How Christian were our Founders?

Posted: Feb 15, 2010

As text books and curriculum are written and planned in Texas, any thinking person should be shuddering about HOW these tasks are undertaken, and the influence that a very intent group of fundamentalists will have in rewriting American History.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/14/ma...exbooks-t.html

"Following the appeals from the public, the members of what is the most influential state board of education in the country, and one of the most politically conservative, submitted their own proposed changes to the new social-studies curriculum guidelines, whose adoption was the subject of all the attention — guidelines that will affect students around the country, from kindergarten to 12th grade, for the next 10 years. Gail Lowe — who publishes a twice-a-week newspaper when she is not grappling with divisive education issues — is the official chairwoman, but the meeting was dominated by another member. Don McLeroy, a small, vigorous man with a shiny pate and bristling mustache, proposed amendment after amendment on social issues to the document that teams of professional educators had drawn up over 12 months, in what would have to be described as a single-handed display of archconservative political strong-arming.
McLeroy moved that Margaret Sanger, the birth-control pioneer, be included because she “and her followers promoted eugenics,” that language be inserted about Ronald Reagan’s “leadership in restoring national confidence” following Jimmy Carter’s presidency and that students be instructed to “describe the causes and key organizations and individuals of the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s, including Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America, the Heritage Foundation, the Moral Majority and the National Rifle Association.” The injection of partisan politics into education went so far that at one point another Republican board member burst out in seemingly embarrassed exasperation, “Guys, you’re rewriting history now!” Nevertheless, most of McLeroy’s proposed amendments passed by a show of hands"

What an embarrassment to any Texan with a triple-digit IQ. Keep religion and partisan politics OUT of school textbooks, yesterday, today and for all times.

Let 'em secede - NJ

With apologies to those in Texas who aren't with the fringe nuts we keep hearing from...I say let Texas secede from the US. They have threatened it since Obama took office. Let them be their own little country and see how they do without oil subsidies and federal moneys.

Happy, happy, happy. Bill White is in dem gov primary. - Best mayor of Houston I ever saw...

With any luck, Kay Bailey will wrestle the pub nomination away from the whack mob and we will have a close humdinger of a governor's race between two great and intelligent candidates, or we will get Perry who White will trounch the village idiot out of office with one hand tied behind his back. With a Hutchison-White ticket, I can even live with a loss for the dems. She's a smart and level-headed, MODERATE pub (hopefully, not a dying breed). But she will have an uphill fight to win over White, who is a financial wizard and all 'round plain ole cool dude, the perfect choice to deed the mansion to the dems for a while. He'd reverse this textbook nonsense in a heartbeat.

This news is enough to get me out of my seat and down to the democratic headquarters to sign up for active campaigning. A light at the end of the tunnel, just when we needed it the most.
what a refreshing post you wrote - thank you - anony

First, I don't know Perry and have heard Kay Bailey speak a couple times, but don't know her professional background. I just have to say how refreshing it was to read your post, particularly when you wrote that it will be a close election between "two great and intelligent candidates". I wish I lived in Texas as I have heard some people speak about how politics is. I like the ideas I've heard that Texas could "succeed" (? - sorry unsure of the correct political term), but become your own state and not fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government (sorry, also not real political savvy to know if I understand that correctly). Unfortunately here in Oregon things are very very bad and I wish for the good of the people we would have politicians more like the ones you have in Texas. What ever side runs in Texas I hope the best person wins, and sounds like you at least have the opportunity to vote for someone decent, and whoever wins will be a good person.

Anyway...just wanted to say I enjoyed your post and loved that you didn't bash either side.

How exactly is history being rewritten? - LoriMT

Ronald Reagan DID restore national confidence after Carter's weak presidency. There was a resurgence of conservativism in the 80s and 90s. And exactly what is wrong with learning about the Heritage Foundation, the Moral Majority and the NRA in conjunction with their liberal counterparts?

What part does one-sided partisanship play in molding - critical thinking skills in students?

[ In Reply To ..]
None whatsoever. Are the republicans so desperate for support that they are willing to start lockstep indoctrination in preschool?

The only appropriate place for this is in a political science course clearly demarcated as conservative politics. Any other place would require meticulous balancing and equal presentation of all sides, and should not be confined to just 2 viewpoints.

The elementary, junior high and high school educator's jobs are to instill critical thinking skills in our kids so that they can make up their own minds. Anything short of that is a gross disservice to them and to the spirit of our nation's claim to democratic process.

Puhleez, history textbooks have notoriously been liberally one-sided for years now. - LoriMT

Ah, but that's okay. It's okay to present the liberal side of things without giving equal time to the conservative side. But heaven forbid Texas go out and try to add a little conservatism to their textbooks!

Try reading 48 Liberal Lies About American History by Larry Schweikart.
Just like the news media, huh? Liberals running amok - spreading all that free speech around...
[ In Reply To ..]
Another baseless claim. Give us a for instance. Show us an example of textbook liberal bias. Do not waste your time trying to pass off Schweikart's table of contents as textook content. You wouldn't want to end up looking as foolish as he does.

What we need here is a hard core passage from a real live textbook that illustrates your point.

The Founders Anticipated "fake News." Here's What TheyJan 04, 2017
The idea that the press could try to deceive rather than enlighten readers was not lost on the Founders. In the years before and after the American Revolution there was an explosion of printing presses throughout the Western world as improved printing technology was becoming widely available. Journalists and pamphleteers were certainly vital to spreading the ideas of American rebellion against the English—names like Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams were nearly synonymous with the American Revo ...

Do We Really Believe Obama Is A Christian After This????Sep 18, 2015
Some of the things he does makes a lot of people wonder if he's really a Christian. Really - I thought everyone argued against separation of church and state; IOW, NO PRAYER in school is allowed, yet this was allowed. Why? Are the Muslims exempt from following that law? Or is only the Christian religious prayer not allowed?  This is another glaring example of the double standard in this country.Prayer vigil held for Mohamed, clock ‘bomb’ boy: What are they praying for? the power of secular fundamentalism appears to be on the rise and in which religious freedom seems to be imperiled, it is easy for Christians to become despondent. The clouds of radical relativism seem to obscure the light of objective truth and it can be difficult to discern any silver lining to help us illumine the future with hope. In such gloomy times the example of the martyrs can be encouraging. Those who laid down their lives for Christ and His Church in worse times than ours are bea ...

Republicans Are Trapped By Christian May 27, 2015
The problem for Republicans is that they seem to believe that God is on their side, so they believe they are above the law. Their religious beliefs are above the law. Is this not the same argument they have been making about Muslims imposing Sharia Law? It is. The Republican candidates need to come out strong against the Duggar actions. They need to disown them, cut them off and be rid of this pariah, both politically and morally. Huckabee has kissed his candidacy "Good Bye." The ...
