As grandmother to 3 little boys, I want all our Secs of Defense to put troops "on the ground" reluctantly, as he would, not Neocon-eagerly. Our young men should not be seen as usable and disposable. Republicans support continuing the vast profits of the war industry, then, and oppose any cuts at all to military spending as a way of balancing our budget and decreasing our deficit?

If getting control of military spending means he can't be a Republican, he has a problem. Because with his social views, I'll have him for Secretary of Defense but not for a fellow Democrat. He can't even be considered even a moderate socially, much less a liberal. I suppose he could start calling himself independent, like so many other conservatives are doing, but he doesn't seem to want to.
