Two guys murder a girl in Goa, India

Posted: Aug 21, 2010

So the girl is on vacation with her family. She is 15. Her mother let's her hang back with a 25 year old tour guide while the rest of the family moves on vacationing around. A big mistake. So the girl is found dead on the beach having been raped and murdered and the Indian authorities charge these guys with culpable homicide which means they could go free. So the laws in India don't have much teeth. Say so long to our medical record privacy and identity if this is the way they operate. Here's a quote from the article:

"They are Samson D'Souza, whom a British witness reportedly saw lying on top of Scarlett outside a beach bar where they had been drinking, and Placido Carvalho, a drug dealer suspected of supplying drugs and sexually assaulting the teenager.

The duo were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, assault with intent to outrage a woman's modesty and administering a stupefying drug with intent to harm.

Both have been released on bail. If convicted, the men could walk free within months."

So why on Earth would her mother..... - Kendra

let her "hang back" with a 25-year-old tour guide? Kind of like that girl in Aruba--who would let their 15-year-old go on a trip to Aruba to drink and party? I hate to be this way, but both cases are REALLY bad judgment on the part of the parents!

I believe NH was 18 and on a senior class trip - sm -

so not quite the same. She got a taste of freedom away from M&D and paid the price with her life unfortunately which does happen, sometimes trips, sometimes at college, etc. Lots of seniors go on class trips and don't end up dead and missing. I would probably have reservations of them leaving the country though on a trip. My 11-y/o just did a trip to Florida w/o me, with about 40 other girls and came home in one piece. But this was a proven trip, well organized, and well chaperoned (1:4)-- only the HS girls could be unchaperoned and in groups of no less than 3, otherwise the rest of them were glued to a chaperone----but the mom in India was less than bright obviously and did not want to deal with a whiny 15-y/o who probably begged her to let her stay back and hang with the tour guide. Hopefully they will amend the charges and the perpertrators will end up in prison for a long, long time, a slap in the wrist certainly won't promoke good relations between the U.S. and India.

For some reason I thought NH was younger, but... - Kendra

turns out I was wrong. Still, I would not fund a trip for my child to Aruba to drink and such, which you know she is going to do. Unless she had the funds to do it and the funds to pay for her own place to live when she got home, it would not happen in my family. I think both parents showed bad judgment and are, unfortunately, paying dearly for it. I am not against well chaperoned trips, don't get me wrong, I just don't think that the Aruba trip was, obviously.
both her parents accompanied her on the trip - fyi

a teacher and several other chaparones but no parents. I agree about not allowing my kids to go out of the country on a class trip. However, google information on girls that go missing in Florida, Texas and Mexico on senior trips, spring break trips, etc., and you will be amazed.

Did some searching on this, frrom March 2008 -s -

updated 12:28 p.m. EDT, Wed March 12, 2008 (CNN) -- The mother of a 15-year-old British girl found dead on a beach in Goa has urged the Indian prime minister to investigate claims that police tried to cover up the fact she had been raped and murdered.

Police initially said Scarlett Keeling drowned after drinking too much, and her semi-naked body was found on a beach at the resort of Anjuna in the southwest Indian state on February 18.

Scarlett's mother, Fiona MacKeown, has been outspoken about the police handling of the case, saying she believes police have covered up evidence and bungled the investigation.

MacKeown disputed that, saying witnesses found Scarlett's body on the beach covered in bruises, which suggested murder. MacKeown, from Devon in southwestern England, said she had pictures of her daughter's body from the autopsy that clearly show bruises all over.

Her lawyer, Vikram Varma, said at a police station in Anjuna on Wednesday he would be meeting the chief secretary of Goa to hand him a copy of their concerns on the cover-up issue. He would also send a copy to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the UK's Press Association reported.

Varma said MacKeown wanted to know why Scarlett's killing was reported as a drowning case. Watch an explanation of how the police changed their focus in the case »

Meanwhile Indian police said they were seeking a British man who might have seen Keeling on the night she was killed.

Inspector General Kishan Kumar said Wednesday the man was with a group of people who reported seeing her drunk at a beachfront restaurant-bar. Scarlett was found dead later that night.

Kumar did not name the man, who he believes is still in India. Kumar said the man was not a witness to Scarlett's death.

Police have already interviewed other members of the group the man was with, Kumar said.

No one has been charged in the teenager's death, though Kumar said he expected charges "shortly."

A man who worked as a bartender along the beach is in custody in the case. Kumar has said police have evidence proving Samson D'Souza, 29, raped Scarlett and that police are now trying to link him to her death.

Scarlett had been on an extended vacation with her family in Goa but was living with a male friend and his aunts while the rest of her family traveled to an adjoining Indian state.

Arrest over British teen's death in Goa
MacKeown said police planned to question her about negligence for leaving her daughter in Goa, though she denied she had done anything wrong.

"The people I left her with I trusted, and they behaved responsibly," she told the British news network ITN. "I had no reason to think that they wouldn't be responsible."

The mother said she knew the man and his family "quite well" and they treated Scarlett like a part of the family, though she said Scarlett and the man eventually started a sexual relationship.

MacKeown told ITN she did not believe the police investigation should end with D'Souza.

"He may have been involved (in Scarlett's death), but I don't think he was the only man," she said. "She was seen with more than one man that night. I think it would take more than one man to do that to her."

The case has thrown the spotlight on Goa, popular for its white sandy beaches and laidback, hippy scene. E-mail to a friend

Unbalanced Trade With India?Nov 06, 2010
Is India going to be the 'new China'? It sounds like it with all the CEOs wanting to do business there with low labor costs. I'm thinking outsoursing MT work was just the beginning and we can yell all we want about it but our voices will be ignored.
