What do you think about the "Komen For the Cure"

funds for mammograms and other breast care at Planned Parenthood?

Regardless of how you feel about Choice, (let's not rehash that one again, please), doesn't it bother you that an organization like Koman, which always had such a good reputation before, is allowing themselves to be swayed by political pressure? (Which of course is backed by --- you guessed it --- megabucks).

More and more, it seems like nothing in this country is sacred, when it comes to a few people with too much money trying to manipulate everything.  Scary times.

;

Glad to see - Komen do what they did

I do not agree with your assessment at all. Koman was very clear about their policy regarding ANY organization that was being investigated on any level. Speaking of the megabucks, there are plenty of hollywood types that could very easily make up what Koman pulled. PP could easily be privately funded, and quit using my tax dollars for abortion. It has always bothered me that my tax money was being used for purposely that go against my religious beliefs, yet I was forced to do so anyway.

Komen has nothing to do with your tax money - .

But I know how you feel. Having my tax money driving up the deficit in unlawful wars and murder makes me irate.

wrong - sm

They don't pay taxes. That equals lost revenue. That has everything to do with our tax money.
Wrong -sm - Please read the post

OP clearly states it was the tax money given to PP (Planned Parenthood). No reference was made in any way regarding what Koman pays/does not pay in taxes.
I didn't say it was tax money that went to PP - - Koman used to donate to them. - OP

They stopped donating to breast cancer prevention at PP because of pressure from politics, or big business, or both. Regardless of how one feels about other services PP provides (it provides far more than just family planning), it just doesn't seem right that one sector of our country should be able to pressure them into removing their support of PP. (Or anyone, for that matter).

Does anyone know more details? Like who it was that pressured S.G. Koman, or what they threatened them with if they didn't comply?
I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link - .

Google Cliff Stearns Koman. The NPR article is pretty concise.

A larger and more important question: Do you know the history of Planned Parenthood and its founder, eugenicist Margaret Sanger?

Of course you don't.
I know that PP treated my cervical cancer ... - me

...when I didn't have health insurance.

I don't care how it was founded. Although I read about it and it's not quite as simple as some people want to make it out to be.
PP provided me with low-cost birth control - mthead

w/Pap, pelvic and breast exams several times throughout my married life, in between cross-country moves, schools, and jobs. From my experience, they prevent far more pregnancies than they end.
Health Dept - does the same thing

In many areas, Planned Parenthood IS the health department - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
In rural areas, the same health care worker you see for birth control, may also see you for a new baby visit. Reproductive health isn't just a big city thing.
Planned Parenthood and Health Dept - No where in my state

If anyone knew what Sanger believed and why she started PP, their hair would catch on fire. Most won't read, easier to insult por-lifers.
Whatever erroneous right-wing garbage you...sm - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
are spewing about what went on in the 1920's has no bearing on PP in the present.

One of the reasons right-wing racist groups estranged themselves back in the 40's from the pre-PP movement was because they were upset that eugenics was NOT on the table. They were perfectly happy to be a part of it all when they thought "undesirables" would be prevented from conceiving.

Koman used to donae - Whatever happened to freedom
[ In Reply To ..]
Regardless of why Koman stopped donating, why should anyone be forced to donate to PP using your criteria. I guess, using your criteria again, it is okay for someone to be pressured to giving to PP, but not okay for them to be pressued to stop giving to PP - double standard at best. BTW, PP supporters hacked into Koman computers; very mature behavior (don't hear any outrage over their pressure tactics and criminal behavior). No one is stopped from contributing to PP or Koman or any other organization or charity if they chose to. The Cancer Society will also treat women FOR FREE if there is a problem (received treatment from the Cancer Society myself, completely free). PP is not the only choice for any woman; however, PP really pushes that aspect. Not to mention, the numerous criminal proceedings PP is facing. Do not blame Koman one bit - More power to them. PP IS NOT THE ONLY CHOICE.
Anyone donating to PP can designate their donation...sm - oldtimer

to go toward breast cancer screening. No worries about your money being used for something you disapprove of. I just hate seeing women's health being compromised for religious or political reasons. For the working poor, those not eligible for Medicaid and without health insurance, PP is a vital resource for their health. It started out as an organization dealing with reproductive health (hence the name Planned Parenthood), birth control, Pap smears, eventually abortion referral. It evolved over the years to much more than that including other women's health concerns like breast cancer screening, STD testing, heart disease prevention and screening, etc. Ideally, the name should have been changed years ago to properly convey the actual mission, women's healthcare.
Designated donatons - Guess you don't read much
[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah right. I am sure PP, who admitted they were engaged with pimps and "sex trafficking" of 14-year-olds is really going to comply with that part of the law. Hence, you should actually research their entire history and the history of their founder...not just the propaganda put out by PP. Killing babies has nothing to do with "health care". Be happy to provide a full Webster definition of health...wonder how the babies murdered would feel about the "care" they received.

Not referring to Komen - Was referring to the millions

[ In Reply To ..]
given to Planned Parenthood....they receive massive tax dollars. Never said anyhing about Koman getting my tax dollars.

I really don't understand how anyone could - think it is a good thing SM

[ In Reply To ..]
when millions of women will not be able to get affordable OB/GYN care. PP encourages family planning, offering affordable birth control. Why do antichoice people disagree with that?

Again - PP NOT ONLY CHOiCE

[ In Reply To ..]
Brainwashing from PP in overdrive evidenced all over this board. PP not only chocie. Can receive all the service you mentioned through Koman-sponsored servcices, Health Dept, Cancer Society to name a few. Why do pro-abortionists disagree with that?

Doesn't the Hyde amendment prohibit PP - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
from using tax money for abortions?

Hyde amendment - PP lies about use of funds

[ In Reply To ..]
You are right, but PP pro-abortion people ignore what laws they don't want to follow...typical. Glad to see Koman redirect their funds to facilities THAT DIRECTLY TREAT WOMEN and not subcontract as PP does for many services. Pretty clear reading these posts today, most have not idea or do nto care how PP conducts themselves within or outside of the law. YEAH FOR KOMAN.

ain't that the truth - .

[ In Reply To ..]
And no one wins. Nonpartison companies who endorse Koman will likely yank their contributions. We all lose in this. We, being women... what a surprise.

I will just make sure to donate to someone other than Komen - nm

Made sure to donate to KOMAN immediately - Never donate to PP

"Komen for the Cure" - Pressure -you gotta be kidding

[ In Reply To ..]
Why is it okay ONLY FOR PP to use pressure? They are NOT the only choice, but many have been brainwashed into thinking PP is the be all to end all. Services by Komen have not stopped and women can still get ALL of the services provided...just not through PP. What is so "sacred" about PP? Speaking of "sacred", what about those that actually belief LIFE IS SACRED, yet are treated horribly...just look at the posts on this borad. Personally, never been much into baby killers, but heh, I guess since YOU don't want a rehash of what PP is REALLY about and only want to discredit Komen...guess we know where you are coming from. Komen has NOT DENIED ONE WOMAN SERVICE OR CARE.
