Guns in federal facilities.

Posted: Jul 18, 2015

I really don't get the prohibition on guns in recruiting offices, etc.  Lots of federal facilities have armed officers, as anyone who's ever visited Washington DC knows - or are politicians and bureaucrats the only ones who deserve protection?

Heck, 3 years ago I took my FIL to the local Social Security office to file for his benefits and not only was there an armed officer walking around the office, but the employees worked behind bullet-proof glass with a little slot in it for handing paperwork back and forth.   I mean, really - Social Security!

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that our military personnel would be much more likely targets for terrorists (and perhaps other sorts of loons) than a bunch of little old gray-haired people filing for SS benefits, no?

Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a Warner Brothers cartoon.

No surprise is it? - anonie

I totally agree with you.

Oh, this proves that we love our military and do all we can for our vets. Honestly, this proves there is an elite group of people.

These men and women fight for our country and lose their lives often and yet we can't let them arm themselves so these terrorists can't kill them.

This is beyond disgraceful.

This has nothing to do with Veterans, anonie. - Veteran

This has nothing to do with Veterans, anonie. All VA facilities are protected by armed police, many or most of whom are military police combat vets. All VA staff, approximately 30% of whom are Veterans, are trained in threat response. Some VA facilities require metal detector and x-ray screening, among other modes of protection.

You missed my point - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
You completely missed my point. I was trying to say it is like the VA who claims to want to help vets along with our government and Congress, yet they won't let them have guns to defend themselves.

Pretty soon it will be the police. We seem not to respect either right now. This all has got to change or we will hear daily news about these terrorist whether home grown or not and the war against police in this country. I for one am glad we have both.

Would you who poo poo my comments be willing to fight for our country or perhaps decide to be a policeman. I think not. You just try to talk and it makes no sense. Just political drivel as usual.

Yes. I am a veteran with a concealed weapons permit. They do let me have guns. It's really not about veterans.

Not all military go into service to help - protect and this gets my goat

[ In Reply To ..]
every time I hear it. Just this past week met a guy who was going to sign up for the marines. Was he talking to me about joining to protect? No, he said he wanted to travel and thought that was the best way to do it. Told him you can travel without joining. Ridiculous that all who serve are trying to protect or fight for you or me.

Be more understanding, please. - Veteran

A lot of people, especially younger ones, are shy of saying that they are doing it for any noble purpose. It is even hard to admit it to yourself. It sounds little grandiose, you know? It is a lot easier to use the euphemism of seeing the world or traveling.

It is not always socially acceptable to admit that you are joining the military to protect and defend. When you do say it, people may be taken aback or even repelled.

Try not to be so judgemental.

Can only go by what I hear and that is - what I have heard, that or
[ In Reply To ..]
going into the service in order to get some sort of job training. I have heard both several times. I have heard serving my country but like I stated, not everyone goes in to fight for you or I. As far as being judgemental, heard about no one should kill a person serving their country. What difference does it make serving or sitting in church? I do not get that. A life is a life. Again, I have heard and I could probably state not 100% are wanting to be "noble." Head in sand.

Unless you are a veteran and can say how you - are "supposed to feel"

[ In Reply To ..]
From personal experience, I wonder how it could be okay for us civilians to criticize anyone doing military service?

I myself wonder how I would feel doing military service, even if you had joined up for all the altruistic reasons you state, only to wake up in someplace like Afghanistan or Iraq and wonder what on earth function you are serving there, putting your life on the line every day for what?

Can you explain that? How are those wars fighting to protect us in any way, how could you make it connect to your patriotism and the feeling of doing something good and important for your country?

It seems to me there has not been a war that was necessary since WWII and the military seems to be more of an economic machine for military fat cats and owners of war companies like Halliburton, NOT a true representation of an actual need to defend our country.

So I think whatever reason they join up, good that someone still wants to, and I just pray they don't end up being killed when wishing them well.
The romantic notion takes advantage of a lot - of young and impressionable
[ In Reply To ..]
if they knew what they were getting into, many would not join. Many who joined the Reserves thought they were getting a paycheck to be ready for extreme need and found themselves in the dessert for no reason, then they found themselves in Tikrit for little reason. They grasped for good. I heard, "We are doing so much good building schools." --- that wouldn't have been necessary if we hadn't bombed them to oblivion to begin with (but at least our soldiers could hold onto that).

Psychologically, I'm glad that they are given the proud service, defending freedom routine, but many commit suicide, wonder why?

