During Barack Obama’s first presidential visit to Japan, he managed to work in a private lunch with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. The lunch, which lasted about an hour, was reported to have just been the three of them plus one interpreter. While the topics of their lunchtime conversation remain a mystery, the Japanese media delightedly reported on the event, stating how Obama made a polite short English greeting before entering the palace.

Some in America, however, have picked up on the brief, but rather deep bow Obama made as he shook hands with the Emperor. Some have decried it as a complete gaffe, some have pointed out the faux pas in Japanese etiquette of not mixing a bow and a handshake, and others have commented that Obama is simply showing respect for other cultures."

While the Japanese media has largely avoided commenting on the incident, numerous comments have been made on Japanese blogs and open forums. The general comments have been rather different in tone from that of American counterparts. Here are some select comments made on several sites:

[All comments translated from Japanese]

  • “What a bow!”
  • “Such a deep bow from Obama, what a fine guy.”
  • “I’m surprised he bowed. He’s really trying hard to meet the Japanese way!”
  • “President Obama is a top-class person, isn’t he? Amazing!”
  • “The Emperor is giving a nice smile!”
  • “Is the Japanese Emperor really that special?”
  • “The Emperor or the Pope, the President or the Prime Minister, whoever is greater is not something that I think can be decided objectively.”
  • “I laughed because it was a much better bow than I had imagined.”
  • “Obama’s huge!”
  • “Obama has more of a true Japanese heart than most Japanese do.”

It is nice to see the Japanese have an appreciation for our well-educated and culturally savvy president (unlike some of our own US yokels).

The comments on that link to the LA Times are hysterical. Are we really that arrogant as a country that we take offense at our elected leader showing respect to the leader of another nation? We would be outraged if someone came to the US and did not show respect to our leader. Why are we outraged when our leader goes to another nation and shows respect?

I don't get us sometimes. I really don't.

O is a yokel, not culturally savvy. What a jerk! - nm

...in the meantime, when does Obama ever appear proud of his own country? Ha! It's always more about HIM. He disgusts me. He should not be representing the USA at all.

personal problem with someone you do not know. You can dislike his policies, but you do not have enough information to comment on his personal thoughts regarding his country or his ego mechanism. Projection perhaps.

Oh I have a problem with Obama.. you are correct! - Just observe him..I have.

Politically, most depressing time in my 46 years. A president should first "do no harm". He continues to make things worse, yet cant get past his own radical beliefs and EGO to help the country. He is a terrible leader!
you seem overwrought - StanleyAnn

he assumed the office when the country was circling the drain. You contend that he continues to make things worse. I find that statement ignores the facts. Bless his heart for being willing to accept the slings and arrows.
Yeah, country was circling drain... now DOWN the drain. - Obama is making it ALL worse.

Throws money we dont have at every problem.. weak on Natl security.. doesnt even know protocol.. Unemployment continues to rise. I have family members who have always been able to find work, now out of work. If you actually think the country is headed in right direction, would like to know what you are smoking. Tell me one thing that is better.. its worse!

of viewing Obama with awe and almost a feeling of holiness. Yet it is the teabaggers who continue to insist that he perform a miracle and cure all the problems that have been building in this country for decades. He is also saddled with an uncooperative opposing party that would prefer the country to collapse rather than allow Obama to have a victory. Wise up and tie your shoes.

You wise up. Most Americans dont want Govt - taking over and ruining the USA

..which is what it currently is working on doing. "Progressives" -what a joke of a term that is, since they are just the opposite.
you are right - StanleyAnn

progressives dont want the government to take over and ruin the country either! That's why we elected who we elected. Got it. Snap.
What?...... - Conservative

I don't know if you have noticed StanleyAnn, but progressives have been bringing this country down for years and are ruining it. Look at their beliefs and look at their agenda. They are political cowards who hide behind the government.

Interesting moniker by the way, all you need to add is "Dunham." That tells it all.
another interesting contradiction - StanleyAnn

Conservatives claim the vast majority of the nation is conservative and the progressive movement is tiny. Yet, you want to lay the blame on this country's problems at the feet of this teeny, tiny group. Does not compute. I can assure you that the progressives are not responsible for the sad state that the previous 8 years brought about.

I'm not the OP or the one you are responding to, but I did find this. A couple statements:

This is written about his China visit:

Talking about the visit: "the visit made him miss Bush who "couldn't speak with flowery language and even made grammatical mistakes but spoke as plainly as an American farmer."

Obama, by contrast, speaks "with sweet but empty words."

First Lady Flops In JapanMar 21, 2015
Mrs. Obama, who is 5ft 9in tall, also caused embarrassment earlier in the day when she grabbed Akie Abe, wife of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in a hug-and-handshake combination while the Japanese First Lady was trying to bow.In Japan, you bow. You don’t try to shake hands, curtsey, lurch for a hug, and bow simultaneously, especially when you tower over the Emperor of Nihon. Meltdown? Three Reactors In Japan In Danger.Mar 14, 2011
At lunch time, I heard that one of the reactor's rods are fully exposed. The other two are still only partially exposed.  They are still working furiously on trying to keep the rods cool. Is it a loosing battle?  I hope not. After the explosion at the second plant, and now the third one in danger, it's worse than expected.  They have had over 401 aftershocks and they are still continuing to have aftershocks up to 6.1.  I'm afraid for the people.
