and make it funny!

Well, there is obviously ONE southern white Republican bigot. Where there's smoke...

Incidentally, I'm making a list of these predominantly southern states that do hateful things, so I can make sure I never visit them.  Some of them rely on tourism as a source of income.  I used to enjoy Virginia Beach, but given what's going on in Virginia vis-a-vis gay people, I won't be returning there.  Same thing with Texas and a few others. I just wouldn't feel comfortable in places like these.

I hear you, Nikki -- I live in GA now, but VA is my beloved - sweetpea

home state and was planning on moving back this year, but it's heading in a direction I do not like, and I'm having second thoughts. (Talk about going from the frying pan to the fire!) I'm actually thinking about a Winnebago -- the thought of being mobile sounds too tempting, just in case. I love those Canadians -- such sensible people! LOL

Nova Scotia, here I come!!

Put in a good word for me up in Canada too! - ASmom

[ In Reply To ..]
I have always liked the Canadians as well and they seem to be a reasonable and rational group of people. Actually had a boyfriend from Canada many years ago-very calm, genuine guy. Anyway, they earned even more kudos from me when the got Ann Coulter booted from speaking there recently.

I find it ironic that some of these "people" say things like "I want my country back" and so would I but the country they seem want back is full of bigots and hatred and total lack of compassion for their fellow man. That is not the country that I want back.

Hey, Nikki! Send me a copy of that list as well!
So you don't ebrace freedom of speech? - Sgt Mojo
[ In Reply To ..]
With your statement that they earned more kudos when they got Ann Coulter booted from speaking there.

I'm not a big Ann Coulter fan. I don't like her, but I also don't dislike her. I just don't really care one way or the other, but for an angry mob to start harassing her because they didn't like her and didn't want her to speak there I just felt was wrong and uncalled for. If people don't like her then don't go. Evidently others did want to hear her speak. There was no reason for what they did to her.

But to say people earn your kudo's for their hatred towards a person and getting her to cancel her speech goes to show that you are only for freedom of speech if it's for the side you agree with.

I read an article that summed it up:

"In Defense of Ann Coulter - Blame Canada, for it has made, by way of protest and free-speech ignorance, a martyr out of a wingnut. Which is about the stupidest thing a country can do these days."

Here's the full article. You might enjoy the article because the author does not like Ann Coulter and calls her a "tiresome freak" among other things not so nice about her, so I think you might enjoy it.

http://www.esquire.com/the-side/opinion/ann-coulter-canada-tour-032410

So those are the people you give "kudos" too??? Nice....
I happen to agree with ASmom; I think the point she is trying to make - sweetpea

There's a fine line between "free speech", and hate speech, and Ann Coulter definitely falls into the hate speech category. I highly doubt our founding fathers had that in mind for the First Amendment. People were respectful and decent back then; they could never predict that we would turn into such a hateful society. I applaud those students and school officials for giving her the boot. I think she is despicable and should not be encouraged to peddle her hatred and ignorance around. It's a matter of integrity and making a stand. I heard someone make a comment about "bastardizing" the First Amendment, which is the perfect description for her kind of "speech".
Thanks, sweetpea. That is exactly what I was - trying to say but you did
[ In Reply To ..]
it much better.
Well that is your opinion, but I respectfully disagree - Sgt Mojo (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
You may not like her and call it hate speech, but I have just gone over and read some of her archives. It is not all hate speech. She has some very good articles that really hit at the truth. There is a huge difference between speaking the truth and "hate speech".

As for our founding fathers....I highly doubt they had a lot of what is going on in our government in mind when they wrote all of what they did.

First Amendment states "...infringing on the freedom of speech..."

Ann Coulter is an established writer and speaker. You may not agree with what she says but that does not automatically make it "hate speech" just because you don't like it. If you want to start grouping people in "hate speech", then you are going to have to include all Olberman, Matthews, etc. Even though I may not like what they have to say it does not give me the right to assemble an angry mob and commit violence towards anyone.

So you applaud the angry mob inciting violence against a person also. You also don't agree with freedom of speech evidently unless its freedom of speech for your side.

All I say is she was invited to speak. Evidently there were a lot of people who wanted to hear what she had to say. What gives one group the right to take that away from another group. Answer: Nothing. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if Obama or Biden or Clinton or any democrat was asked to speak at a function and an angry mob showed up threatening violence if they spoke. I think its despicable that people will go to great lengths to suppress the other sides rights. It's only their side they are tolerant to.

Ann Coulter has the right to write and sell books and give speeches. Just like Olberman, Matthews, O'Reilly, and Beck do. If you don't like what someone has to say just turn the channel, don't buy the book, or don't go to the function where other people asked them to speak.

And I am ashamed of people who support the "freedom of speech only for my side and if I don't like it I'll label it ignorance and hate speech" attitude.
Ditto on what ASMom said in an earlier post . sm - sweetpea

we'll just have to agree to disagree. It's not about what I like or don't like -- Of course I don't like a lot of things she says: I'm human! She does have that right and I could care less. It's her delivery I don't respect. It is not necessary for her to be so mean and nasty -- and, excuse me, Maddow, Olbermann, etc. may express their views with passion and with purpose, but I have never heard either one of them attack and insult anyone like that. (I would welcome any link you can provide proving otherwise). The Muslim girl (who obviously went to see Coulter speak) did not deserve to be direspected and humiliated like that, (just because that seems to be the only approach Coulter has to rake in the $$). That's what I find despicable about her. You see, that's where integrity and class come in and she is pathetically deficient in either.

