, political pressure did...very, very different. But heh, keep spinning. We ALL know what actually happpened. Just very few will admit it because it it does not put the spin or light on their opinion they way they want it to.

So do the donors. In this case, they chose PP over Komen. - The only bully here

Yeah-no choice with PP- - 350+abortions to 1 adoption referral
[ In Reply To ..]
Exactly. Evidently you don't bother to read PPs own stats. Again, so you get it clearl; there are 350+ abortions for every 1 adoption REFERRAL that PP makes. Where's the choice? Many, many women have stated for many, many years, OPTIONS WERE NEVER DISCUSSED WITH THEM. Guess thousands and thousands of those women all over the country are wrong and you and only you have all the info. Think not. PP in business for the abortions period.