Politicians and business have pushed for involvement of our troops in a lot of places we never should have been, to bolster a lot of personal agenda.

Of course, as a nation we have to figure out some way to keep a military at the ready (selling that cost to our people and having them interested in serving), so creating bogus wars and bolstering threat is ?necessary?

The military isn't ONLY about fighting. In fact, - its only a fraction of what they do.

Interviews I have heard is that the recruiting offices don't want the weapons as they feel it intimidates and is not a violent environment usually. Maybe they just need to move the offices on base and have people go through security to be inducted.

As to Social Security (made me chuckle) apparently you haven't experienced the extremely irritable/lunatic response of old people.

**Okay, change that from lunatic to demented, perhaps senile, impaired with Alzheimer's and packing. My father was affected with dementia and my mother woke to him with his arms braced, using her sleeping body as an upright, while holding his gun pointing out at the imaginary phantom coming through their bedroom door. Perhaps I used loony/lunatic fondly.

as to being desperately unhappy--- no worse, no better than anyone else, I'd say, however, more guns in more peoples' hands is insane. I read this earlier, "Who has to die for gun control to become important to you?"

Well look, while I was out shopping, the FLA - governor ordered the recruiters to Armory

No, but now in your post we have all experienced the kindness and understanding and respectfulness (NOT!) of someone who I have to assume is a young person. Just remember, you too will be an "older person" one day. For your sake, I hope most people do not hold such a mean attitude toward their elders.

I couldn't of said it better. I think she is a very unhappy person.

Makes no difference if military or church now - More guns are not helping

[ In Reply To ..]
The people killed in Chattanooga, even if armed, were killed because it was an ambush. The gun fired from the rental car, from the car, not out in the open. I guess by your description little old gray-haired people like you describe would never be targets for people bent on killing, huh? The pictures I saw from the Charleston church were not what I call the younger crowd. Killings are happening everywhere now, makes no difference where you live, if you are armed or not. Case in point: A guy in Georgia working at one of the reserve offices yesterday after the shootings decided to arm himself when he went to work. They have yet to find out why, was he scared for his life, trying to protect his fellow workers. Bottom line, the guy shot himself in his leg, taken to the hospital. He armed himself sure enough. Might face charges now because no firearms allowed on the property.

And if gun culture were less acceptable - there would be less guns available

[ In Reply To ..]
This guy was not a criminal. He wasn't a gang member, not a drug dealer, not an armed robber.

This is a real problem that these types of weapons are available to anyone who has not proven mental incompetence in the past---WHICH IS EVERYONE for the most part, just about EVERYONE. With the ability to hop state lines, find creative ways around the weak laws this is hopeless. BAN THE WEAPONS entirely. Then, when anyone has one, you know it is illegal and should be disposed of, arrest, apprehend, whatever.

Not to mention you can go shopping in many states - see msg. - Confused

[ In Reply To ..]
...with people who can legally carry a concealed gun. Yes I'm all for right to arm, however, what really concerns me is - I have two sons who can shop in stores with other customers who have a concealed gun - does that make my kids feel safe or me? No, it really doesn't. While we have the right to arms, we also have the right to shop without worrying about being shot. Off topic a bit, I know, but I just don't know why gun control is such a big issue when it should be a given. Arm those in federal facilities, allow the right to arm in the home, but open carry is just something I don't think is necessary.

In the course of his work my DH has to enter many neighborhoods that are known to be extremely unsafe. He is trained in firearms, and I feel much better knowing he is able to carry and would be able to defend himself if need be. I would hate to have him out there with no means of self-protection. And if in a situation where one nutjob had a gun and was planning harm, I would like to know there was someone there who availed themselves of the right to carry and could thwart that attempt and defend themselves and others.

I walk through extremely unsafe neighborhoods - all the time. Alone. And female. (sm)

And I've never had any trouble. Maybe it's because I don't look upon every individual with darker skin than mine as a threat or a "thug".

Or, more importantly, maybe it's because I don't carry nor point a gun at anybody.

Guns And Intrinsic Danger. Or, "guns Don't Kill, People Kill"Dec 15, 2012
If I were at a party, left the adults and put a nerf ball in the familiy room where the children were playing, nobody'd think anything of it. If I put a loaded gun in there, every adult would rush to get it before the children did. THAT IS BECAUSE GUNS ARE INTRINSICALLY DANGEROUS. The only thing that changed was the presence of a gun, but no one would claim it was actually the children who were dangerous. Suicides by gun are much more likely to result in death than ANY of the other usual ...