This has nothing to due with political preference -- this has to do with someone's basic character, and I find that sort of character ditasteful from a human aspect.

So, we will just have to disagree and leave it at that.

He called West Point "Enemy Camp" and I'm always hearing/reading about his racist comments he makes.

Look, I could find a ton of links on TV personalities that insult people. They all seem to do it.

I'm all for freedom of speech whether or not I agree with them or not, and it's is my freedom to change the channel, not buy their books, or go to listen to them speak. I don't give kudos to an angry mob who tries to bully and threaten people they don't agree with. Everyone has the right to publicly speak (especially if they are invited to do just that), but I find it shameful and disrespectful when one group tries to shut down the other group all because they don't like them.

So yes, we will have to disagree on that.
i agree with you. She has just as much right to speak as do the others - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
Protests have their place but when someone stifles that speech after being invited, that's a different story.

I wouldn't want Fred Phelps to speak at a college to warp their minds. Ann Coulter is harsh, but she does have some good points.

As I said in an earlier post, if I can't get past the first paragraph, I don't read her, but if I can, then I will read her whole article. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't, but no one should have disrepect for the speaker.

Sorry to hear both of you feel that way. sm - sweetpea
[ In Reply To ..]
"Harsh?" Disrespect is a 2-way street. She disrespects anyone who thinks differently that she does, looks different than she does, speaks differently than she does. I have not had time to watch the links provided, and I will humbly accept whatever "proof" you have, but I have a feeling it is not going to compare to Ann Coulter disrespecting a student who came to hear her speak only to be horribly humiliated and demeaned. An innocent student(who happens to be Muslim) . . . We'll see. If her points are so "good", then she should be able to get them across without being hateful. That's my absolute opinion and I'm sticking to it.

With all due respect to you both, I would be ashamed to hold someone like her up as being someone to look up to, or to admire.

FYI, Jesus would never have made such an impact on the world had he been a spiteful, bigoted, hateful man . . .
With all due respect to BT and Sgt Mojo - I totally agree with everything

Think about why Jesus was persecuted and died on the Cross. He was hated by many for speaking about the Word of God.
Sorry. Not a valid comparison. Both were persecuted, and that where the similarities end. - nm

I too am sorry to hear you feel that way. Whether or not you like her, the fact remains that she is a strong conservative woman who speaks her mind. She studied at Cornell with a BA in history, and studied and received her JD at a Michigan law school. She is a strong intelligent woman who tells the issues as she sees them. She speaks about political issues and gives her opinion, whether or not it is popular with the masses. She doesn’t sweet talk her way around things. She just gives the facts. She gets people to think for themselves. I may not always agree with her, but whenever I hear about what she is talking about I then do my research on whatever the subject is. She stands up for what she feels is right. She calls people out and holds them responsible for the things they say and decisions they make. She does not disrespect anyone who thinks differently than her. She may have a difference of opinion, but she doesn’t disrespect them. Sharing a difference of opinion is different than disrespecting (unless of course people are disrespectful to her, she dishes it back to them) Maybe that's what people don't like about her, that she won't just sit there and take being bashed, who knows. As for why you think she disrespects anyone who “looks differently than she does and speaks differently than she does” I have no idea where you are coming from on those statements. I have never seen her disrespect a person because they look different than she does or speaks differently than she does. If you have some links to back that up I am more than willing to look at them and research it some more. I just have never seen or heard it. If you are talking about that one student, to be honest I did not see or hear about that incident, so am not going to comment on it one way or the other without knowing the facts. But it sounds like you are talking about more than that one incident, so would like to know what instances you are referring to. Olberman however, disrespects anyone who doesn't agree with him all the time and that is why I posted those links. The same goes for Matthews. Mathews is just a bigot and hater (IMHO). I think all TV people, whether it be a show host or guest should be respectful to all people, especially if they invite them as a guest.

As for looking up to people, it is all a matter of opinion and likes. There are many people far far worse I would never ever in 100 years look up to if I was a young woman. Pelosi, Clinton, and Sheila Jackson Lee (or Lee Jackson) to name just three. Ann Coulter is a strong Christian woman who never wavers in her beliefs. She speaks her mind whether or not people like it. She studied history and law and worked in corporate law and was a legislator with the Center for Individual Rights. She is a writer and public speaker. I don’t agree with everything she says, but yes I think she is a person who young women can look up to. There is nothing to be ashamed about that, and that is my opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

As for her speaking gig - She was invited to speak (i.e. people wanted to hear her). Those that didn’t should have stayed home. What they did to her was not right. No matter how much you like or dislike someone, if you ask them to come and speak then they should be allowed to speak. It’s called freedom of speech (and courtesy), and like BT said nobody should have disrespect for a speaker. (Especially since they invited her). Instead what that angry mob did was make their country look bad, which is really a shame.

As for your comment about Jesus, I think we should leave comments like that to the faith board. Reading your statement reminds me of statements that the Phelps character makes. I say leave the Jesus statement for the faith board.

I’m sorry, but I will just never agree that people should feel its okay to shut down a person’s freedom of speech just because they don’t agree with what they say. Just not the way I was raised.
But, they were exercising their freedom of speech. They just out-exercised her, that's all. - nm
